2022/2023 Update! 1210 Upvotes —May 4, 2023

Sorry for the Delay Everyone! I have been stationed in South Korea for the last 9 months and things have been pretty busy. I am here without the family, so I have played quite a bit of Magic, almost every Friday. I have been taking decks apart that have not seen much play (RIP Ur-Dragon), but OM_RATH remains my favorite. I have gone down from 25 decks to now 15. The downside is that this deck in particular is at a weird spot power-level wise in my META. I play with mostly military members that have only been playing for 1-4 years, while I have been invested in EDH for 14 years now. Because of that, I normally play my "janky" decks, which are normally fun themes that are built semi-optimally. Even than, I am considered to have the "best decks" out of anyone there. What that essentially means is that OM_RATH only sees play maybe once a month, when everyone at the table agrees to play their "pet decks". He wins almost every time that happens.

This update is to show a snap-shot of what my current list looks like. 9 changes in a year in a half is quite a bit, and I am thinking about making two more (more on that later). I'll be honest a ton of these changes are because a new shiny version of a card was printed, and I wanted to add it back in my list (looking at you Burgeoning). I also made over a dozen cosmetic changes to the list, but I won't include that in this update. Fill free to check out the list for what shiny new art I am using (SO happy to finally have a foil Nature's Lorefoil!).

Here are the changes!

IN:

OUT:

I am curious what your thoughts are with these changes! Let me know! The who cards that I want to add are Vandalblast and Tribute to the World Tree, but I am not sure what to cut. Let me know if you have any ideas!

Nice update, on the Perilous Forays comment, I think it's actually fine being left out of the deck. I removed it from my Omnath version a while ago because while it is powerful with Omnath, it often led to inefficient play patterns where I was trying to set up a big Forays turn instead of just accelerating past my opponents. Also, 14 mana for a combo is a lot when you think about it (Omnath (7), Forays (5) + activation (1), Amulet (1)). With that in mind, you could also cut Amulet of Vigor since it loses a lot of its potency without Forays.

In regards to the MDFC additions, Shatterskull Smashing  Flip would be a solid one to consider. It's most certainly not "the worst of the cycle". I have had great success with it. It's a land that comes into play untapped that also kills the two largest creatures at the table in a pinch. Plus it further ups your land count. All gravy here.

Have you looked into Goblin Anarchomancer at all? I've been very pleased with how ridiculously it accelerates Gruul decks.

I like the update. I've been using FotD for a while now, and it's straight bonkers. It makes gaea's cradle even better (as if it wasn't good already), and offers an alternate win condition if Omnath gets dealt with. I've been jamming some games recently, and I feel like there are a few too many payoff cards and not enough ramp compared to what there used to be. I'm not sure what to cut, but valakut exploration hasn't impressed me the few times I've played it. It only seems good with a critical mass of extra land drop effects. Just my .02 though. Keep up the good work, and I hope you're able to jam some games soon!

Hi_diddly_ho_neighbor: I think you might be right about Perilous Forays. It seems so good on the surface, but it hadn't really "gone off" for me. I have kind of been keeping it in the deck out of printable. Just feels weird cutting an OG card from the deck. Amulet of Vigor might be worth cutting too now that I think about it. It helps sometimes, but idk if it has really made me all that much money. I'll give it a few plays tomorrow (finally have time to play).

I'll consider Shatterskull Smashing  Flip.. its low end is really bad, which is why I'm holding back. Goblin Anarchomancer is interesting... I have a copy I can try out if Amulet doesn't work out.

GeminiSpartanX: I've yet to play FotD, but as soon as I field it I will let you know! It seems pretty nuts. What ramp would you recommend? Valakut Exploration is definitely a soft include at the moment, so Ill all ears!

For me recently it's more about quantity of ramp spells over quality. I feel most of the recent additions have been payoff cards which are good only once Omnath is out like garruk's uprising, fiery emancipation, and terror of the peaks, while the only recent good ramp card has been tireless provisioner. Many of my opening hands nowadays look like this: 2-3 lands, 1-2 ramp spells, 2-3 payoff cards. I often stall at 6-7 lands, and if I can't have landfall the same turn I cast Omnath I won't cast him since my meta plays plenty of answers. It's just an observation I've noticed. You can form your own opinion of course, but I think I'll be looking at some ramp spells from the past and adjusting the numbers in the deck accordingly. Dire-strain rampage might help fix the problem I'm having too, but I can't vouch for it until I get my hands on a copy.

I think you might have a point. Ramp is valuable in this deck, but I'm trying to lower the curve on this ramp as much as I can. The challenge is keeping up with all the new 2cmc rocks that are coming out and still maintaining the land ramp integrity. The reason this deck is so good is because we can get away with a higher ramp count because they turn into value generates later in the game. I have over 15 decks and this is the only one that I can reliable cast my commander for for 15 mana lol.

I'm looking forward to getting a couple Omrath games in today, I'll let you know how it goes!

I read your description and your update. I wish I could +1 this again, but then the 69 wouldn't be there anymore. I also love the low avg cmc despite several high CMC cards in the deck.

Regarding your update, you asked for a potential cut for Perilous Forays to come back in the deck. Fiery Emancipation seems like the easiest cut for me. It costs 6 mana, doesn't do anything the turn it comes down and is very much winmore - Helps when you're ahead, does nothing if you are behind. Reading the above comments, it seems you don't want perilous back in the deck. While not an entirely serious suggestion given you already have sylvan awakening, Rude Awakening is definitely worth looking into if your deck description is accurate where you can cast your commander over and over again. At worst, its a ritual. At best, it allows Cradle to tap for massive mana and is another enabler for Shamanic Revelation. It can also just beatdown for the win late game.

Another potential cut is Mina and Den. How often do you need trample? Do you really need the redundancy given Garruk's Uprising? If you were to cut it for an equal CMC card like Kamahl’s Will, I feel you would be better served. Acting as an additional outlet for cradle, shamanic revelation all while providing removal. Best part is that the lands are indestructible (just like sylvan awakening but with so much more benefit for 1 more mana, instant speed too!). You could cut Sylvan awakening if you really feel Mina and Den is necessary to push damage through.

To further field of the dead and ramp out your commander even faster (after 1 commander death tax), or just other creatures, have you considered Castle Garenbrig? Or does the potential of being tapped turn you off to it? If it does, another card to consider is Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth. It makes ancient tomb (so you don't take damage) tap for 1 green, cradle for 1 green if you don't have creatures (after a wipe) and allows your fetches to tap for mana perhaps you don't wanna shuffle (due to your topdeck knowledge like Oracle of Muldaya)

Pushing the envelope a little, Deserted Temple is good synergy with cradle, untap opposing land for politics, or untap yavimaya protection land for additional protection from removal

I would cut Valakuts awakening for Augur of Autumn - Valakut doesn't draw you cards and augur allows you to play lands off the top, potentially creatures too.

Be sure to let me know what you think of each suggestion

Profet93: Thank you for the support! The great part about Om_rath is that there are many ways you can build him. You seem to favor a "makes your lands into elementals" strategy, which is great. It is not my cup of tea though. You mention that I run Sylvan Awakening but I don't think I ever have in this list. I do in my Omnath, Locus of the Roil deck, but not this one. This being said, this also counts out Rude Awakening and Kamahl’s Will in my book.

Castle Garenbrig is another card that is better for a higher creature count deck. Maybe a tribal version of this deck. When it comes to Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth, the Tomb scenario is good, but I never hurt for green mana in this deck, so that isn't enough reason to include it. My land slots are really tight. We need to keep a good number of basics due to all the land ramp we run.

Valakut Awakening  Flip is so good because it is a decent card with a HUGE upside of being a land when I want it to. Augur of Autumn will rarely trigger Coven because of all my 5/5s and low creature count, and just getting a land off the top isn't worth a slot to me. Not a bad card by any means though.

Sorry, it kind of feels like I shut you down.... I don't think any of the cards you suggested are bad, they just don't fit my playstyle. I really do appreciate all the suggestions and feedback!

I guess thats what I get for commenting late at night, I could have sworn it was in this list but I'm mistaken. The cards I mentioned don't make them elementals, just creatures. I love that strategy and figured it could be useful but I respect your decisions regarding your thought process. Thank you for taking the time to explain it to me. Looking forward to how this deck comes together.

Still curious what you think of cutting fiery emancipation and mina and den

I think what makes Fiery Emancipation so good is that it can turn a situation where you only have a limited amount of damage on the board into something game-ending.

In my game this week there were two players left, one with no blockers and 35 life and one with a grip of blockers and 30ish life.

I had 18 life, a Goblin Bombardment, 2 tokens, and Om_rath. I only had a couple of lands in my hand and then topdecked Fiery Emancipation. Without the enchantment, I had 15 combat damage and 16 Bombardment damage (to include the new token and Om_rath himself). After Emancipation I had 45 combat damage and 48 non-combat damage. It went from neither players dead to me winning the game off a top deck.

I can see why the card might seem "win-more", but to me, it is an insurance policy. I also would have to disagree that it is a do-nothing enchantment the turn it comes out. With a VERY small board, it wins games. It looks like a repeatable Craterhoof Behemoth to me. The main drawback is that it isn't a creature I can tutor out and cannot attack itself. Now, I've only cast the spell twice so far, but I won both games I did so.

Mina and Denn, Wildborn is a bit complicated. The trample means almost nothing, as you said. The reason it got a spot back in the deck is (1) the fact that it bounces land back to my hand when I want some landfall, (2) allows me to play an extra land, and also had the sprinkles on top of (3) giving me some instant speed trample to give my opponents a headache when assigning blockers. Even with all these upsides, it is still possible that it comes out of the deck again at some point. I kinda want to play around with Moraug, Fury of Akoum and see how he does..

Hopefully this helps you understand why these cards are in my deck at the moment. Let me know what you think!

I have been trying to pair Moraug but the lack of haste was a problem. Very slow for me if I have a ton of creatures entering but cannot attack.

Was thinking of Akroma's Memorial but I have no space to cut cards..

So many good cards...

Take out "Where ancients tread" for Forays. Tread can only trigger for pwr>5. It's one more card that, while adds to pressure, does nothing without King Jelly Belly, and a land drop.

Any room for Roiling Regrowth? A third copy of Harrow seems really good.

May 23, 2022 9:25 p.m.

Also, why not Vandalblast in for the Nature's Claim? just seems better to have the overload effect in case it's needed. Seems with the sorcery speed

It’s the option to destroy enchantments that makes it better.

I know you'll get to it eventually, but The Brother's War spoilers are here and 'Awaken the Woods' looks incredible for Omnath.

Hey everyone! Need to make an update soon! Awaken the Woods is going in for sure!

lBahamutZeRO says... #18

I just slotted it in and took out a single basic forest. I couldn't take anything else out without feeling like removing part of it's soul. I don't think running 41 lands will affect it too much, but I'll probably find a better cut later on.

Awaken the Woods tho...damn, what a card. Having a scaleable ramp effect that does not pull from the library is such an amazingly designed, and powerful effect. I can't wait to fire this off in games.

Anyway, VexenX, I want to say that this deck has been such a huge favorite of mine for the last 4 or so years. I run the Force of Vigor instead of Nature's Claim for my own preference and to suit my meta, but the core deck is basically identical to yours. I've been putting nothing but love and appreciation for this mean jelly bean. I'm working on fully blinging the hell out of it, and nearly 85% done. Nothing but the best treatment for this absolute gem.

Gruul Omnath is best Omnath.

Anyway, I look forward to your thoughts in your next update. Cheers

VexenX The cuts I would make for Awaken the Woods would have to be a basic land or Nissa's Pilgrimage, at the floor the cards basically do the same thing you get a forest into play but the ceiling for awaken is much higher and one could argue game ending, Nissa's Pilgrimage can only fetch forests that's why I argue Nissa's over other like cards such as Cultivate which can color fix, also Awaken the Woods gets around anti search cards like Opposition Agent and Ashiok, Dream Render. As for Rootpath Purifier I don't think you run enough basic land search to make it worth picking up, and therefore I don't think it's pay off will be huge or note worthy.

I’m still loving the deck. Haven’t updated my list here in a while, but thought I’d share a turn 4 win with the deck, although it was win without Omnath.

Hello VexenX, I modified this deck with a handful of cards like gravity sphere, guantlet of might, berserk, cauldron of souls, and a few others. I will say it was the most feared and has become the most targeted deck I own. Thank you for the basics to get this rolling what a fantastic deck it’s bee
