Rule 0 - Urza and Mishra partners?

My previous idea of running Subira, Tulzidi Caravanner and Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir has been sabotaged by the release of The Brother's War. In it's a place, a partner deck of Mishra, Excavation Prodigy and Urza, Powerstone Prodigy has the gears in my brain turning!

I'd like to keep it at about pre-con levels of power and would love suggestions.

So far, cards like Irencrag Pyromancer and others that care about second card draws per turn are key, as are artifacts that have some sort of graveyard recursion like Artificer's Dragon or Metalwork Colossus.

I've also never built a deck to fit in with pre-con levels of power. Any recommendations on how to gauge this? Is it a synergy thing or is it a card rarity ratio thing?

Lots of mana value, but cards to interact with artifacts in the graveyard are few and far between in Izzet. Mostly in red is where you'll find them. If I recall there's like 8 cards that recover artifacts in red, excluding Feldon who makes copies of things but doesn't actually return them.

Lots of mana for combos, no doubt. Could be a nice Storm deck if you're fixing your hand nicely.

I'd say it's fine ^-^

Honestly, it'll be less powerful than the Saheeli Precon, so that's a good thing to gauge it by.

Yeah, I only found a handful of recursion effects. Reconstruction takes the spot of "random old reprint with new art" for the deck. Lol

God-Pharaoh's Gift and Dollhouse of Horrors both seem like they'd work well.

Think Storm the Vault  Flip would be too powerful because it flips into a land?

My favourite option for recursion is Goblin Welder, mostly for the flavour text :) I'm not sure if it's pre-con level though.

Some other decent options are Junk Diver, Scarecrone, Argivian Restoration, Academy Ruins, and Rootwater Diver.

Nah, Storm the Vault  Flip is fine. If you're building a deck, you don't want to purposefully nerf it. All you're doing is emulating the "Partner's With" mechanic.

Build the deck the best you can, homie :)

Neat idea!

Are you asking for just self-recurring artifacts or artifact recursion in general because and are very good at the latter. For the former, your options are a little limited without . I'd look at artifacts with "unearth", or artifacts like Spine of Ish Sah, Scrap Trawler or Myr Retriever. If you want more general artifact recursion then I'd recommend Daretti, Scrap Savant, Goblin Engineer, Scrap Mastery, Trading Post, and Trash for Treasure. Most of these can be safely played at the precon power level. Some recursion effects that are on the stronger end are Goblin Welder, Portal to Phyrexia, Emry, Lurker of the Loch, and Academy Ruins. These are stronger in my opinion because of their efficiency, repeatability, and they possess fewer constraints.

As far as "how to build a precon level deck" goes, I wouldn't worry about purposely nerfing the deck per say, but maybe asking yourself "could a precon handle the synergies, resiliency, and value engines that my deck creates?". Ultimately though, I think the best advice I can give is to build the deck that you want to build, and that you think is precon level. Then play it against some precons. That will give you the best feel for where you deck is at and if you need to add or remove things.

To be honest, I'm not exactly sure of the end goal of this deck. All I know so far is:

  • Urza/Mishra as partner commanders

  • Artifacts are the main theme.

  • Discard and second card draw per turn (cycling synergy, basically) and artifact recursion are the secondary themes

So it's kind of a mix between the C18 Saheeli deck, the C20 cycling deck and the C21 Lorehold deck.

I have a large list of synergistic cards I found while doing research, but it'd be easier to post them from my laptop (currently on phone) tomorrow.
