Ideal of Overcoming

Legendary Enchantment

Escalate - Put a +1/+1 counter on target creature you don't control.

At the beginning of each upkeep, choose one or more:

  • Creativity - Scry 1, then you may discard a card. If you do, draw a card.

  • Strategy - Target permanent you control gains hexproof and indestructible until end of turn.

  • Courage - Creatures you control and creature spells you cast this turn gain haste and first strike until end of turn.

Ideal of Overcoming can be your commander.

Create any card you really want to see. Don't worry about power level; make this your own personal fantasy. Regulars and new participants welcome! Don't be shy!

I have built a Volo deck built around double good cards as well as ones that may not be as good on their own but become discounted versions of themselves because of volo. I was playtesting it when I saw a interaction I didn't before. If you have Volo, Guide to Monsters on the battlefield and then cast Mirror Image could I have it enter as a copy of volo and still have volo copy it( practically double it) with his ability since it does not become a copy of volo until it enters and therefore meets the subtype condition for coping?

plakjekaas on Anowon, the Ruin Thief + …

The Water Crystal states: one or more, then that many plus four. Anowon, the Ruin Thieffoil attacks and isn't blocked. Anowon triggers it's ability that triggers once per player taking damage: damaged player mills cards. How many cards? One for every point of combat damage. In the trigger, that's one number. That's the number modified by the Water Crystal, so four more than the damage taken by rogues in combat.

That's how it works, Anowon triggers once for every time a player is dealt combat damage by rogues. Because the amount it's variable, the amount it's worded to be variable. But it's one amount per trigger.

Aren't these the best kinds of decks? Even though it might not be competitive, this uses an underutilized card in the way it was supposed to work. So: Good job!

I guess I didn't consider that when I came up with the name. As my phone seems to not let me autofill the username, logging in on mobile is always taking some effort ;D

Thanks seshiro_of_the_orochi. You’re almost certainly right. This started as a fun build when I first came across the namesake card, and at first I didn’t intend it to be anything serious. It’s rather shaky, but it actually turned out much more playable than I first thought. It’s still caught in that no man’s land between ‘vaguely reliable if not exactly competitive’ and ‘this technically functions’, so anything to tip the scales in the other direction is worth considering.

I’ll go ahead and add your suggestions to the maybeboard in case we get some deck tech in the future that gives me good reason to restructure this one. Thanks, as always. Also, your username is a pain in the butt to type in on my phone here, what with those darned underscores XD

Awesome idea for a deck! Have you considered a 1-of of Archon of Falling Stars as a way to reanimate Mortal Combat? This would also work quite well with some copies of Dread Return.

Thoughts?

Something... Unusual

Creature - Mutant Artificer

Whenever this creature is blocked you may have an opponent Surveil 2, then reveal the top card of their library. If they do, this creature gains first strike and + X + X until end of turn where X is the mana value of the card on top of their library.

Put a flying counter on a creature an opponent controls: You get an Energy Counter.

Czarnian90 on Hellegion, Shadows and Flames (Raphael)

After several more battles, things have begun to shift within the Hellegion. While the Balrog couldn’t even be bothered to wake, another giant is slowly taking the stage. Rakdos’s power and strength are rising, and so is his influence within the Hellegion. It’s becoming very likely that he’ll soon demand the position of commander.

Several black demons have stepped back, leaving Hellegion in search of their own designs. Who knows if they’ll return or reappear in another deck. I’ve heard whispers about Liliana — she would probably welcome some of them.

Feaster of Fools, Goremand, Arbiter of Woe, Dreadhound, Archfiend of Spite, and Embodiment of Agonies have departed. Perforating Artist no longer amuses Rakdos with his petty tricks, and the skeletons have turned to dust.

Rakdos’s growing presence is felt in cards like Rakdos, the Showstopper and Rakdos Joins Up. Juri, Master of the Revue joins to us, and there's now more spotlight for Judith through Judith, Carnage Connoisseur.

Belzenlok’s influence deepens with Rite of Belzenlok, and someone powerful has joined the Hellegion — Ardyn, the Usurper. Though his price is high and he leans heavily into black, I decided to accept his services.

But other beings circle the fire, waiting for their moment.

As Rakdos’s power swells, cards like Rakdos, Patron of Chaos and the guild’s signature mana rocks — Rakdos Cluestone, Rakdos Keyrune, Rakdos Locket — are seeing more attention to support the shift toward a stronger Rakdos color identity.

Infernal Grasp is another devilish trick straight from the pit.

The paths ahead are unclear. Dark beings still linger at the edge, ready to offer their power to the Hellegion — for a price: Skirsdag High Priest, Doom Whisperer, Overseer of the Damned, Spawn of Mayhem, and others...

I also cracked a Mount Doom recently and added it to the deck. I think it fits quite well here.

Scourge of the Vengeful

Legendary Creature - Dragon

Flying, Trample

Whenever this creature enters or attacks, you may destroy up to one target artifact, up to one target enchantment, and up to one target land. For each permanent destroyed this way, its controller reveals cards from the top of their library until they reveal a card that shares a card type with it and puts it onto the battlefield, then shuffles the rest into their library.

wallisface on Grim Feaster and Orzhov Pallbearers

Apologies in advance if the below critique comes across a bit harsh.

These are both extremely weak cards, both in their original forms and your recreations.

The Golgari one you could easily have only cost 2 mana, as well as remove the self-damage clause, and it would still be unlikely to see any play at all.

The Orzhov one you can easily reduce to at least costing only 3 mana, as well as giving it an additional keyword like Flying or First-Strike.

I think with both cards, the reference material is super old, and a lot more could have been done to make these cards feel unique or different (as opposed to just copying rules text onto a creature body).

DemonDragonJ Yeah, that's pretty much it outside of Limited formats. I picked Findbroker as an example because it's a good representative of the philosophy, not because it's an especially efficient card.

DemonDragonJ on Grim Feaster and Orzhov Pallbearers

I find both Grim Feast and Proper Burial to be fascinating cards, but they both are rather underpowered in that they cannot do anything on their own (especially since the latter costs 4 mana to cast), so I have created creature versions of each of them, as seen, here.

Grim Feaster Show

For a mere 1 mana more over Grim Feast, this card is a 3/3 creature, and it made sense, to me, for it to be a zombie. This card likely could have been mono-black, as neither of its effects are particularly green, but the original card was black/green, so I made this card those colors, as well. I contemplated giving this creature deathtouch, to trigger its second ability more easily, but I decided that that would make it too powerful, so I did not give it such an ability.

Orzhov Pallbearers Show

I gave this creature vigilance because pallbearers are supposed to be watchful and careful as they carry the casket of the deceased to their grave, and I initially did not wish to give it a name that associated it with a specific faction, but I could not think of a better name, and the artwork of Proper Burial, the card that inspired this one, clearly depicts members of the Orzhov guild, so I decided that that was acceptable, in this case.

What does everyone here think about these creatures? How well did I do, with them?

DemonDragonJ on How Are Black, White, and …

All of these are excellent responses, so I thank everyone, for your answers!

legendofa, why would any player ever use Golgari Findbroker over Eternal Witness, when the former creature has a stricter casting cost and can return only permanents? I presume that its advantage is its higher power and toughness, making it better in combat?

DemonDragonJ on How Can Tutor Effects Remain …

DreadKhan, I was new to the game during the original Ravnica block, but Brainspoil is definitely a terrible card, and I cannot imagine ever actually casting it, rather than using its transmute ability, and, on that subject, I dearly would like to see WotC print additional cards with transfigure, which currently exists only on Fleshwrither.

DemonDragonJ on Commander/EDH Game Changers

Crow_Umbra, I would never do anything that degenerate, as Kinnan is merely a support card/value engine in my Chulance deck, and most of the creatures in that deck, outside of Craterhoof Behemoth, are fairly minor creatures that simply provide value, for me, until I can assemble one of that deck's win conditions.

SaberTech on How Are Black, White, and …

In terms of the flavour of each colours' mechanics:

Black doesn't care about the individuality or humanity of what it reanimates. The corpse is just a tool to use for the Black mage's goals. Black gets cheap reanimation effects because it doesn't care about bringing the person back to life, it just wants to get those bones moving. That's why a number of black's reanimation effects also make the creature a zombie when brought back from the graveyard or depict the creature being revived as a zombie in the artwork.

White's reanimation is framed either as the uplifting of the weak (characterized by generally limiting the reanimation target to things with a mana value of 2 or 3) or as some sort of grand miracle of revival that heals and gives a champion a second chance (See higher costed effects like Karmic Guide). It tries to convey a sense of faith that all will be well and people will endure.

Green generally returns cards back to the hand instead of the battlefield because it's framed more as a new member of a species taking the place of a dead one, like when a bear gets to take up the territory of another bear that has passed away. It's all about the cycle of nature continuing on. Even with cards like Reincarnation, the flavour is that one life was given up and a new one takes its place. Green doesn't care about a given individual, once a person's time is up then that's it. Their passing gives room for the growth of another.

Crashing Drawbridge is in the deck because the way ninjas work with doublestrike. you can First strike dammage with a creature. then you can ninjutsu in a ninja for regular strike dammage. so on the following turn i will be dropping the creature i returned and use drawbridge to give it haste.

The idea is to attack with a creature with double strike, and then the ninja comes in and all of the equipment that detatched from previous creature triggers when the ninjas comes in and they do bonus dammage on their attack. Then i can cast the 1-2 drop and use crashing to give it haste and ninja in the next creature

Containment Construct is good because my commader causes when i attack to connive(draw a card and discard) that is why i have some madness stuff in the deck also.

Baleful Strix will prob go back in im just trying to figure out room and have to drop a bunch of cards trying to figure out what.

You are prob right about Spell Pierce will prob remove it. just was lookin gat 1 drop counters.

Banner of Kinship is absurd in your Build, Ruinous Ultimatum might come in Handy too, in a few Matches. Moogles' Valor might be fun too… Since you don’t run Vito or marauding blightpriest Bloodthirsty Conqueror would not raise the Deck to Bracket 4,… Just a few Thoughts, You made me want to build Vampires with this Deck instead of Orzhov Aristocrats, definite +1!

It looks like most of these are not standard legal, due to sets cycling out. This means to turn it into a Standard-legal deck, you would need to trade out all the cards with red letters with ones from newer sets that do the same things. This site is a good overview of how Standard works, and which sets are currently legal. https://draftsim.com/mtg-standard-rotation/

I tried copying this deck into Modern, and only nine cards showed up as needing replaced. So I personally, as a slightly impatient deck-building beginner-intermediate would start there, replace cards from earlier sets with ones from newer releases, then play it a bit to see how it works. From there, keeping in mind cards that aren't Standard-legal, find ones with similar functions that are legal. If you go to Edit, then change the format to Modern, you should see less red card names, and know where to start for card replacement.

Not sure how much this helps, or what your Magic experience is, but I hope it works out!

I'm a fan of Sunflare Shaman as a potential finisher myself. I don't think you'd want it as a 4x but 1-2 seems reasonable here.

DreadKhan on How Can Tutor Effects Remain …

I'm a fan of Diabolic Revelation, obviously a bit of a build around. I think most tutors suffer from people wanting them to be almost as good as Demnonic/Vampiric Tutor, and those are badly designed/broken cards that ate bans, yet because they exist they normalize something that hurts the game. Diabolic Tutor sees a surprising amount of casual play, and I think that's a reasonable card.

I also enjoyed Transmute, but I will forever be doing penance for having actually cast Brainspoil, is that actually the worst removal spell ever printed? I think it's worse than the Portal stuff, 5 mana for sorcery speed conditional removal with an upside that almost never mattered from the day it was first used? I know they didn't want it to be a good spell, but even Murder was only 3 mana, and this is MUCH WORSE than Murder. I still wonder if they'll do something like Transmute for Boros, only it's restricted to finding Artifacts/Enchantments to keep it from being too useful. I just hope they don't nerf the spells THAT hard.

Nohx on Ninja Equip * Needs Help

I really like the idea here. Keep in mind that you can't give double strike to the creature you ninjutsu in.

You have maybe a bit too much counter magic for my taste. Spell Pierce only works in the early game. Since you can give unblockable, you could maybe switch that out with Swan Song.

I also don't really know what you want to use Crashing Drawbridge for, unless you're hardcasting your ninjas.

You have Containment Construct but I don't see any other discard synergy in your deck.

Baleful Strix is a really good draw engine with ninjutsu.

Sorry to put my 2 pence worth in, but you could also look at the Battlebond lands. You could also potentially consider a Verge land Willowrush Verge which again could sort your land quandy with an untapped land. Your shocks should let you hit both land types from it.

Interesting take on Xyris there legendofa. If you're going to targeting opposing creatures a lot with enchantments and goad-abilities, you'd want to make sure they can't employ hexproof against you.
