Removing the Legendaries —March 9, 2021

I'm trying new things and removing the old! Here's the general update.

OUT

Drakuseth, Maw of Flames, Torbran, Thane of Red Fell, and Etali, Primal Storm underperformed in the deck. Being legendary restricted their usefulness.

It That Betrays underperformed, too.

Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker and Blood Moon got taken out for my modern goblins deck.

ox of agonus and Rummaging Goblin aren't very good discard effects, so they're out.

Wurmcoil Engine I just don't like it. It gets a fair amount of life, and makes tokens, but it doesn't really close a game very well. Not like other reanimation targets.

Ghired's Belligerence It wasn't what I thought it would be. It takes too much setup to work consistently.

Worn Powerstone This was a hard choice. However, it takes up the 3 CMC slot that Feldon has.

Solemn Simulacrum It's just slow.

Trading Post Slow

IN

Keldon Firebombers They've been in and out of this deck. Not because they aren't good. They're simply hated.

Merchant of the Vale Nice discard

Ryusei, the Falling Star How have I not thought to put in a boardwipe that can be reanimated before? I can even make multiple of it for more damage.

Terror of the Peaks I love this kind of card. It's the kind of card people hate, but if I tell them I'll reanimate it in multiples if they kill it, they let it stay.

Sneak Attack and Sandstone Oracle They work well together and on their own. The deck needed some more pure draw.

Tibalt's Trickery It's good. That's why.

Darksteel Plate I'm running this because I want to. Not much real strategic significance here.

Mind Stone To replace Worn Powerstone.

Rings of Brighthearth and Lithoform Engine For more Feldon shenanigans.

Jeska's Will Great card. Probably better than Sad Robot, the card it replaced. Wheel of Misfortune is another great new card at 3 CMC I’m adding.

You may have noticed that I removed quite a number of creatures in favor of non-creatures. Does this upset the balance of the deck? Not really. I removed legendary creatures, which can't be reanimated in multiple, in favor of more cards that advance my gameplan of abuse Feldon's ability. I have enough draw to get at least 1 nasty card in the graveyard, and 1 nasty card is all I need. So now I have more support for Feldon instead of options for killing people.

Any reason not to have a mana crpty

Other than the fact that it costs as much as a quarter of his deck? lol

Elfblooder, if I had it, I’d add it. The same is true for Rings of Brighthearth and Wheel of Fortune which I wish I had, too.

Keldon Firebombers and Feldon are a beautiful thing. Puts the board on lockdown.

Hey, this is a bit out of date perhaps, but it's my Feldon deck. Please lmk what you think. Goblins... Why do they always come out Goblins?

Elfblooder, I did my best to make a no-budget Feldon deck. Here it is: Feldon: No Budget Couldn't Buy Happiness. The main changes to the deck were adding in better mana rocks and mana doublers as well as a couple of support cards and snow mountains. The creatures from this deck are already as good as they can get.

I'll take a look at your deck Ender666666 to see what suggestions I have.

A few thoughts! I'm a Feldon lover myself.

In my experience, Sneak Attack is absurd, surprise surprise. Your deck is full of powerful creatures that you wouldn't mind sending to your graveyard. I'm also fond of new purph for similar reasons, though obviously he's not nearly as broken.

Gamble is a super powerful tutor effect, and again, you don't mind when things go to the graveyard. It gives you better access to your kiki conscripts combo, as drawing 1 is common but both is harder.

Ruination is absurd in mono-red, enough said. If it's too mean for your tastes, that's fair.

Small critiques:

I think Mind Stone is better than Worn Powerstone. It's playable on t2 and doesn't compete with your 3 drop feldon, it carries less opportunity cost by making mana right away, and it cycles when you don't need ramp.

I think Tormenting Voice is better than Goblin Lore. You don't need a volume of cards in your graveyard, you need 1 or 2 specific targets in there. I would also give a shout out to 1 mana options that let you play feldon on 3, then loot and activate on 4, like Insolent Neonate or Merchant of the Vale, though admittedly these 2 options carry card disadvantage(although I think they're better than Rummaging Goblin). But I think TV is a pretty strict upgrade to GL because it will never mess you up by discarding noncreatures that you needed.

I don't think I see any graveyard hate in your list, and given the low opportunity cost of it, I think that's probably a miss. Obviously the premium option Relic of Progenitus hurts you somewhat, but cards like Soul-Guide Lantern or even Scrabbling Claws are sometimes very powerful, and when they aren't, they cantrip away at almost no cost to you. Anytime you can hurt an opponent while remaining card neutral for 1 or 2, I think it's a huge deal.

Thanks for the advice wisegreenbean. Each of those cards has been on my watch list to trade for and use in the deck. I wish I got gamble right after the reprint. I do like your reasoning for the mana rocks and discard. I’ve noticed it as well. I’ll bring in Insolent Neonate since it works well with being reanimated. I’ll have to think about what I want to remove for graveyard hate.

What's your thought on new Purphoros vs old, and running sneak attack?

July 30, 2020 1:54 p.m.

Lanzo493 says... #11

Personally, I would love to add Sneak Attack because it’s effectively a discard outlet with an upside. But the new Purphoros costs 5 to play and 3 to activate, which is a lot more. He is indestructible, but enchantments are hard to touch anyway. He’s too much mana for me. As for the old Purphoros, he does get a lot of extra damage in, but he doesn’t fit this deck perfectly. This deck goes tall, and not wide, so we don’t get as much out of him as we could. He’s still good, but he can be taken out of the deck if needed. He’s better than Torbran, though.

Awesome! I've been loving goldfishing this deck and I might try sneak attack in for fires of invention or Torbran and see how that plays.

Deflecting Swat - Counter counterspells, redirect (some extra turns), targetted removal, targetted draw, etc.... Very powerful. That's a nice swords to plowshares you have there, would be a shame if you exiled your own commander :D

TypicalTimmy I can’t remember why I took it out in the first place. Maybe I disliked giving opponent’s cards, or it could be the fact that I only need specific cards in the graveyard and not a critical mass of them. It’ll go back in after I find a copy.

Profet93 I want Deflecting Swat so bad, but nobody’s trading it right now. I’ll get it for this deck eventually.

Hey, im building a feldon deck similar to this. I have wayyyy too much discard though (like 18). What do you think is a good number? 10-12 seems decent?

August 18, 2020 4:52 p.m.

Mercfh85 says... #16

Also out of curiosity...I notice your "changes" in the description, but it doesn't look like the actual decklist is updated based off your changes?

August 18, 2020 5:01 p.m.

Lanzo493 says... #17

Mercfh85 I'm curious what changes you're referring to. My decklist is mostly up to date, and I don't use all of the creatures mentioned in the "Strength and Weaknesses" as well as "Reanimate --> Damage Creatures" section. They're just put there for general reference so people looking through the deck know of other options available. Although I do want to update anything that may seem confusing so I don't give off the wrong idea about the deck.

As for discard, I've found the amount of discard I'm running, around 13 cards, is barely enough. If 18 seems like too much, then I'd say the good range for discard effects is 12-16. Card advantage is good, though, so running a higher number of effects like that is fine.

Any thoughts on Sarkhan, Fireblood in the deck? I'm testing him out in the version I'm building based on your build!

AnthonyB0712 says... #19

I'm also considering Kozilek, the Great Distortion as a counterspell in the GY and a discard outlet.

I know it takes some setup but it seems like a decent repeatable option.

Mercfh85 says... #20

Lanzo493 im stupid, I realized I was looking at the wrong changes. ignore that. Also 12-16 sounds about right. If you get a moment would you mind looking at my deck and offering some suggestions:

My deck:

I still need to make a few cuts, and am wondering if I am going in the general direction correctly (also I know Blightsteel Colossus isn't going to work with Feldon, it's purely a pet card for sneak attack sneaky kills :) )

August 19, 2020 12:10 a.m.

AnthonyB0712 says... #21

Mercfh85 I'm not OP but I would highly suggest more ramp. The deck needs to be able to Hard cast the big creatures in the event feldon gets hated out and the earlier you can get him on the board the better.

August 19, 2020 7:26 a.m.

Lanzo493 says... #22

AnthonyB0712 I think Sarkhan, Fireblood is decent. He gets at least 1 discard, so that’s good. He does compete for the 3 drop space your commander is also in. If you run lots of dragons, then he’s really good. I used to run Sarkhan's Triumph in this deck wit how many dragons I used to have.

I dislike Kozilek, the Great Distortion. He’s narrow, and Feldon lacks a way to keep his hand full as well. Better cards for “countering” would be Dualcaster Mage and Emissary of Grudges.

Whats your thoughts on Steel Hellkite? It seems often suggested but I feel like with the ability to bring back removal options it feels "slow" and not something I necessarily want to waste feldon's ability on.

August 19, 2020 4:38 p.m.

Lanzo493 says... #24

Steel Hellkite has 2 things going for it. It can get rid of pesky artifacts and enchantments that slow you down and wipe out tokens. I have other removal options so I don’t run it myself.
