Biblioplex Assistant

Artifact Creature — Gargoyle

Flying

When this enters the battlefield, put up to one target instant or sorcery card from your graveyard on top of your library.

When cutting cards, the question to ask isn't "is this card good enough", it's "will this card help me win the game".

Meteor Golem is good, but as you say, very expensive. 7 to destroy one permanent isn't worth it. Can you get the same effect for cheaper? Angel of Serenity is very similar in cost and effect, but can recurse parts of your combo as well as after blinking once or twice is almost total creature dominance. Similar with Runaway Boulder, it's expensive creature control, yes it works well with recursion, but if you can blink it enough to achieve dominance... you could be blinking something that will get you closer to victory instead.

Even Sun Titan, an incredibly powerful card... Doesn't actually help your deck win. It could get back Fiend Hunter or Wormfang Drake if they're dead, which is definitely good, but besides that, even if your combo is going the only way it could convert that to a win state is with Commander's Sphere or Mind Stone. Now... that may not be a sun titan problem, so much that it's that you aren't taking full potential of sun titan. If you swapped a land out for Flooded Strand, that combo is now Pay 1 Life: Put an Island or Plains (including non-basic land like Hallowed Fountainfoil) into play. Cheating land into play is doubly good, because now your not going to draw that land. Fabled Passage is then the next best of the search land, but they all work with sun titan.

Biblioplex Assistant can get your spells back... but it's to the top of your library, so it's also chewing up a card draw. If you have unlimited access to the top of your library, you have probably already won and don't need those spells anymore.

Venser, Shaper Savant on the other hand... he's a reusable counter spell, only more versatile. He isn't going to be a key part of your combo, but when you're putting that last piece of the combo together... he's going to be there stopping anyone from interfering. On top of that he's board control when you need him and he's not even that expensive.

One thing that you're missing is cheap card draw. Wall of Omens being the standard. You can drop it early and it gets you one card closer to winning, and it's a blocker. There are a bunch of similar cards as well. More cards means you are closer to putting your combo together.

Interestingly, you can also drop anything that gives you unlimited hand size. It will never help you win the game, in fact, being able to discard something that might be recursable to the battlefield might help you. It's just not something you need to spend mana on.

I would really appreciate suggestions of what to cut. I'm looking at a few things.

Venser, Shaper Savant is one of them because it may be really difficult to bounce him at the correct time, and his effect returns cards to hand.

Meteor Golem is a seven drop. Big number.

Biblioplex Assistant it's basically just a worse Mnemonic Wall. On the other side, mnemonic wall is still one of the best cards in the deck because it goes infinite with 1 to 2 mana artifacts, and the same is true with biblioplex assistant.

Well, here is what I found: Anarchist, which seems over costed but will leave you a body you can Blim away, Ardent Elementalist is similar but 1 mana less. Backdraft Hellkite can let you Flashback Offering, but that's one and done as it's exiled after. Biblioplex Assistant has Flying, but that's a bad thing to give an opponent obviously. Bloodthirsty Adversary is another one off. Charmbreaker Devils are one of the more interesting ones, but it's awfully clunky. Efreet Flamepainter seems half-decent, but isn't repeatable. I'm a bit curious if Finale of Promise would work at all, it's annoying that you'd need both types, but if you can copy a Dark Ritual/Seething Song and Harmless Offering you can still do more stuff after. Invoke Calamity might be a fit, it's a lot of mana but is a strong effect. Goblin Dark-Dwellers is a beefy body but probably not something you'd want to donate after. I'm not sure if you could get in for damage with the spell-creature, but if you can Magar of the Magic Strings is pretty interesting. If you can get enough mana together Mizzix's Mastery might work, 4 mana to recast a 3 mana spell isn't terrible I'd say. Ogre Battlecaster might do it's thing more than once with First Strike. I'm not sure if Shreds of Sanity is reasonable, 2R is pretty cheap for this, but having to discard sucks. Revolutionist seems openly bad unless you can cast it via Madness. Spellweaver Helix is cool but might be too janky, but it can generate more Offerings (and another Sorcery I guess). I don't think you have a wide enough board to use it, but if you added more creatures then Surge to Victory could fit. Hope something in that pile I could dig out will work, there are some really pushed options like Yawgmoth's Will and Underworld Breach too fwiw, I guess you could Blim away Breach when you're done with it?

Random thought, but if you're fine with recursion effects maybe Oriq Loremage would fit in here? Probably would require more building around though, but Entomb is a great effect to have stapled to a creature if you've got the right cards.

griffstick That sounds like a very Dungeons & Dragons interpretation of gargoyles.

TypicalTimmy I think gargoyles tend to be artifact creatures when they're carved or shaped--compare Tower Gargoyle and Biblioplex Assistant to the more natural Kjeldoran Gargoyle and Basalt Gargoyle. An Earth Elemental doesn't have differentiation; it's basically a pile of rocks or whatever in a more or less humanoid shape (or animalistic, for Greater Stone Spirit and probably others). That's my working theory.

Reaver Gargoyle

Creature - Gargoyle

Flying, deathtouch

Reaver Gargoyle gets -1/-1 for each creature your opponents control.

Reaver Gargoyle gets +1/+1 for each creature you control named Reaver Gargoyle.

this looks like fun! why no Consume Spirit ? is Songs of the Damned just for Death Denied ?

now that black has Biblioplex Assistant you can infinite loop Songs of the Damned as long as you have Spark Reaper , Stinkweed Imp and Tortured Existence which is really sick we used to need red or blue. its a lot of cards but if you get imp and tortured you should just be able to combo off.

Mystic Reflection , Biblioplex Assistant , Bolas's Citadel to Massacar's combo and and you'll get tokens of whatever you want and cast spells that are in your graveyard by paying life.

This still doesn't need Monkey Cage to work, but it's a fun card with Goblin Welder , Thornbite Staff and a sac outlet.

Hey Poooootato, thank you for checking the deck out and the comment. Since I wrote the description I have seen more decks come out trying to use the backside of Extus. However, many of them try to leverage the sacrifice creatures line to lower the casting cost and I believe that is a trap due to the fact you have to sacrifice the creatures as you cast the spell; unlike something like Dargo, the Shipwrecker that counts creatures sacrificed this turn, so you are setting yourself up to be blown out when the spell is countered on the stack. Even if it is not countered you now have to get even more creatures into play to sacrifice to cast the spell again. It is just too much effort for what you get out of it. Building Extus, Oriq Overlord  Flip as I have in this deck is much less effort for much greater effect.

If you want to play it aristocrat, I agree with you that you want to use some of the very few cards in magic that return an instant or sorcery back to your hand and cheap spells to try to get extra value with short loops. I have been working on deck focusing on the front of Extus, Oriq Overlord  Flip by using Biblioplex Assistant , Living Lightning , Returned Pastcaller , and Anarchist with various effects to do these loops. However, it feels very fragile and when I make it feel less fragile, I just push it into a generic aristocrats style and I might as well just play a better aristocrats commander at that point. If I ever get it feeling better I will post it here.
