Mortlocke on Atraxa, infectious scream (Need help)

I do have some ideas in mind when it comes to closing out a game with Poison counters. But you don't have to make it through a couple times - all it takes is once and it's the beginning of the end. Some traditional combo pieces would be:

And other spells of that ilk. Another synergy are +1/+1 counters. Forgotten Ancient, Hardened Scales, Branching Evolution, Ozolith, the Shattered Spire and The Ozolith are real powerhouses if you wish to go that route. This synergy does telegraph your moves more and you'd be less explosive.

But what to do when the table goes against you? I recommend stax. Tying up the resources of the table, forcing slower and less impactful turns on your opponents while the clock continues ticking. Cards like Astral Cornucopia and Everflowing Chalice help break parity as you will likely have access to more mana than your opponents while they're being held back. Some oldies but goldies would be:

  • Winter Orb
  • Static Orb
  • Ensnaring Bridge (This has good synergy well with the aforementioned pump spells as you can still attack with low power infect creatures)
  • Tangle Wire (A personal Fave as you can proliferate these counters)
  • Parallax Wave (A personal Fave as you can proliferate these counters)
  • Parallax Tide (A personal Fave as you can proliferate these counters)

Playing pretty much any of these cards will likely earn you some ire - but the idea is to only play these when you have poison counters on your opponents and you can reliably proliferate them at least once or twice a turn. The idea is that you've already got your opponents where you want them, all you'd need to do is simply wait while the Poison counters end them.

I recommend using Worthy Knight to combo with Elspeth in this deck. Werefox Bodyguard is also a must-have due to it being potentially another form of removal to have access to. I like seeing Get Lost in White decks recently, by the way.

41 lands is way too many. You probably don't need 2 of every basic land type but I would recommend some instants. Even just a Teferi's Protection or a Counterspell to keep your board state around for a turn cycle could do wonders for a deck like this.

You could try the old deck thinning Flagstones of Trokair trick. Drop 4x Plains and run the full playset, grabbing the Plains you need (works on Snow-Covered Plains too) and increasing the odds of drawing into something better next. It’s kind of pricey, and that’s all it accomplishes, but it’s one of those little adjustments that can increase performance.

The Heritic

Creature - Vedalken Berseker

At the beginning of combat on your turn, put a +1 +1 counter on this creature.

: This creature gains +X +X and Trample until end of turn. X equals the number of cards in any players hand, whoever has the most. Then if that player is you, create an X/X token that is a copy of this creature, where X is its power.

This looks nutty and fun to play

that being said I think Words of Worship, Honor the Fallen, Y'shtola Rhul, Ruin Crab, Swiftfoot Boots could be cut in favor of some more raw lifegain. You already have a ton of protection and counters so I'm not worries about losing boots. I would consider cards like Drogskol Reaver, Rhox Faithmender, Suture Priest, The Wind Crystal, and a few more lands. Maze of Ith doesnt count so you are really only running 33 which is way too lean

overall super cool deck tho

Removed Cabal Coffers, Open the Graves, and Eliminate The competition because they just didnt generate any value in the deck. In their place I added a planeswalker to help generate buffable tokens and utility creatures to help card draw that is needed.

No, it doesn't go infinite. The reason is in the rules for how to handle damage prevention/redirection effects and replacement effects. Prevention, redirection and replacement effects modify the result of an event as it happens, and any such effect that could apply to an event can only be applied to that event once. Shock will only get its damage increased one time, even if it gets bounced around a bunch of times.

In the example of Shock, Warrior en-Kor and Furnace of Rath: You cast Shock targeting the Warrior. You respond by activating the Warrior's ability some number of times, let's say 4 (note the Warrior was printed at a time when some rules and text templates worked differently - the current Oracle text reads ": The next 1 damage that would be dealt to Warrior en-Kor this turn is dealt to target creature you control instead"). Shock starts resolving, and let's say you want to apply Furnace's replacement effect before the Warrior's redirection effect (since you control the object that would be affected by the event, you decide what to apply first). Now the event is that Shock is going to deal 4 damage to Warrior. Warrior's redirection effect is applied and now the event is that Shock is dealing its 4 damage somewhere else. The Furnace effect won't be applied again after this point, even if you sent the damage towards another Warrior and activated them a bunch of times to bounce the damage back and forth.

Appologies. Needed an example and thought Torbran sufficed. Jaya, Venerated Firemage or Furnace of Rath can replace him :)

Maybe read Torbran again. Torbran says this:

If a red source you control would deal damage to an opponent or a permanent an opponent controls, it deals that much damage plus 2 instead.

Torbran doesn't increase the damage dealt to creatures you control yourself.

I couldn't actually find an answer regarding e.g. Furnace of Rath with Warrior en-Kor, but I think you could actually infinitely double your damage. Maybe someone else can confirm or deny?

Llanowar Paladin

Creature - Elf Knight

Elves you control have vigilance.

Mana produced by creatures you control doesn't empty from your mana pool as steps and phases end.

When this creature dies, you may pay . If you do, you draw two cards and gain X life.

If you use a Shock on Warrior en-Kor and you have Torbran, Thane of Red Fell on the battlefield, can you then redirect the damage from Warrior en-Kor to itself and get another+2 on the damage? If not, could you do so with 2 Warrior en-Kor on the battlefield. Do you need to change Warrior en-Kors colour?

That challenge sat for too long, so I'm not going to extend it. Unless, of course, you feel like you want to.

Either repeat the challenge, or make a mono-green, nonlegendary knight.

I would be really temped to build this deck to accommodate extra combat steps with Akki Battle Squad, or like Combat Celebrant, Scourge of the Throne, Port Razer, or Bloodthirster paired with an untapper, preferably Amulet of Vigor. Breath of Fury plus any evasive creature in this deck goes absolutely crazy.

Altar of the Brood, Traveling Chocobo

Yes, that works. The Chocobo's effect cares about whether a land or bird entering caused an ability to trigger. It doesn't require the ability to be specifically written to trigger from lands. With the Chocobo on the battlefield, the Altar will an extra trigger from each land that enters, an extra trigger from each bird that enters, and no extra triggers from any non-land, non-bird (if the permanent is somehow both a bird and a land, there will just be one extra trigger).

Rhadamanthus on Why Not Simply Use a …

They do use smaller fonts for cards with more text. Compare Teferi, Master of Time and Balamb T-Rexaur. There's just a minimum font size they're willing to use, meaning any text that wouldn't fit at that minimum font size is a no-go. Something like Takklemaggot might not be able to be printed anymore under the current font minimums and current rules templating conventions.

Mortlocke,

In regards of manabase, I do have some shock lands/duals on my hand. The rule of proxies in my group is basically : if you own it, proxy it.

My group usually play bracket 3 and sometimes a low 4 and running not enough removal/counters. I do not mind spending, but i also don't want to make it a 5k deck.

Concerning the infinite combo with the poison/infect, my view on poison damage is pretty much like ''commander damage'', it's just another way to win but you gotta make it through a couple of times and not just get an infinite combo piece and it's done no matter what. Do you care showing me some combo you have in mind, i just might misunderstand what you're explaining. The reason i do not want to use such combo as Demonic Consultation + Thassa's Oracle is that we do not play that strong of decks in my pool and they don't enjoy it either. My pool doesn't run enough removal/counter to have these kind of strong game ender combo
