Dark Ascension

Hadarace, 13 years ago

I plan on combining this with my Morbid deck once Dark Ascension hits. Tell me what you think about it and who should be cut/added in order to effectively merge them.

Okay, so this deck basically is something akin to an overkill deck. It works best against infect decks, but I am gonna playtest it against U/B zombie control and so on.

Wolfbitten Captive and other changes.

sarpnasty, 13 years ago

Firstly, I going to added 4x Wolfbitten Captive  Flip to the deck for added speed. It allows me to do something on turns without playing spells. I also added Surgical Extraction against control so I can extra Mana Leaks and creature removals, as well as ratchet bombs, which really kills my deck. I also added Ludevic's Test Subject  Flip as an alternate win condition, and as a place to put unused mana, especially if i end up not countering spells on my opponents turn.

Okay, so i follow some rules for deck building: 1.) consistency is key - the more repetetive your deck is, the less you will say "WTF was i thinking?!" It also means that you avoid saying "Oh this would be cool in this deck" when it is in no way related to the theme. 2.) Change is necessary - Not just talkin about changing to fit standard. if you just went 0 - 6 at FNM, it's time to do deck surgery and take out what wasn't working. this usually leads to rule #1 being looked at constantly. 3.) Listen to your opponent - after the game, be sure to ask your opponent how they think you can improve. so far i have met very few people who won't be helpful and kind. also do the same if someone is obviously new and just is afraid to ask. its good sportsmanship! if they tell you something doesn't work, go back to rule #2. I took your ideas into consideration, for each one being sure to look over the rules. i playtested while skyping friends for rule #3, and came up with the changes, including the infinite reanimation combo provided by sun titan! any and all suggestions are apreciated! I'm hoping you are very vocal (please not abusive) about anything that could be improved! :-)

More red + budget

radouf, 13 years ago

Updated toward destructive druids! Still with heavy focus on biggies fo fit well with Mayael. 20+ big creatures, the rest ramps like crazy for big-fireball-business. Please comment and rate! I'll do same!

kev2dog, 13 years ago

I would also like to thank poorfrednoonan for helping me with this deck and giving me advice and suggestions.

kev2dog, 13 years ago

The way this deck runs, you want three mana in your opening hand, preferably one being an Isolated Chapel. You also want a Tempered Steel, though you can make due without one. Then you need a one mana drop, such as Vault Skirge, and a two mana drop such as Hovermyr. Your last card should hopefully be a Rusted Relic or bossily an Etched Monstrosity or Batterskull. This would be my ideal hand. You then just play out your cards in order of mana from least to greatest.

infernal plunge

franconbean, 13 years ago

removed 2 Mountain added 2 Infernal Plunge. good for sorting stuff out post combat, and creature sac no bigge since most of my guys die at the end of the turn anyway.

Fling swap

franconbean, 13 years ago

Changed Fling for Shock. It's low budget after all

kmard80, 13 years ago

since i only own 2 Lilianas i decided that a Jace, memory adept would fit nicly as a replacement. also i couldn't find my d**n Spellskites so i threw in 3 mana leaks to make the difference. it played fairly well this way, i figure it will due until i find the remaining cards.

Teseted

aloehart199, 13 years ago

I got to playtest the deck. went 9-1 against tempered steel and white geist. Issues with the deck became apparent and I hopefully addressed some of them in the changes. -2 Traveler's amulets, -1 Phantasmal Image, -1 Desperate Ravings, -3 Galvanic blast, -1 plains, -1 dragonskull summit +3 harvest pyre, +1 shimmering grotto, +2 Unburial rites, +1 Clifftop Retreat, +1 shrine of burning rage, +1 Liliana of the Veil. the changes address some issues. 1, Traveler's amulets were over kill. Even with just 1 in the deck It got me flooded with mana. Shimmering grotto proved far more useful and liliana made the deck just so much better since it does have a lot of graveyard shenanigans. The deck is slow and doesn't have much to deal with early threats, swapped the galvanic blasts for some harvest pyre as it is much more effective for removal and lets me get some use out of those cards I can't bring back (No snapcasters means no flashing back mana leak and doom blade). Unburial rites was originally in the deck purely to get back a titan if I had to mill him before I could cast him. Now it allows cheap casting as well as some protection against milling it out. It also lets me put liliana to better use. This is also where the image went to. Imaging a sun titan is a great boost, but this is not a solar flare deck and I don't have access to the mass images anyway. 1 titan is more than enough of a win condition for this deck and with 3 titans and 3 unburial rites this deck has more than enough to use him and get him back. Clifftop retreat for dragonskull just addressed mana issues post changes. Needed more white and black was overfull.

Whats There Now Thats Not From Innistrad Is How Its Been Since Zendikar Was In, The Few Changes Were All Made After It Was Winning Standard Nights ... Premise Became "Make Them Play A Mirror Match Until You Get The Removal Combo"

Deck Update

Solomon, 13 years ago

Hello Everyone!

Click here for this week's discussion!

Thank you so very much for your wonderful suggestions! For this week's update, I carefully went through all of the comments posted under this topic as of Jan. 16, 2012.

I have to say that I am very pleased with the advice given to me so far, offered so early on in the development of this deck. Without further ado, I would like to explain the changes incorporated into the creation of the second revision.

Thank you Strangelove, vishnarg, and Baphomet for your amazing recommendation of Gravecrawler! As soon as I spotted the card, I looked it up, and without hesitation, I decided to include it in this week's early update!

Zombie Apocalypse stood out to me as the perfect "one-sided" Patriarch's Bidding. Although it suffers from a minor drawback (one extra black mana), the use of this card as opposed to Patriarch's Bidding prevents disaster in the case of a Tribal versus Tribal match. However, in case the six CMC of Zombie Apocalypse is one too many, I have included a copy of the five mana alternative in the deck's sideboard.

I replaced Call to the Grave with Coat of Arms in order to better reflect the rush strategy of this deck. Since the former doesn't begin to take effect until the conclusion of your fifth turn, I have decided to replace it with the commonly used tribal artifact, which shines in full glory from as early as the beginning (first main phase) of the aforementioned turn.

I considered switching out Noxious Ghoul for an aggro creature like Unbreathing Horde, Phylactery Lich, or Skinrender, but decided against it when I realized there remained only six other sources of removal in the deck (from eight in the first revision). Additionally, taking out Noxious Ghoul would render any form of late-game removal extinct. Thus, I have decided to leave the creature in the deck's second revision.

Following this post are my comments for this week's Card of the Week. Again, thanks for all of the thoughtful comments! I greatly appreciate all of your suggestions. As I am still relatively new to Magic the Gathering, I would indeed greatly appreciate any suggestions and/or constructive criticism that you may have to offer.

P.S. @Strangelove and @TylerJohns I simply use markdown's image function. You can check it out at this link, also seen below!

Gravecrawler:

Gravecrawler

It does not seem entirely appropriate to comment on an unreleased card, but it seems to take the crown of popularity this week in the comment section. Thus, with the early update this week comes my interpretation of this incredible one-drop. My choice of this week is Gravecrawler.

The drawback on this creature is hardly damaging, since you'd most likely be using it to assault your opponent. Its ability to be played from the grave allows this Innistrad Zombie to come back again and again, and saves you an activated ability from Lord of the Undead.

All of this without mentioning that you get a creature with Power 2 for the price of one black mana! Use this to your advantage as you whack your enemy for maximum damage.

To conclude briefly, the comments recommending Gravecrawler have been dead on. As a new introduction to the deck, let's give this one-drop a warm welcome. I can't wait until Dark Ascension releases!

2nd FNM - Gedanken über Wizards als Creature Type

SilverhawkPX45, 13 years ago

In: Magus of the Future, Urza's Incubator, Cryptic Gateway, Mindlock Orb, Stranglehold

Out: Meishin, the Mind Cage, Star Compass, Fool's Demise, Sturmgeist, Psychosis Crawler

Land

BlackisBest, 13 years ago

What do you all think about my land distribution? Too many islands and not enough swamps? Should I get rid of the special lands? Also I have had some issues playing with corrupted zendikon, probably taking it out. Please tell me what you think about this, and my deck in general. Thank you

chillin, 13 years ago

I understand this is pretty much a tried-and-true build and a lot of the cards are a given, but what I would like to know: is it done right? I haven't put together a deck in years.

Grxis!

fantasylogic, 13 years ago

So I finally decided to add red. This includes Faithless Looting, Devil's Play and of course Priest of Urabrask for infinite mana (and damage with Perilous Myr and Falkenrath Noble.

Bloodline Keeper and Ravenous Demon?!

Basuldur, 13 years ago

Alright, so Bloodline Keeper  Flip seems really good, my 4 drop spot is sort of full at the moment though, should I add this, and if so what do I remove?

Also - Ravenous Demon is quite good, and if I can get him to transform and hit it'll be painful, what should I take out for him as well?
