Introducing Change Logs —Oct. 24, 2016

With last weekend matches, I've made some small changes in pretty much all my decks.

I'm now using a change log deep down in the description to keep track of what changes I make in the decks and what are the reasons behind those choices.

From October 24th forward, every change in the deck will be listed separately down in the description.

Every suggestion is still accounted for and actually the 2 main changes made this time were fruit of your help! So thank you very much and keep them coming!

Great budget build! I'd want to give those 5/5s Haste and would recommend Ogre Battledriver on the budget end and In the Web of War for a little more $, but still relatively inexpensive.

Great list. Great description. And you are spot on saying that anyone can run an Omnath deck. It is easy to pilot yet complex. Play, Ramp, Drop creature after creature and either smash face or burn the opponent down. Good job.

Now a couple suggestions. I see them in the maybe board and I feel they are an auto include. Tireless Tracker is AMAZING!! Landfall triggers draw while making him bigger. Parallel Lives, why not drop 2 5/5's or more every turn? Lastly, Skyshroud Claim. Searches for ANY 2 forests, and they come in standing up. Instant playable. And also a +1. Nice deck!

@BerserkWin,

I've considered that and even had a Fires of Yavimaya on my original build, but ended up cutting it since most times I pilot the deck very peacefully lol

Sometimes Omnath just wants to chill with his friends, and not make enemies. If you don't make enemies by attacking, the table will worry about other players, and let you be. By the time they notice you're becoming dangerous, you are already beyond their grasp. Since I'm not always attacking I ended up cutting the Haste effects, but if I end up using this deck often at my LGS, I'll definitely have those options in mind for a possible sideboard.

@DasTree

Thanks! It's hard to explain most decks in words, footage of the deck doing its thing is much more meaningful, but I do my best, and Omnath helps since it's pretty much straightforward of a deck!

Yes, Tireless Tracker will be in there! I know it's amazing, I've tried it out, but since I only had one playset and I was playing BG Delirium in old standard, I was using mine. Now I'm still deciding what to build for Kaladesh Standard and as soon as my Trackers aren't needed anymore, one will be in here. (I don't feel like buying any more since their a bit to pricy for what they are and their value won't hold after rotation).Parallel Lives and Skyshroud Claim are among the top priorities for the next few updates in the deck. Since I've been lending Omnath for most of my last EDH games, I've been directing my investment to decks I'm currently playing more often ;)The same with Nissa, Vital Force. I'll open my Kaladesh booster box this week and if I happen to open some, she's coming right in. If I don't well, that's on the priorities for future upgrades.

I've tested with Second Harvest instead of Parallel Lives or Doubling Season but needless to say, most times it was dead in my hand or I had better plays available. So definitely, Parallel Lives will be in this deck sooner or later!

Thank you both so very much for your comments and appreciation!

Thanks for the kind words. This general is so good. The decks that go with him are amazing. And don't fall to very many other decks, especially in groups of 4 or more. Even 1v1 it holds it's own. Been putting a smack down on Rhys the Redeemed which is a very fast deck.

One last thought... trample. be nice to get those 5/5 over the hill before they die. So what about Nylea, God of the Hunt?

GS10 says... #5

Definitely considered Nylea for the deck and it will probably replace Overwhelming Stampede in time.

It's simply one of those accessibility-based choices. I had the Overwhelming Stampede in my binder, not Nylea, God of the Hunt, so I went with the first. They're not quite the same, but I favour Nylea's durability against the suprise effect of the stampede.

All you need is an Amulet of Vigor for your Perilous Forays and your set! I also like the idea of board wipes. It is quite easy to rebuild and you also deal massive amounts of damage. I think I'll incorporate that into my deck as well!

+1 for sure. Go Omnath!

@lucal13,

I already run Perilous Forays. I never considered Amulet of Vigor since my regular playgroup is pretty casual and there are no game locks nor early infinite combos winning games out of nowhere, so usually tapped duals aren't too bad. This being said, that's obviously one card that would improve the overall value of the deck so, one to consider in the future. Thanks!

Since you mentioned people stealing Omnath I'm just going to throw some suggestions in regarding that. The least desirable way to deal with it is Song of the Dryads as it makes it difficult to get him back unless you run some land destruction. It does however make it nearly impossible for people to use him to their advantage. Archetype of Endurance or Asceticism will render targeted theft impossible. You can do complicated stuff where you run a sac outlet and a few targeted theft cards to take him back and sac him. That's also a fun way to get rid of other commanders when you have red. There are a number of steal one creature or steal a lot of creatures cards and all you need is Ashnod's Altar or something. Brand is a one drop instant that is extremely powerful in commander and comes with cycling. Really can't complain about that. Custody Battle is something you can pop on Omnath and do shenanigans with Titania. If someone steals him they're stuck sacrificing lands and generally they aren't going to be a position where they can afford to do so or gain anything from it. Berserk is a expensive so if you don't own one it's probably not an option and they have to attack with Omnath for it to be useful but again it gets him back in your command zone. Most likely they won't attack you until they destroy everyone else so you get the added bonus of Omnath hitting someone else for a lot of commander damage. Grab the Reins is a super awesome card for dealing with any stompy creature or annoying commander and will get Omnath in your command zone for you. Gruul Charm has a ton of utility for you.

Anyway I could go on forever. My only other suggestions for cards to consider are Freyalise... not for the ramp but for the removal. And I almost forgot Praetor's Counsel. If you decide to start sacrificing lands that card is crucial.

Praetor's Counsel is a cool option, but with Splendid Reclamation already being very situational and doing the same job most of the times, I'm not making the Counsel much of a priority.

I actually never considered Gruul Charm and it is certainly very useful for me! As for the other options they are mostly overadjustments. I've had trouble playing after someone steals my general, but it's very rare in my usual playgroup. Homeward Path is the better option for this effect, and doesn't affect any of the deck playability, but I didn't even get a copy yet. It's really very rare, I've only had that issue with Mizzix of the Izmagnus and sometimes Insurrection, but this last one usually is supposed to win on the spot, so that's nothing I should be playing around.

Thank you very much for your suggestions!

Makes sense, I was going to suggest maybe playing Insurrection as the "Don't steal my general and btw I win" card but I just couldn't remember the name. As for Praetor's Counsel and Splendid Reclamation they're definitely situational. However if you build a land sacrifice engine to use Titania regularly as well then I would run it. And if you do that I'm really curious how this deck would run. Bend or Break and Wildfire would be cute in something like that and your elementals would survive the latter. Obviously those are pretty harsh cards to play so it depends on your meta.

GS10 says... #11

It will probably be more competitive that way, yes, but I made the deck for fun and on a very small budget at the time, so I have been upgrading it here and there with better more expensive cards, but I didn't took a turn to the land destruction theme yet, nor I know if I will.

Mostly we play for fun and Omnath is surely my coolest and fun deck to play (you can do pretty much whatever you want, blow up stuff, blow up yourself and even lose the game and still be happy with it because it makes brilliant out of nowhere plays) and that would make me play a deck pointed towards LD, which is the least fun thing you can do to an opponent. You might be having fun but other people are hating on you in the meantime lol

More than budget issues probably that is the main reason I didn't try it out yet. I'm considering Jokulhaups for my Marchesa deck and it will probably be a Insurrection-like instant game winner, but I'm a bit too unsure about it since it destroys lands... The game might end there, but no one likes that in a fun environment, and I dislike playing EDH in competitive environments.

Yes, this makes cards like Praetor's Counsel and Splendid Reclamation very situational and Titania less impactful, but so far, the decks in our playgroup are so well balanced and this deck fits in so nicely being so fun to play that I'm not too fond of making a change of course with the deck. Yes, the way to a strong competitive Omnath build is probably through land destruction/land sacrifice, but even so, I don't think this is the deck I want to play competitively, with so many decks winning turn 3 to 5 or locking the table before turn 7. It's extremely hard (if possible at all) to compete with that with Omnath.

gonki says... #12

Yeah, going the LD route is something to do when people bring the hate before you do. I have an Omnath sitting in my binder and actually a lot of these cards so I might give your build a try. I mentioned the shop I played at in our Anafenza discussion so probably not possible to play this without making it more degenerate aka adding LD. My current tribal decks for fun are Zombies and Vampires tribal in Dimir and Rakdos respectively. Haven't put the lists up yet though.

GS10 says... #13

I've been wanting to build a zombie deck for ages now, but I always end up moving the other way. I do have Sidisi, Brood Tyrant and Gisa and Geralf in my binder, staring at me everytime I open it but then I think I already play Meren, I play Marchesa, I have that Mirko Vosk/Lazav deck that is much more underpowered but still plays with graveyards and zombies, I'm thinking of an Alesha deck too, so, another deck so synergistic with the graveyard always seems excessive. That's why lately I've been focusing more on Brago, King Eternal and Narset, Enlightened Master, as well as this one to try and diversify the decks I play.

As for vampires, I have the latest Olivia, but she's not that good of a general, so I ended up using her into my Marchesa deck. I might use some of the cards I've been cutting from Meren to find a build to use Gonti, Lord of Luxury, and that will probably be a mono black deck with some vampire subtheme. But then again, graveyard shenanigans lol

So for now, my one tribal deck is the unlikely Elemental deck lol (even though Brago, King Eternal has a bit of a spirit tribal behind it, cards like Drogskol Captain and Rattlechains are probably among the next to be cut, so you can see how much of a SUBtheme that is in the deck lol)

When I put the lists up for those two I'll tag you. They're great kitchen table decks and I think Olivia might work more competitively if I use old Olivia as the general and put new one in the deck.

October 15, 2016 12:21 a.m.

GS10 says... #15

Yeah, that's definitely the way I'd take with it. The new one is great with Madness, and great if you get the guy who gives madness to all your vampires, but as a general herself without that dude she's a bit lacking. The original Olivia Voldaren though, is perfect by herself.

I'll wait for that @gonki ;)

Woah, i like how you organised the list, the description and that you made this deck really budget but still kind of competitive.

Good job! :D +1 given

Thanks for the kind words and support markooosrbija ;)

I've just realized we're playing two of the same generals! I'll also check your Brago deck and leave a comment! ;)
