Swap from Karador to Nethroi —April 5, 2020

After the spoil of Nethroi, Apex of Death i knew that Karador, Ghost Chieftain was time to finally rest.
Don't get me wrong Karador is still one of the best commanders for straight value and attrition games. Its just that 1st i am eager to try the new commanders given to us and 2nd that my Playgroup is no longer a slow attrition based meta.
So Pros and Cons:
Pros:
1.Nethroi, Apex of Death can be explosive and he can bring the entire combo from the graveyard with only 7 mana.
2.He can bring a whole board back after a boardwipe.
3. 5/5 body with lifelink, deathtouch can be fairly relevant when everything else has failed.
Cons:
1.Nethroi, Apex of Death can become really expensive really fast
2.He needs a creature to survive to mutate upon, therefore more slots are needed for protection spells.
3. He is a one-time effect in contrast to Karador that was a reliable reanimation engine every single turn.

Con of Both Commanders:
Sorcery speed Reanimation ( Tayam, Luminous Enigma seems to be able to reanimate on instant speed. Will investigate next).
and of course easy to shutdown with graveyard hate.

Hey! Thought I would check out your deck since you looked at mine. One thing I noticed that seems like a big issue with your deck is that it has 0 instant speed interaction. Even of you only add in 4 pieces of instant interaction, any player you play with regularly will start to assume you might be holding something to stop them from winning. My suggestions would be Swords to Plowshares , Path to Exile , Nature's Claim , and Natural State . With these you can get rid of most permanent types and either stop your opponent from going off or use only 1 extra mana to get rid of something that is stopping you from going off. I would also suggest a few more creature based artifact/enchant removal because you can recur them and gy hate shuts down a hulkweaver plan real quick if they have no removal. I like Qasali Pridemage and Caustic Caterpillar for cheap things on board and Manglehorn as a hybrid removal/artifact hate piece.

hi GhostChieftain,
My meta is a 75% so Mindslicer can be devastating.
I just cut Bane of Progress from my deck .I have used it to slow down enemy decks by cutting mana rocks, but 6 mana as you said felt too much some times. It was a dead card sitting in my hand.
I know i need instant speed interaction but i want to be able to roll out Karador as early as possible to start gaining value. i will think of your suggestions though, i might go for Vivien, Champion of the Wilds / Yeva, Nature's Herald so i can covert all my creatures to instant speed answers.
Thanks for checking out my deck!

My meta is pretty wild as it is a commander league that runs the full spectrum of edh play and pairs players based on their current elo. We have about 8 people that run either netdecks of cedh decks that are tweaked for what they are seeing a lot of at our tables or build decks of their own based on tried and true combos with a lot of interaction, then there are 10-12 players that are strictly homebrew 75%-90% that are trying to keep up, then there is basically the wild west for the other 10-15 that show up with any regularity. If you ever need any competitive karador help, I am always ready to give a hand.

With the vivien/yeva route you are thinking about, I would still say add the creature based removal I suggested. They come down quick and get sacrificed to destroy things, making karador come out faster.

GhostChieftain
oh wow your meta seems a handful. My meta is about 8-10 friends in rotation of who can show up and a few new incomers every month or so. I will definately keep an eye on your primer and contact you again when i lose hope on my Chieftain's ability to combo off everyone on the table.

I will def try to add some instant speed interaction adjusted to my meta. I used to run a heavy boardwipe packet from the battlecruiser todays we were swinging at each other but i am slowly removal some boardwipes for targeted removal.

Thanks again :D

You seem to have a good idea of what to add for powerful decks. This is has been my favorite deck for a long time and I have been playing it since before I knew what cEDH was. I like the include of Wake the Dead I never thought of that and I am going to try to find a spot in my list for it. I have a few players that run combat based commanders so winning in response to them attacking could be a great advantage. Especially if they try to go all in with Craterhoof or Najela.

While Sun Titan is very good but recently I feel like it is to slow. I would replace it with Leonin Relic-Warder You already have the Animate Dead and Dance of the Dead that are made combo pieces with it. Is there a reason you aren't running Blood Artist / Zulaport Cutthroat. They are consistent wincons with Hulk and it seems like you don't have any direct win cards off of Hulk except for Acidic Slime -> Destroy all Artifacts Enchantments and Lands you don't control, then Mindslicer away everyones hands so they can't retaliate. That wins you the game next turn but that just makes the game unnecessarily slow. I think adding at least Blood Artist gives you a direct win that turn and if you draw it early then it helps stop your opponents from graveyard combos because it triggers off all creatures dying, not just your own.

If you could look at my deck and give advice that would be appreciated as well. I used to run all the same types of combos as you are but I slowly narrowed down all the win more cards from the deck to make it more consistent and more powerful. I am trying to get it recognized by the community at the moment. With a heavy heart I had to swap my commander too. I wanted to keep it Karador but I had to switch to Anafenza as a quick creature to pressure Ad Naus decks and a Graveyard Hate piece for opposing Hulk players. Hermit Hulk cEDH

You see? I did get around to looking at your deck!

Pretty sweet build. Now that I see your fill package, I feel like I need to see about putting Life from the Loam into my own deck.

Also, Beast Whisperer!!!! Why didn't you recommend that to me? Why didn't I think of that my own damn self?! I'm running more creatures than you, and I never thought of him. He, and Runic Armasaur, will find a way into my deck.

I second the above suggestion of running Blood Artist or, as I do in my deck, Cruel Celebrant. Or, better yet (albeit, for more mana), Syr Konrad, the Grim. Image pulling off the Karmic Guide + Reveillark combo with Grumpy Grim on the field. But it would work with just his little sister.

All in all, you've given me a wealth of ideas. Cheers!

SwiftDeath thanks for checking out my karador deck. This is my main deck for about 2 years now.And yeah Apprentice Necromancer and Wake the Dead where mind-blowing the first time i discovered them and tried them. they are realllyyyyy good with Entomb.
Sun Titan is on my swap radar but not for the immediate list.I use him as way to bring precious artifacts/enchantments back or as a bad way to ramp.
Blood Artist / Zulaport Cutthroat awlways felt non needed for me. Once i have a loop in place i can:
A.Acidic Slime to remove all lands
B.Knight of Autumn gain infinite life
C.Saffi Eriksdotter + Protean Hulk put all my creatures from my library into play.
D.Sun Titan /Renegade Rallier bring back a milled Altar of Dementia and mill everyone out.
and it doesn't matter what my opponents do.I have a loop if they play a land i will destroy it again,so my playgtoup knows. Once i declare i have an infinite loop we call it "GG" and go for the next game. So lifegain effects seems like wasted slots for me. I will look to your deck also. Keep in mind i play in near-competitive meta (no Mana Vault or other extremely expensive stuff) so besides having a really bad hand my deck does fairly well :)

Epicurus thanks for checking my deck man :D.
i really like Karador and i am trying always to improve him.
Beast Whisperer,Skullclamp,Audacious Thief,Oakhame Adversary,Mindblade Render,Yawgmoth, Thran Physician are all amazing draw engines. Sometimes i forget i have them and neglected to tell you to add them.
on that idea also add Guardian Project and Path of Discovery they are really amazing enchantments i had to cut them out because they costed 2 much. But i still like them.
Runic Armasaur believe it or not is the first to be swapped out when i find a replacement because he is too cirumstancial.
Finally i do love Syr Konrad, the Grim but my meta is too fast for that.I tried him and really like him but 5 mana is too much for the slot i wanted him for (protect my graveyard). I don't need his damage to end the game so i had to remove him.
Thanks for checkning my deck :D
