The One Ring

Legendary Artifact

Indestructible (Damage and effects that say "destroy" don't destroy it.)

When this enters, if you cast this, you gain protection from everything until your next turn. ((Remember the acronym debt.) You can't be damaged, enchanted, equipped, blocked or targeted by anything. Anything attached to you immediately falls off.)

At the beginning of your upkeep, you lose 1 life for each burden counter on The One Ring/

: Put a burden counter on The One Ring, then draw a card for each burden counter on The One Ring.

gildor28, I had Skullclamp at first. Took it out for the larger draw cards like The One Ring.

I am trying to build a competitive early game version of Rat Colony without strictly relying on comboing off. I need draw power and I don't know where to go! Paying two life and drawing two cards isn't going to cut it.

I am already using several cards like the following...

Ad Nauseam

Bolas's Citadel

The One Ring

Click here to review the deck, please. I need suggestions.

Buried Ruin for sure needs to go in for recursion. I don't really feel like the tribe CMC is high enough to work with Urza's Incubator.

Imp's Mischief sounds cool. I will have to think on that one a bit. Like you, I feel like draw is my weakest link here. I don't really know what cards would be best outside of Bolas's Citadel and The One Ring. When I look at the draw spells, including the ones already in the deck, I honestly am not that impressed with any of them.

draw is for sure what needs to be focused on.

Actually, I see what to do here. Thank you for the suggestion, Knight of Autumn is kind of too good not to include. The fact that it's main use is to destroy something, but its backup abilities are both super relevant with either lifegain or +1/+1 counters is too good not to just use. Not to mention being a creature that costs 3 or less, so it can be substituted in the mainboard.

Despark and now Anguished Unmaking were about exiling a permanent Abrupt Decay couldn't. But not only does that no longer seem necessary, with things like The One Ring already banned, but I already have other ways to deal with threats or specific things I would need removed. And with Anguished Unmaking already costing 3, I might as well switch that one out for Knight of Autumn.

Great suggestion, thanks!

I think having color specific artifacts is fine, and introduces a new means of power regulation for them. Although being colorless is a key feature of their original identity in the game, I think both flavor and "safety valves" for power are both valid reasons to include color when possible.

Being colorless can run the risk of making certain artifacts ubiquitous if they are powerful enough. Looking at The One Ring as a kind of more recent example, one means of "toning down" this card would have been to include as part of its casting cost. Having Black as part of its casting identity would still be flavorful regarding the greed and corrupting nature of The One Ring.

Another case to look at would be Crucible of Worlds and Conduit of Worlds as more direct side by side comparisons. By making Conduit a Green card (and more expensive), it adds some wiggle room to give it a bit more utility than what Crucible has, but safety valves that additional utility behind a specific color identity, additional mana cost, and conditional sorcery speed activation. Imagine if Conduit was instead colorless and cost , this would give other colors access to the nonland permanent recursion that typically don't have access to it.

My first reaction here was the Modern Horizons sets. They were made to shake of the format, and they did that a little too well. Ocelot Pride, Phlage, Titan of Fire's Fury, Glaring Fleshraker, and Psychic Frog are some of the newest examples, and they pretty much immediately jumped to to the top of a bunch of different power formats. All of the 60-card eternal formats have key cards that got their first print with the last two years, and bans are happening more often than ever.

The bar is definitely being pushed. I just wish supplemental sets wouldn't push it quite so hard. Orcish Bowmasters and The One Ring also need a mention here.

Recommended cards that aren't black but feel like they should/could be:

The One Ring: This is black card draw.

Skrelv, Defector Mite: Mostly the phyrexian mana and artwork. Highly useful for the one shot kill.

Suspicious Bookcase: Some of the artwork on this card comes straight from Halloween.

Defiler of Faith: Life as a resource.

Shadowspear: Lore-wise it's a corrupted weapon from the underworld.

Basilisk Collar: Both keywords are common in black.

Blackblade Reforged: Literally a demon's sword.

Nettlecyst: Black token and phyrexian.

Tarrian's Soulcleaver: Graveyard synergy.

Bloodforged Battle-Axe: Mostly artwork/name/flavor.

Grafted Exoskeleton: Black themed downside. Infect in black's wheelhouse.

Bloodthirsty Blade: Blood as a cost.

Blade of the Bloodchief: Death as a benefit.

Quietus Spike: Multiple black creatures have this effect.

Hope that helps.
