Mikaeus, the Unhallowed

Legendary Creature — Zombie Cleric

Intimidate

Whenever a Human deals damage to you, destroy it.

Other non-Human creatures you control get +1/+1 and have undying. (When a creature with undying dies, if it had no +1/+1 counters on it, return it to the battlefield under its owner's control with a +1/+1 counter on it. Tokens cease to exist before they can be returned.)

Flarhoon13 on Kaervek the Merciless, Vampires & Doomsday Demons

Having completed my quest to play all 52 of my decks, I decided to try getting a win with all of my decks

October 4

Kaervek the Merciless, Vampires & Doomsday Demons second loss. Couldn't stop the Henzie "Toolbox" Torre. Mikaeus, the Unhallowed brought back so many creatures. Twice. Through two board wipes. My losers' record drops to 8-16

Since you are running Mikaeus, the Unhallowed, Triskelion, and Buried Alive I find that it's helpful to have a couple reanimation spells that can get two creatures out of the graveyard at once. Victimize and Living Death are my usual picks.

With Jarad in the deck, Coffin Queen might be worth considering as a way of repeatedly returning large creatures to the board for sac fodder.

Titanoth Rex could be useful in Mimeoplasm. It's a big body that puts itself into the graveyard for cheap, draws you a card, and can give Mimeoplasm trample if it doesn't already have an evasive ability.

Ghostly Pilferer is another potential card for the deck that functions similar to Psychic Frog and Likeness Looter. Cheap, lets you discard, provides card draw, and gives you an evasion option if you end up copying it as your main creature for Mimeoplasm. I like that it lets you passively draw cards any time an opponent casts their commander from the command zone.

I need a little more clarification on the objective of the deck. Are you wanting a deck with the longest list of combos, a deck with a large number of completely unique combos that you want to draw naturally, or a deck with a large number of completely unique combos and you will tutor the last piece? Each different style is going to require different combos.

Without any specific guidance on how you want to build the deck I am just going to list some of my favorites. I'll just list off cards, LMK if you need an explanation for any.

Nice deck so far. I also really like Zombies and have a zombie recursion themed deck. Check it out for some ideas. Gravewater

I would consider adding Mikaeus, the Unhallowed and Cauldron of Souls By themselves they can keep your zombies on the field, but when they are both on the field together their abilities cancel each other out and will keep zombies coming back over and over until they are removed.

Also pulling Rot Hulk from the Graveyard with cards like Persist comboed with Gray Merchant of Asphodel is disgusting.

Im not a huge fan of most Planeswalkers except Liliana, Dreadhorde General is pretty good. They tend to get focused down quick and some their best abilities require a minimum of 3-4 turns to get built up.

Hope this helps!

Nice deck, I love me some etb/death trigger abuse Marchesa. I do have some suggestions for you though and I'll break it down by card function.

Finisher:

Gray Merchant of Asphodel's lifegain seems counterproductive but with alternate sources of +1+1 counters your life total doesn't matter. In 9 years of running Marchesa, Gary has ended more games than any other card here and it's not remotely close. I personally recommend a clone suite to sac when he enters so they all reenter as Garys (Phantasmal Image, Flesh Duplicate, and Phyrexian Metamorph). Note that Imperial Recruiter abuse will look up Gary, Clones, and Bloodletter of Aclazotz in one go around the table.

Jokulhaups is a bit of a dick move, but it will end games since all your creatures come back to an empty board.

Alternate +1+1 Counters:

Anduril, Narsil Reforged is on attack and even gets counters on your fresh non-attacking stuff.

Mikaeus, the Unhallowed lets you abuse all your non-humans and he enables some infinite combos with Persist creatures.

Vigean Graftmage looks underwhelming but he comes down before and immediately protects Marchesa and he let's you abuse any etb/death trigger on everyone's turn (itself + 1 other).

Thran Vigil is only on your turn but this card still puts in serious work.

Metallic Mimic doesn't need a tribal deck here. When it first comes down you name humans or wizards to immediately protect Marchesa but you sac it to rename the type to your most abuseable etb/death trigger as needed.

Protection:

Ripples of Potential is a great answer to non-destroy wraths including Farewell.

Removal:

Canoptek Tomb Sentinel will hit anything non-land but most importantly it's an abuseable effect that hits enchantments.

Feel free to check out my list for ideas. Upvotes on any of my decks are appreciated (especially since it'd be upvote #200). Every Masochist Needs a Marchesa to Love Them

Metroid_Hybrid on Maxing out pre-Modern cEDH

I have a single, serious cEDH deck built around Yawgmoth, Thran Physicianfoil— but with a single, important caveat: EVERY card in the deck that is not explicitly part of the central combo has an “Old” border; that is, either legitimately has a pre-Modern (pre-8ED) printing, or at least received a “Timeshifted” printing after the fact..

But with the printing of Hancock, Ghoulish Mayor, and the recent “Timeshifted” reprinting of Toxic Deluge, I am compelled to asked the T/O community for the first time in over 3 years……

How can I max-out the competitive potential of this particular deck, while still maintaining the said “pre-Modern” prerequisite?

Possible adds

Portal to Phyrexia: really good value

Back for Seconds: 3 mana, grabs 2 creatures and if you bargain a 2/2 token you put a mana value 4 or less on the battlefield

Scrap Trawler: Loops with commander ashnod's and myr retriever for infinite colorless mana, 2/2's and many other triggers

Cabal Coffers: better cabal stronghold

Soul Transfer: always going to have a artifact so good 2 for 1 removal and recursion (downside is its sorcery)

Unshakable Tail: makes clues whenever a 1/more creatures are milled and if you sac a clue can return it to your hand

Crypt Ghast: good mana doubler especially with 21 swamp and urborg

Mikaeus, the Unhallowed: undying counts as hitting graveyard and leaving so it triggers your commander and saves you from a blas act

Rowan's Grim Search: instant card draw and mill cards you don't want seems solid in your deck

Braids, Arisen Nightmare: maybe, you make a lot of tokens with your commander so might not be a bad sac and draw

Slagstone Refinery: this is a big maybe since it doesn't trigger on tokens but could give a lot of powerstone value throughout the game

Darkness: I just think this is a funny card that gets people out of nowhere

Gidgetimer on Build a Deck with Me …

An important part of deckbuilding that I haven't seen you mention in either of these first two articles and that is especially important in this once since it is based from a combo is metainformation. This is not to say information about the meta that you will be playing the deck into (though that is important too), but information about the game in general.

One example would be existing archetypes or general categories of decks. With a mono-blue blink combo and wanting to add colors metainformation informs us that a established archetype is Bant Blink. It is tried and true and has a proven depth of field for support of blink. You subvert this by going Dimir, which I appreciate.

Another consideration is known synergies with cards you are already running.

By no means do you have to follow all metainformation. And you also don't need to worry about missing something and therefore stress about knowing all the info. But just being generally aware of what is possible and proven will allow you to make informed deckbuilding decisions.
