Re-tool to Humans

Re-tooled to a human-heavy aggro deck to try out.

Took out Entreat

Hyperguy, 12 years ago

So I took out the Entreat the Angels and put in some smaller cards such as Augur of Bolas and Forbidden Alchemy. After doing this I found myself lacking real bombs. A single Drogskol Reaver and a couple Tamiyo, the Moon Sages just won't cut it. I need something that has a lasting effect whenever it hits the board. Unfortunately, Grave Titan and Consecrated Sphinx are long gone and the only thing replacing them at the moment is Drogskol Reaver. Maybe putting another one of them in here isn't that bad of an idea...

Too much slow mana...

Mogalicous, 12 years ago

Updating the list, I found some major problems; in my deck, there were only 4 swamps and a lot of slow mana. I should find ways to speed up the deck and be able to get to a stronger late game.

FNM NOV 16

Gigglestomp, 12 years ago

I went to the FNM near my apartment instead of back home with my brother this week. Instead of 7-1am this one consisted of 4 rounds with the top 4 getting different amounts of booster packs. What follows is how I did at this new place.

*For anyone who hasn't been following my deck, clicking the title of the update should bring up old comments. Clicking the title of the top update there should bring up older ones as well.***

My deck has changed some since FNM this evening so for the record to build to the older version:

Mainboard: -2 Garruk, +1 Blessings of Nature, +1 Primordial Hydra

Sideboard: +3 Deadly Allure, -1 Vraska the Unseen, -1 Blessing of Nature(to main), -1 Primordial Hydra (to main).

Without further addo:

*Results: 1-1-1, 2-0, 2-0, 0-2***

*Round 1: 1-1-1***

This deck was build around very expensive cards. He had 3-4 Jace, Architect of Thought and 3-4 Tamiyo, the Moon Sage. He used Jace to basically find Terminus's, Detention Spheres, and Supreme Verdicts while he searched for tamiyo. Then he would attempt to get her emblem with a Rewind in his hand. Infinite rewind, tap 4 mana, counter spell, untap the mana. Goes to graveyard then back to his hand. Eventually his strategy lets him draw a Rakdos's Return and then use it every turn.

Match 1: LOSS
I lost to him because I did not fully understand Tamiyo, rewind, and their significance going in. Then I got flustered when he had infinite rewind (I was able to kill his jace but not his tamiyo). When she got her emblem I panicked and forgot the stack. I kept playing creatures and spells trying to find something that would work. If I had simply played my shaman, then in response to his rewind, played my other stuff he wouldn't have had enough rewind cards, and it would have been frozen on the stack until my stuff was on the field. In my hand I hand I had a corpsejack, a mangler, an increasing savagry, 2 essence harvests, and lots of mana on the field. If I had kept my cool I could have played the mangler then everything else could have probably gotten out. Instead I played them 1 at a time and the match took forever. I eventually surrendered. It eats at me that I could have put a big counter guy out and double nuked him with harvest if i had kept my cool.

Match 2: WIN
I won this one once I knew what he was up to. I sideboarded over some Sheltering Word to take care of some of his control cards and made short work of him before he could get tamiyos emblem. It actually was very close at one point but I managed to pull it through. He used Jace's ult and stole one of my indestructible oozes. I immediately used golgari charm to try and kill it. Then in response to that he used a counterspell of some sort. In response to that I used my SECOND golgari charm - killing the ooze!! haha. I swung and won.

Match 3: TIE
Unfortunately game 1 took forever because the Tamiyo bullshit and we only had 3 minutes to try a 3rd game. We agreed to a tie Honestly i probably should have gone for it, my aggro deck vs a control deck? Probably i at least had a chance of winning fast enough. (5 turn counter). This tie actually cost him his chance to be in the top 4.

*Round 2: 2-0***

This guy was using a vampire black/red deck. He would try and burn me with spells, and ping me for spell damage whenever a spell was cast.

Match 1: WIN
I made quick work on him game 1. I got a shaman turn 1. Turn 2 I nuked him with it. Turn 3 He removed with with Victim of Night. Wasted his destruction on my shaman. Turn 4 I played Corpsejack. WHAT??? NOT ZOMBIE DECK?? He used his Victim of Night already and it was safe. Turn 5 I placed a Hydra with 6 tokens (Tapped 5 mana for it). Then I swung with corpsejack. I murder spelled one of his zombies. Next turn I Miracled AND increasing savagery the hydra and won with trample.

I didn't sideboard because I beat him fast and didn't really see any lurking dangers yet.

Match 2: WIN
This was another quick game. I got out Champion of Lambholt on turn 3 and corpsejack on turn 4. That made lambholt a 3/3. Then I just smashed through with a +2 power from rancor and unblockable. Quick and he didn't see lambholt coming.

*Round 3: 2-0***

This guy had one of the best red/white burn decks I've ever seen. He made it a point to repeatedly hit 2-3 times before I could get anyone out turns 3 and 4. Then He would control my creatures and direct-damage sorcery me.

Match 1: WIN
I don't recall all the specifics but I remember It got very close. He controlled my creatures and kept nuking me. Finally I got someone out for 3 turns. Ooze I think. I used miracle blessing of nature on the third turn with ooze and then essence Harvest to come back from 1 life. It was VERY close till that draw, but I either outright killed him with my big Essence Harvest, or killed him next turn with trample ooze. I forget.

Match 2: WIN
This round was also very close. Same strategy. He kept nuking me and controlling my creatures. He swapped in more control so that I wouldn't get good harvests. BUT I sideboard swapped in 4 Sheltering Word. During the match I kept 2 mana in reserve after Corpsejack was out. I got down to 1 life and right as he thought he killed me I "In response to your attack, sheltering word"-ed. He had too many to block, but I had a really big ooze and a medium sized ooze. The word healed me above 1 and left him tapped out. I swung and finished him off.

*Round 4: 0-2***

This deck completely blindsided me. I had been researching planeswalker cards all week but I must have missed this one... Sorin, Lord of Innistrad. He had a 3 color deck with Black white and ?blue? i think. His strategy basically revolved around getting some white spirit tokens out and populating till Sorin comes out. He has 2-3 in his deck. Sorin creates 1/1 lifelink tokens and can create MULTIPLE instances of his emblem for only -2 each time. This gives all his creature tokens +1 power. His ult can destroy 3 creatures, exile them, and gives him copies of all 3 to control.

Match 1: LOSS
This was an eye-opener for me. The second planeswalker deck of the night, and definitely the one hardest to deal with. I kept reaching over to read Sorin in shock. It was that bad. Hes going to be underplayed until black/white for gatecrash but... damn. Got me convinced to build a black/white deck and to acquire him now before the price goes up. I've already identified his strategy and this game was a confusing blur for me. But here's sort of how my deck did play by play... I got out a shaman quickly. Then I put out champion of lambholt at turn 3. his eyes got wide after he read the card and he was like "damn! that card would be epic with this deck". I got corpsejack out turn 4 and made lambholt a 3/3. Then he slew her with a spell. I got out 2 oozes but it just didn't matter. He kept healing with 4-5 lifelink tokens. An extra one every turn. He eventually took control of my corpsejack and used it to buff up his tokens. I Murdered corpsejack, but it was too late. He finished me off with huge lifelink tokens.

Match 2: LOSS
I remember this match even less. I was pretty bummed! But he got another early Sorin and wrecked me. When I get beaten this bad I take note... I'm going to think about picking up 3 Sorins now before Orzhov Syndicate(Black/White) comes out with gatecrash. I think Black/White is going to be my second Deck since I've started playing again.

Well that's it! Long post sorry for the delay! I made some changes to my deck as reflected above. Hopefully adding garruk to -2 find key cards will help a lot! I'm going to start thinking about cards to take out of my sidedeck for 4 Pithing Needles. 2 for vsing a deck with walkers, 4 for deck that is exclusively walkers. (Tamiyo/Jace deck).

My largest sideboard is probably going to be 4 Hexproof 4 Needles, and I haven't yet begun to think about what comes out for that change. Probably my hydras. They wont keep their counters vs that much control for long.

*Again: For anyone who hasn't been following my deck, clicking the title of the update should bring up old comments. Clicking the title of the top update there should bring up older ones as well.***

+1 if you like it, and please leave me some feedback! I've wanted to add some Arbor Elfs to untap Overgrown Tombfoil and get corpsejack and lambholt out sooner, but I'm not sure if anything can come out for them.

This deck will soon become an Orzhov deck featuring Gravecrawlers, Messengers, Ultimate Price, and whatever GTC decides to give me. Until then I am not updating the deck. But still, stay tuned kiddies.

Can't seem to get the mana right. Also, can't seem to get to the balance of discard and damage.

Oishin, 12 years ago

Well, first FNM with this deck, 4-0 -Played against Golgari Zombies round one. 2-0 Faced no problems. Burned or Killed anything played and prevented him from doing anything else -Played against Junk Exalted in round two. 2-0 again facing no problems. Probably 'cause Tamiyo kept his black sources or Sublime Archangel tapped. -Played against Boros Humans round three. 2-1 with minor problems. Each game he had huge board postion but my deck stalled ever so slightly and was very consistant when it did, that eventually his deck ran out of momentum. -Played against Team America round four. 2-0 Faced no problems. Contol decks don't do well agianst mine. Anything you can do I can do better with this deck. Finished 1st

Just remembered Parallel Lives. Traded out the Growing Ranks for the Lives for quicker token generation. Seems like Lives speeds up the deck more by not allowing opponent to kill token before my next turn to populate.

Streamlining

Choltzy, 12 years ago

Tinker is much better for getting me the artifacts I need than just the additional draw via Font of Mythos. I decided that since I was going to use Tolarian Academy for my primary source of blue mana (and lots of it) and since I had more sacrificing type abilities (Tinker Time Sieve) I would use Perilous Myr as my main source of removal (instead of paying 6 for a colorless Flame Javelin), the only downside to this is that I now need two to take care of that pesky Platinum Angel. I may go up to 4 in the deck. As sad as I was to see them go I removed Dark Depths and Platinum Emperion from the decklist as they were usually just dead cards anytime I would draw them.

considerations

Frozensun07, 12 years ago

I was thinking of perhaps putting in Thought Scour opposed to Think Twice however im not sure what is more beneficial the potential mill of instants and sorceries into the grave for Runechanter's Pike or the flashback of Think Twice

I am also thinking it would be good to either put in a couple Garruk, Primal Hunters or Tamiyo, the Moon Sage, for control or field presence assistance.

FedorakJ, 12 years ago

Changed some of the lands as suggested. (Bye bye Cathedral of War) Also removed the Gilded Lotus in favor of the Chromatic Lantern. I may switch them back though. I've increased the count of Sigard as she is the star of the show, and removed most of my Exalted effects from the main board completely. They were nice but they made the Loner aspect too hard to accomplish I felt. The Sideboard now is a none issue as the idea before was to be able to remove the loner element and add to the already existing Exalted element.

Thinking -4 Rootbound Crag for +2 Forest +2 Mountain for increased basics to satiate Borborygmos. Thoughts?

sirkeifer, 12 years ago

Alright, After some major playtesting, I've found the best thing to do is protect that Angel and beat the crap out of them! I'd like some more suggestions! Thanks!

Codeboy3423, 12 years ago

Removed Rakdos Shred-Freak and Thunderous Wrath from the deck and added Desecration Demon and Thundermaw Hellkite to the Main Board. Felt Like I didn't have enough heavy hitters by mid/end game. Added 2 Pillar of Flame to the Sideboard

Sideboarded Oblivion Ring and 2 cloudshifts, threw in 4 rancors. Switched borderland ranger for Precinct Captain, for a little more aggro/chump blockers. Gonna try this out and see how it fairs.

Another Change

Aikola, 12 years ago

Ive dropped the number of Thraben Doomsayer as I feel the best use for him is in the late game and I would probably have drawn one should I need one by then so ive put it down to x3 to make way for another Silverblade Paladin as I feel he would be used much to much better effect at any point in the game. I also added Bonds of Faith in replace of Fog so ive still got the ability to disable larger creatures but also pump my own if im in a good position. Im hoping to make it to a tournament sometime soon and try this out for real, does anyone have any other suggestions beforehand?

Played against Vampire deck, successfully mill the opponent deck until finish for the 1st round only. The 2nd and 3rd game can't manage to finish it because of loads of creatures. So I think i would -2 Mind Sculpt and +2 Mutilate to remove creatures.

BossLeiser, 12 years ago

I only need 6 more cards to complete the deck, and then I can cut, and then do basic land calcs.
