Updated Decklist —Aug. 2, 2019

If you are already familiar with the deck, and don’t want to read the new and improved primer (what I had before wasn’t really a primer), here are the basic changes.

Added Soul-Scar Mage in the place of Elusive Spellfist, since it allows for a T2 kill just like swiftspear.

Realized that with Soul-Scar Mage replacing Elusive Spellfist, the only blue card in the deck was Slip Through Space. Cutting blue has been absolutely amazing for consistency. Before you had to switch from using your lands for Izzet colors to set up your creatures to using them for jund colors, which was really hard. Aphotic Wisps has taken its place, since it is the most similar card I could find. So this is now officially a three color deck (ignore apostle’s blessing).

Added Scale Up which absolutely rigged

Saw that I was playing 19 lands for some reason and cut one. I might cut another. I also changed up the landbase, since mana confluence grew by ten dollars in price

Despite manamorphose being ~20 dollars rn, it is too good to cut, and the deck it still under 300, so I think it’s fine. If you want a budget-er deck just play two more Gut Shot and two more Temur Battle Rage, or if you want you can add in something like Opt or Serum Visions.

Well the first turn kill is a bit unlikely :D. I would not split the swamps and mountains 9:9, i think 12:6 suits it better.

You should call this deck "Weird Infect"!

This deck is brutal though. Very solid, very consistent turn 3-4 win. Sometimes even turn 2.

I'm a pretty big fan of Temur Battle Rage. Worth noting that the kiln gets buff before the rage resolves so it will see the kiln as a 4 power creature. doublestrike and trample is a pretty good way to get through blockers.

Cheap way to play in modern, great deck!

I'm not 100% sure but I'm pretty sure you could replace some of your lands with more pump spells, I understand you want a lot of mana but I think 26 is a bit much

-1 Funeral Charm +1 Phyresis (You really need the infect and now you have 4x mutagenic)

Nice deck

Distortion Strike instead of aphotic perhaps?

i like running protection in the form of Apostle's Blessing, since it doubles up as a spell to make something unblockable. i'd make the following edits:

-1x Funeral Charm-2x Pyretic Ritual (you don't want to make triple red in a 3 color deck)-1x Swamp-2x Assault Strobe

+3x Apostle's Blessing+2x Temur Battle Rage+1x Mutagenic Growth

this should make the deck more consistent! obviously improving the mana base with fetches and shocks (or painlands if on budget) would be ideal, but that can come later. good luck!

One more thing - Charmbreaker Devils seems a bit too expensive for this deck - I'd replace them with maybe some removal or counterspells. Vapor Snag and Stubborn Denial are both good options. Note that if you use Stubborn Denial with a Kiln Fiend out, it will trigger the fiend's ability first, so it will always be a hard counter.

How about either Larger Than Life or Predator's Strike for the buff and trample to take care of chump blockers?

JKRice says... #14

Those spells are a bit high cost for this deck, but I will sideboard Larger Than Life against a mass blocker deck. Thank you!

I love the idea of this deck, +1 from me, but your manabase needs work, here are my thoughts on it. You need fewer lands, and more 5-color lands, like City of Brass, Mana Confluence and Reflecting Pool, as a four color deck is normally quite prone to mana screw, and you could probably take out the fetches, they are really only really good if you have shock lands or something of that sort. Here is the mana base I would use:4x City of Brass4x Mana Confluence2x Reflecting Pool1x Forest1x Island1x Plains1x Swamp3x Gemstone CavernsThis also will bring the overall cost of the deck down, as these are much more cheap than your current fetches fastlands. also, the basics are in there in case of Blood Moon. The reason I think that you don't need many lands is that your average cmc is quite low, so you actually need very few lands. Again though, great deck overall.

interesting but I don't think you need 24 lands. you want to win on t3 and you want to consistently draw meat not veggies. I will fix your mana base to make this deck way more consistent.

Nice deck, but you might want to bring your deck to 60 cards instead of 68, and you can only have 15 cards in sideboard. Still, great concept and love the turn 1 win. +1

May 4, 2017 3:21 p.m.

Gut shot should probably be here. Also, 23 lands seems like a bit much for a deck this fast.

May 4, 2017 6:37 p.m.

JKRice says... #21

I've tryed adding in gut shot before, and it hasn't worked very well, but thanks anyway. Also, how do you think I should change my land base?

May 4, 2017 6:41 p.m.

Felixlives says... #22

cut the deck down to 60 cards main board. run 8-9 fetch lands add 4-5 shocks. you could add Death's Shadow and cut elusive spellfist.. typical infect runs 12-14 creatures main board only 8 have infect the other 4-6 are spellskite and a set of noble hierarch. you could run a set of inkmoth nexus because they are insane good for infect but with your colors it would be hard to cut color production down. still I think inkmoth nexus would be worth a spot.

JKRice says... #23

Thank you for the suggestions. If I eventually get all the cards you are recommending, I will put them in. However, those cards would raise the price of the deck by a **** ton. A playset of noble heirarchs is worth about the same amount as the deck is currently worth. I will consider the death's shadows though, as deaths shadow aggrieved is one of the best decks in modern.

JKRice,
If you're still looking for help protecting your Creatures, I'd recommend ...

  • Vines of Vastwood for sure. It's got Kicker of course, but even its generic ability is better than Hexproof, since you can also target an opponent's creatures ... and then they can't cast pump spells on their own dudes, or Equip them, or use them to Crew.
  • Spellskite is great too, though they're super-pricey.
  • Apostle's Blessing, as VraskaTheCursed already mentioned. Though it's terrible against Eldrazi :-(

Draw well!

Thank you. Help is always welcome, and i need as much as I can get. I originally had Spellskite in this deck, but as you said, it's a little pricey. I also originally used Apostle's Blessing, but I found that protection from one color isn't quite enough. I Originally thought that Vines of Vastwood wasn't quite good enough, because I need two green mana to buff my creature a lot, but I hadn't realized that I could use it on an opponent's creatures. Thank you clayperce!
