Brain Fusion (Abusing a loophole)

Modern Combo Control Jank

Saw Caleb Durwood of channelfireball using a brain combo deck and decided to build my own version. The deck uses a loophole in the rules (specifically 702.101a) to be able to cast a fused card for cheap off of Brain in a Jar.

Here's how it works.

  1. The brain says you can cast spells without paying its mana cost if its converted mana cost is equal to the number of counters on Brain in a Jar
  2. In every zone except for the stack, split cards have all characteristics of both halves. So Beck / Call has a converted mana cost of 2 and 6.
  3. You have 2 counters on Brain in Jar, therefore you can cast any cards with a CMC of 2, even if they also have another CMC.
  4. Fuse says "You may cast one or both halves of this card from your hand".
  5. Since you can cast this card without paying its mana cost, you might as well cast both sides at the same time by using Fuse.

In short, with by putting a second charge counter on a brain, you can cast both sides of Beck / Call for 1 mana.

3 quick points:

  1. If you reveal a split card to Sorin, Grim Nemesis, the life your opponents lose is the total cmc of both halves. (revealing Beck / Call domes them for 8.)
  2. Day's Undoing is another card designed to be cast only with the brain in a jar, specifically on your opponents turn. Starts off your turn with a fresh grip of counterspells. Who said you couldn't play a power 9 card in modern? (Looking at you Timetwister)
  3. Against certain decks (jund and burn come to mind) you might not have time to fully exploit the brain or be faced with too much hate for you brain. If you need/want to, you can side out the beck/call and some combination of brains and other slower spells (in addition to other normal sideboarding) and plan on just winning with Monastery Mentor

Never actually mentioned it but with amonkhet they changed the rules and closed this loophole. Deck no longer works.
