Burakos, Party Leader is such a fun commander. I really enjoy the flexibility of having all the party creature types already in the command zone. I have a suggestions if you're interested:

  • If it's in your budget, I'd recommend adding Roaming Throne. It has some incredible flexibility in this deck, and will always work with Burakos.

  • There is an infinite combo option that can fit pretty seamlessly into this deck. It utilizes Leonin Relic-Warder + Animate Dead + an aristocrat like Zulaport Cutthroat/Elas il-Kor, Sadistic Pilgrim. I like this combo because Relic-Warder and the reanimation pieces can all work as separate pieces, and don't really feel like dead draws outside of the combo.

  • Might be more of a meta dependent choice, but Assault Intercessor is one of my favorite Warrior options for the deck. Admittedly, I do encounter aristocrats strats in my meta often enough to play this.

  • Kutzil's Flanker is another newer option with Flash and graveyard hate as some enticing options. Another more meta dependent choice.

  • I'd recommend checking out Emergence Zone and Scout's Warning as means of playing creatures at instant speed. Most of the creatures in Burakos, Party Leader/Folk Hero decks tend to be fairly low to the ground. Helpful to get some additional cantrip-y draw on other players' turns.

I hope these suggestions are helpful. I'm down to chat through any others if you're open to it. Burakos/Folk Hero has a decent suite of creature options to fine-tune to different metas.

Yeah, Grixis Marchesa is a very future-proofed commander. +1/+1 counters & support pops up often enough in sets. I get the sense Isshin will stay fresh for a long while, especially since he can now be built in a handful of different, but overlapping archetypes.

I feel like Burakos, Party Leader is another future-proofed commander, since the Party creature types are sure to get a few printed each set. Definitely allows for tool-boxy & meta adjustable variants.

Crow-Umbra Yeah, I sometimes switch Nalia de'Arnise with Burakos, Party Leader/Folk Hero its just down to how i'm feeling on the day.

To be honest i've never had a problem with the higher cost cards, i've always pulled the cards I need or wanted. I've played it about 20 ish times and its been pretty solid deck and won most of those games. It must be luck then ;)

Hi there! I think you might have a smoother time playing Burakos, Party Leader / Folk Hero as your commander. I also bought and upgraded the Party Time precon, and initially tried it with Nalia de'Arnise as the commander. I've found having Burakos at the helm and leaning more heavily into the Party focus can make for a very fun and resilient build.

You have a lot of strong and higher mana costed cards, so having some Treasure production in your command zone will help you cast some of your bigger spells more consistently if you decide to keep your deck in its current form.

All that being said, I think that although you have many strong cards in your deck, it does lack some cohesion and synergy. Although you have Maskwood Nexus in deck to turn all your creatures into Party members, you may not always draw it or tutor it out, so having your creatures be primarily be Party classes will help with consistency, regardless if Nalia or Burakos is the commander.

Having Burakos and even a couple Party creatures can have you pumping out 1-4 treasure per combat, which is nothing to scoff at. This opens up additional alternate win-cons like Revel in Riches, and creates some fun synergy with things like Agent of the Iron Throne, Disciple of the Vault, and Marionette Master.

I've been considering Burakos, Party Leader in the deck in addition to Harper Recruiter but my only concern is not hitting anything or not getting enough value out of Burakos Crow-Umbra. I've also been considering Professional Face-Breaker since it has a similar effect to Grim Hireling in creating treasure tokens through combat but uses them differently. There's also Squee, Dubious Monarch which creates tokens upon attacking and can get itself back. And another card draw option I've been considering is Search the Premises since it creates clue tokens like Sophina, Spearsage Deserter

All very understandable points Althuran. If you want something that's a bit more obscure, I'd recommend Scapegoat as a board protection spell, especially with the all the tokens you can create.

In terms of Isshin builds, I think that the Party/Dungeon Venturing build is one of the least common that I've seen. Isshin will essentially let you double up each of your venturing triggers. Burakos, Party Leader is a pinger option, and restricting yourself to Party and Dungeon creatures is a fairly unique twist I haven't seen much of.

Thank you for cool the suggestions DawnsRayofLight. I've played Seasoned Dungeoneer a bit in my Burakos, Party Leader/Folk Hero deck before I swapped it out. I totally forgot about Caves of Chaos Adventurer.

My playgroup has a house rule where we introduce Monarch into our games at the end of the third turn rotation. The person going last in turn order becomes Monarch at the end of that turn. I think I may have placed some of the Initiative cards on back burner because I didn't want to have my group track both Monarch and Initiative/Under City at the same time.

Otharri and Neyali are both pretty cool tech. I think the Equipment Voltron Isshin lists are going to get some of the most tech with the newer equipment in the pre-con. I've been play-testing Neyali, Suns' Vanguard a bit in the slot I have Professional Face-Breaker rn. The impulse draw from Neyali is cool for some second-main set up, but feels a little annoying when she impulses some of my instant speed removal & protection.

I'm also testing Mondrak, Glory Dominus in the slot I have Leonin Warleader rn. Norn's Decree is also interesting. Hoping my submission will be live soon.

Ah gotcha. Extus definitely seemed like kind of a strange include at first.

A card I've been enjoying recently is Inquisitorial Rosette. I like that it pulls double duty as a token producer and evasion anthem.

I'd also recommend checking out Hammers of Moradin and Zhentarim Bandit for relatively cheap pick ups. I first played Hammers of Moradin in my Burakos, Party Leader/Folk Hero deck, and was pretty impressed by how it cleared blockers there. I recently slotted a copy into my Isshin deck for clearing lanes.

Commissar Severina Raine is a pretty cool finisher/slightly worse Skullclamp. Her price has been up and down, but I think she is currently under $10. She does some serious work in more token focused Isshin strats.
