Sideboard

Maybeboard

Grixis Bolas Control for Modern. Super fun to brew up, has fared well in matchups with Jund, Tron, Stoneblade and Burn so far in testing, so it might actually be a decent deck. No clue about sideboard, just threw some random junk in there at the moment that seemed to make sense.

Played about 50 games of the Burn matchup the last 2 days and Bolas fares very well against this deck. It's a matchup that certainly favors Bolas pre sideboard by a bit and post sideboard by a significant margin.

Most of Burns wins come on the play when Bolas has to mulligan away bad openers and Burn is able to win by turn 3. Typically, if the games go longer than 3 turns Burn has extreme difficulty in closing the match out. Eidolon is quite possibly the greatest threat as most of the interacting Bolas wants to do is going to be done with 3 mana or less spells and the additional damage can put serious pressure on Bolas. K Command can really put the brakes on Burn, however, trading for a creature and a spell that would have been spent on blasting Bolas to the face. Searing Blaze feels particularly bad to see for Burn as it rarely is able to be cast effectively.

Bolas wins are typically coming from games where it is able to effectively run Burn out of gas on an empty board state while Bolas still holds a trump card or two to handle any top decked spells that could close out the game. Thoughtseize feels terrible in game 1 but post sideboard and the swap to an all Inquisition package solves the issue. Collective Brutality puts in work out of the sideboard as well as a very effective means of stalling out Burn's aggression and reaching the ideal game state for Bolas to take control. With a Jace on the board in such a situation he typically wants to tick up and Fate Seal if Bolas already has an answer such as Drown in the Loch in hand while Burn is out of cards, but tick 0 and brainstorm to find a trump card if Bolas isn't currently holding one. Drown in the Loch is an absolute all star in this matchup and by far the most useful spell Bolas can see, but K Command when it's able to nab a card from Burn's hand while killing a creature feels very strong indeed.
