Just a note: if you sideboard in Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, then not only will you have to pay 1 extra for Sram's Expertise but also for Beck.

Hey man, I just happened to take another look at that Primer I posted earlier in this thread. One minor quirk of that Esper Brain deck that I had not noticed previously was the interaction between Yahenni's Expertise and Beck/Call. You can cast both sides of the card fused for no mana using Yahenni, and the -3/-3 resolves before you can do anything with the other card, so your tokens hit the board just fine. In other words, YE acts as both a pretty strong board wipe and a way to cheat out B/C. Pretty nice touch.

I still like the idea of adding in maindeck discard to protect the combo, such as inquisition, Thoughtseize, Duress, or Despise. It acts as a turn 1 play as well, and if you throw in Brain in a Jar, you'll have a one mana sorcery to cast with it (with the ability to do it during their upkeep, mind you).

I see your reasoning for Manamorphose, but I think your lands should get you there just fine. I guess it is a pseudo-ramp with scions though. Ultimately your call. Plus, it is ramp with Brain in a Jar ( although you'd want to cast Beck with brain over manamorphose).

I'm not sure that Gifts package works. If I were playing against you, I think I'd put Noxious Revival and Thopter Foundry in the yard. Now you have to pay for Lingering Souls, and Sword of the Meek is either stuck in your hand, or gives a token +1/+2, and that's it. If you went with a 3-card Gifts package, and I gave you Foundry or Revival, you need an artifact on the board to sac to make your first token. If you went Souls-Foundry-Sword, Foundry is stuck in the yard. If you just went with Foundry and Sword, Foundry is stuck in the yard. Hence, you're back to needing Academy Ruins.

As far as the Brain in a Jar thing, I'm actually just getting back into Modern after a long hiatus, so I'm not very familiar with that card. It seems like it would allow you to drop some big spells at a big discount, but Beck doesn't necessarily win you the game, and it's unclear how Brain is part of a good Gifts pile (I could be missing something), if that's even the intention.

You're right that totally reactive Draw-Go control isn't typically the right idea in Modern. Essentially, I'd rather Thoughtseize the best card in your hand then try to Mana Leak it, because it costs 1 less mana and I get to see your hand. You also play around my Mana Leak if you're dropping a Tarmogoyf with 5 lands in play. And there are more "can't be countered" cards like Abrupt Decay in the format then there are things like Loxodon Smiter. That doesn't mean you should run 4x Thoughtseize and no Counterspells, but you get the idea. I would say that you can play somewhat more reactively if you know you can drop a Wrath on turn 4, but that's far from every game, and completely ineffective against a number of decks that aren't aggro or midrange.

This seems like a solid deck, but I don't see the point of Manamorphose in the deck. Beck seems a little too cute for this without Brain in a Jar or any of the expertises. If you say your combo has too many weaknesses, then hand disruption might be useful, such as Inquisition of Kozilek and Thoughtseize, since you otherwise have no turn one plays, and those can strip combo-killing cards out of your opponents hand.

I playtested this and it's honestly a lot of fun, you've done a great job here!

Main deck looks really solid, can't really find much wrong with it.

If there's any suggestion I could make, it would probably be Beck.

The Beck part of it is pretty cheap to cast, you can take advantage of Hunted Phantasm and Hunted Troll and draw yourself a bunch of cards.

The Call part is probably less relevant because it's a bit expensive but hey, if you got the mana why not?

I'm not sure what you would take out though, like I said the main deck looks solid.

Some other cards I came across were Curse of the Swine and Swan Song but I suppose those aren't very good because they make 2/2 tokens instead of 1/1.

Good luck with this deck though, it's pretty awesome

I've also had issues actually winning in play testing

the 10-11 other combo enabler's tend to clog up my draws before i can storm out.

I would replace the Chalice/presence combo for Beck and Lotus Petal and Dark Ritual for Culling the Weak because right now there are too many cards that hinder your ability to storm once you start storming.

Summoner's Pact may also be useful as it lets you fetch spirit guide or one of your many 0drops all while upping the storm count, as is Pact of Negation in the sideboard.

Nice, when I first saw you pull Bronzebeak Moa I immediately thought tokens. Looks like you had the same idea lol. Beck could work for draw and tokens. Emeria Angel is a decent option as well. It's looking good though. Moa could get out of control fast!
