Ayula's Influence
+
Gift of Estates
+
Knight of the Reliquary
, an unusual prototype for the Johnny in you.
This deck is a lot of fun to play, namely because there is so much variety in the interactions between cards, creating numerous unique combos that are actually pretty powerful. For example: with a
Plains
, a
Weathered Wayfarer
, and an
Ayula's Influence
out, we can tutor a
Selesnya Sanctuary
which we use to bounce the
Plains
we tapped to activate
Weathered Wayfarer
. We then discard the
Plains
, creating a 2/2 Bear Token. So we get a 2/2 bear, increase the next turn's mana-base, and ensure we can activate
Weathered Wayfarer
again on our next turn. This trick is especially fun because
Selesnya Sanctuary
is usually among the worst lands, but here, it's one of the best lands in the deck. And to make things funnier, because
Greenseeker
can only get us basic lands, when we use
Weathered Wayfarer
to tutor lands we plan on discarding, the best target is
Temple Garden
!
Weathered Wayfarer
is essential to this deck. The more we can play, the more lands we can discard into 2/2 Bear Tokens each turn. Additionally,
Weathered Wayfarer
in an opening hand makes the deck much more flexible during those vital first few turns - Fewer lands are needed in the opening hand, we can mana-fix for
Ayula's Influence
, we can tutor lands to discard, and we can tutor utility lands like
Hall of Heliod's Generosity
,
Oran-Rief, the Vastwood
or even
Lotus Field
. And to make things even better,
Path to Exile
combos very nicely with
Weathered Wayfarer
, too!
Like
Weathered Wayfarer
,
Gift of Estates
has a land conditional in it's casting cost. Typically, this means that it's a dead card too often to be useful to anyone. But here, we're using it to discard lands to make more 2/2 Bear Tokens. While paying GGG to cast
Ayula's Influence
and 1W to cast
Gift of Estates
to get 3 Plains all to make 3x 2/2 Bear Tokens might not sound like a great deal, it gets better pretty quickly. With 4x
Gift of Estates
and 4x
Life from the Loam
, we're going to repeat this deal over and over and over, generating lots and lots of 2/2 Bear Tokens. If we manage to cast 3x
Gift of Estates
or
Life from the Loam
, we'll have paid 1 mana for each 2/2 Bear Token.
All these combos hinge on essentially cycling lands like crazy, and pretty soon, our graveyard starts getting pretty thick. Just when opponents think it's lots of 2/2 Bear Tokens they have to deal with, we play
Knight of the Reliquary
, which will often enter as a 6/6 or more because of all the lands we've already discarded.
There a lots of other funny ways these cards interact - some more obvious than others. Discovering all these clever combos makes the deck resilient, dynamic, and interactive. It's not just studying the right plays of a Tier 1 trending archetype. It's an exploration into the more peculiar corners of the magic expanse.
Why is
Greenseeker
in the deck? Since we only need 1x
Ayula's Influence
, subsequent copies are usually dead cards.
Greenseeker
turn's those dead cards into 2/2 Bear Tokens and while also pumping
Knight of the Reliquary
.
Why is
Reliquary Tower
included? Because the
Knight of the Reliquary
needs a place to live! No, jk, that's not why. It's because sometimes we can get a little mana-screwed and we don't want to discard essential spells. We can cast a
Gift of Estates
to use mana we'd have otherwise wasted, so we can make a spate of 2/2 Bear Tokens later.
