Let's talk JOU.
What cards impress you so far? What seems overhyped? Are there any cards you can't wait to get your hands on?
Heroes' Bane is just a bad Kalonian Hydra in my opinion. They cost the same, are both 4 +1/+1 counter hydras, kalo has trample, and bane costs mana to get the counters. True, you can do it more than once, but that requires 8 mana, and a 16/16 without trample is still probably less helpful than an 8/8 trample.

My favorite cards of this set are Iroas, God of Victory , Daring Thief , and the flavor of Hall of Triumph .

I hope it opens up the format a bit.. will it be enough to unseat M B D? The synergies with the B W god might be able to push it out.. those kill spells now come with a heavy price. Can't wait for prerelease. .. especially since they got rid of tribute .. interesting idea, but giving your opponent an option that suits them didn't work out. Constellation is more abusive. And they finally made some other gods 3 cost.

Funny enough, Zuckfat, the W/B God (and other Enchantments) may push more MBD players into Orzhov Mid so they can get their hands on Deicide .

I opted out of Standard when Theros came in, as I wasn't all that impressed. JOU seems to be better than the rest of the block and synergizes quite well. Props on the overall design. The artwork and flavor is also kick ass. The black King Midas is especially cool for flavor. As is the Golden Fleece white 0/5 enchantment creature.
There seems to be some stuff in this set that could be playable outside of Standard, more so than Theros and BNG.
My favorite, being a Timmy, is the Hydra Broodmaster . It'd be great in a Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger EDH deck!
On a side note, I've noticed some cool reptiles and artwork depicted in the past few sets. Pharika's Chosen resembles a Black Mamba. Sigiled Skink is just cool. Wasteland Viper looks like a Bitis species on steroids. Ambush Viper belongs in the Atheris family. There are lots of other cards that I won't name. I'm a bit of a herpetoculturist and dig snakes, lizards, and their kin.

Deicide FTW.
slaughtergods anyone?
I absolutely love this card. Everything about Deicide is enjoyable, the look, the name, the playability. My favorite in the set.

Methinks Athreos seems super over-hyped but not without good reason... of course.Another card that is definitely overhyped is Deicide , here's why: this set already has sooo much God (enchantment) hate that it seems Overkill.
The Cards I like:
Pheres-Band Warchief -Centaurs finally get some tribal
Iroas, God of Victory -Can you say "combat shenanigans"
Pharika, God of Affliction -G/B Constellation?
Spawn of Thraxes - Huge Powerhouse is a Huge powerhouse
Card I don't like:
Dawnbringer Charioteers -Seraph of Dawn with generic Heroic effect doesn't equal a Rare in my opinion.

I'd say that Dawnbringer Charioteers deserves rare status. Seraph of Dawn was not a common level card. The only reason it was a common was because WotC wanted an Angel at that rarity level. I'd say it deserves an uncommon level if we take into account those factors. Adding an ability that speeds up a kill clock on an already decently solid card deserves a rare status. Mostly because limited would be kinda busted in a set that could easily build a deck around this. However, I do understand the concern.
As for my favorite cards? Pretty much any rare or mythic with black on it.They all just make me a little happy to see.

I'm not really all that excited by this set.
I want to get a hold of Keranos, God of Storms and Mana Confluence but not at the prices they are pre-ordering at.
The rest of the stuff revealed for me, i'm simply not interested in pre-ordering because I don't see anything I need desperately or that will definitely spike.

I agree with Schuesseled
I'm not not really impressed my this set at all.
Besides the mythics like Athreos, God of Passage There's really not much of anything I want to run in my Mono-Re Aggro deck or my Black-White Humans deck.
I also really don't care for this set because while Born or the Gods wasn't very powerful I found a lot more cards from that set to be standard playable (Courser of Kruphix Herald of Torment Archetype of Courage ) than there are in Journey into Nyx.
Furthermore barely gives us anything to replace the low-end cards we'll be losing with Ravnica cycling out. Gore-House Chainwalker , Pack Rat , Desecration Demon , All the Hybrid guys. AND ALSO doesn't really do anything to make any interesting decks FNM viable like Born did with Boros Burn (with Satyr Firedancer ) and Mono-Green (with Swordwise Centaur and the payload of Aspect of Hydra )
Overall really unhappy with how this set turned out and hoping that Huey will get me hype with it's focus on mechanically strong cards as opposed to Theros' adherence to flavor.
April 21, 2014 10:46 a.m.
The thing that I'm tending to notice with Journey into Nyx is that, as the two people above said, most of the cards in the set "don't go with stuff". Now what I think we have to do as Magic players is decide if that's a good or a bad thing. Right now, what it seems that many of us do is take the cards we have/know, look at our deck archetypes, and try to see how the new stuff fits in. For example, I'm running a mono-white enchantment Voltron deck. The set comes out, and I see nothing but weenie in white and enchantment hate in everything. I see Dawnbringer Charioteers and I think, well, I don't want to put Gift of Orzhova on that, no thanks. So I'm disappointed. I think that there are a lot of deck archetypes that are experiencing the same thing. So, as I said, is that good or bad? Well, it's both. It's bad that a lot of the decks that people play got nothing, and one of the reasons that some of those decks are played is simply because they're fun. But it's also good, because now we get to see a whole bunch of new things. B/G Enchants and Boros aggro are already being talked about, neither of which were a thing at all before. So personally, I'm excited. I'm excited to draft a few times, then take my good stuff and make a new silly deck to play. And I hope other people feel the same.

I have a simple dream... a truly simple dream. A dream where a poor, unloved Satyr Rambler comes to find love for Pherika in his heart, and curves right into Aspect of Gorgon (enchantment, gains +1/+3 and deathtouch). And then he actually finds a place he can call home...
Truly, a simple pairing made in Magical Christmas Land.

Personally, I'm really looking forward to this set. Before the spoilers began, I didn't think I was going to be buying a box of Journey into Nyx, just because in the last few blocks the third sets have kinda been duds, imo. Now, however there are soooo many cards I see that I want out of this set, and not just rares either.

I disagree with @Dritz on Revoke Existence being replaced by Deicide the cards are very different other than the cmc and deicide is really a slaughter games for gods that is more of a side card. Revoke is more versatile. Deicide is a good card no question but probably a 2 of in a white splashing sideboard.

I like sets that shake up the current meta.....new sets should not be built to have synergies with past sets just for synergies sake......the format should change and evolve with new sets so that the current top deck now will not always be the top deck....people need to realize that standard is an ever changing format, and is meant to be so.....I agree that the current set has limited appeal to people who want to run the same type of deck, but be creative and create a new top deck with the cards that are there.....to the point that standard will be loosing a lot of early drops when rotation hits, there will be a core set and a new set that will try to minimize that loss.....if you want to play the same type of deck over and over again, go with modern or legacy.....wizards are trying to appeal to a larger audience than just standard......some cards are meant to be helpful in limited, others in EDH, or even casual......I think wizards is trying to slow the standard format down a little, which it has done from time to time, and people have complained each time.....

I want to build so many different decks now. Junk Humans (splashing green for Abrupt Decay and Golgari Charm s) American Midrange/Burn using Keranos, God of Storms , Grixis midrange, focusing on Keranos and Mogis, God of Slaughter , Jund Discard using Shrieking Affliction and Deathrite Shaman with the new 3 mana discard spell. So many options and I love them all!
April 23, 2014 6 p.m.
I am psyched! I've made five post-rotation decks already! Launch the Fleet , Master of the Feast and Battlefield Thaumaturge + Hour of Need scare me, though. I just started working on an aggro (or is it tempo? I have no idea) U/G deck, and I have no idea how I would respond to any of those, except for Master of the Feast .
Though I've got to admit, the distinct lack of Harpies and Archons in Nyx saddens me as I really would've wanted both, so that I could ditch the Fates and Leonin sub-themes in one o' me other decks.
The minor Centaur-tribal was a nice touch, though, might even make a Centaur-themed Golgari deck now.
April 23, 2014 6:20 p.m.
I plan to pick up packs on release weekend since I won't have money for prerelease. Really hoping for a Godsend in one of the packs so I can put it in my Eight-and-a-Half-Tails Voltron EDH.

Ohthenoises: I don't believe that is the case. Protection from white would prevent damage from all white sources, prevent white creatures from blocking, prevents it from being enchanted by white cards, and prevents it from being targeted by white cards. If Godsend is equipped, it isn't targeting, dealing damage, or enchanting the creature with pro white. so my understanding is that it wouldn't fall off
April 24, 2014 1:47 p.m.
Ohthenoises says... #29
Protection can be understood by the acryonym D.E.B.T.
Damage
Enchanted/Equipped
Blocked
Targeted

CommanderOfBolas says... #30
Fair enough. I didn't know I included equipment.
April 24, 2014 1:52 p.m.
Creatures with protection can't be equipped either: "702.16d A permanent with protection cant be equipped by Equipment that have the stated quality or fortified by Fortifications that have the stated quality. Such Equipment or Fortifications become unattached from that permanent as a state-based action, but remain on the battlefield."

CommanderOfBolas Most people don't, I make it a habit to remind people like acbooster who want to include it in 8.5 tails for that EXACT reason. It's chill.

DEBT
Dealt damage by; Enchanted/Equpped by; Blocked by; Targeted by.
Auras are unattached when the attached creature can't be enchanted (by that aura) anymore. If have bestow, it becomes a creature, if not, goes to a graveyard.
Equips, when unattached, remain on the battlefield. I just don't know if they're going to unattach if the creature can't be equiped anymore, only know that it can't being equipped.

I think Iroas, God of Victory is pretty bonkers in r/w weenie devotion. With cards like Phalanx Leader and Young Pyromancer you attack till you win.

I really really like Prophetic Flamespeaker . I know, I know, you are thinking dies to Polukranos, World Eater and so many other midrange guys, but if you make him unlbockable... Aqueous Form , Thassa, God of the Sea etc and you get a couple of attacks in, how can you lose with such great card advantage.
April 24, 2014 2:16 p.m.
I agree... Prophetic Flamespeaker is going to provide card advantage for many red decks... Card advantage in Red is as powerful (if not more) than it is for any other color.
As it's not a common thing for red to get card advantage, It's likely going to be used by any/all who understand the advantage... Though it may take a while for it to "catch-on" as it's not something Red usually looks for.
April 24, 2014 2:32 p.m.
Ohthenoises I'm fully aware. I put Darksteel Plate on the same thing as Godsend so that there's little to no chance it'd get removed. No one in my group plays with -X/-X or exile.

The psuedo card advantage provided by Flamespeaker Adept is not game breaking by any means. Chandra, Pyromaster already does it better and more reliably. That possible extra card will be hard to obtain and will rarely be able to be cast.
He might make a splash in older formats but I don't see it in Standard.

Well the thing is though is that we're not a competitive group. Only one person in our group has ever been to an FNM, and he and I are the only ones to have ever gone to a constructed event (Theros Game Day).

"Chandra, Pyromaster already does it better and more reliably. That possible extra card will be hard to obtain and will rarely be able to be cast."
I'm confused how does it do it better? More reliably...Sure, blockers and all. But assume it's not blocked. He draws two cards and deals damage to your opponent, whereas chandra draws one and that it, doesn't even gain loyalty.
And as for rarely being able to cast it, if you haven't played anything and it's not a counterspell or removal without a target (something red doesn't need to worry to much about, what with it being red) then chances are good that you'll be able to play it.
Unless you meant not being able to play the second card you drew, well that's a fair point but you also get to choose the best one to play in such a situation.
April 24, 2014 4:24 p.m.
Actually, I think that Chandra, Pyromaster and Prophetic Flamespeaker will work nicely together.
Chandra will get you 1 card per turn, until you get your Flamespeaker out...
Then Chandra will make their creatures unable to block, while Flamespeaker deals more damage and gets you 2 cards per turn... nice little self supporting/increasing strategy.
Others probably won't see it this way, because of the 4CMC card leading into a 3CMC card... but you want spare mana at this point... you need it for the free cards you're getting. - This is a T5+ strategy.
April 24, 2014 4:31 p.m.
Rasta_Viking29 says... #49
Chandra doesn't have to enter the redzone to exile a card and is tougher to remove. That's were my reliable claim comes from. Better takes all of that into account as well as the fact that you can use Chandra without exiling a card, activate the ability at the beginning of your 1st main, and it requires no further investment.
Lets say you cast a Magma Jet and see a Stormbreath Dragon with your scry which would be very helpful. You only have 4 lands. If you attack with Prophetic Flamespeaker you'll exile it and not be able to cast it if left on top. Chandra, Pyromaster can just +1 instead and still be doing something productive.
Chandra, Pyromaster being able to exile on the first main can affect the combat phase. It has synergy with Haste creatures and can find a land to cast a removal spell or a creature from your hand.
Prophetic Flamespeaker will need an aura or pump spell to attack in most cases. This will limit the amount of mana available to cast cards that are exiled. Chandra requires a one time 4 mana investment.
Just my 2 cents. As a red mage I find him very underwhelming. They were too conservative with his body.
April 24, 2014 5:15 p.m.
All I have to say is Titan's Strength . 1 red mana to make him a 4/4 double strike trampler. Plus you can scry to help ensure you get at least one helpful card from the exile. And it's not going to take up all that much of your resources either. And even if you can't cast it? You hit them with a 4/4 double strike trample. That's pretty strong.
