how does Menace interact with double strike?

Asked by GolgariGrim 4 years ago

Me and my friend were playing a game and I had Greven, Predator Captain on my side of the field, I gave it double strike with Berserkers onslaught and attacked. My friend blocked with two creatures, one of which died during the Firststrike combat step. Since Menace requires two creatures to be blocking would the second attack go through now that one of the creatures is dead, or would that creature still be considered a blocker for the second attack?

Menace only cares about the declaration of blockers. As long as two or more blockers were declared it doesn't matter if one of the creatures dies, is returned to hand, or flickered. As long as the declaration of blockers was legal the creature is still a blocked creature and any creatures declared as blocking it that didn't change zones are still blocking it. It is also worth noting that if all creatures blocking a creature are removed from combat that creature is still considered blocked and deals no damage to the defending player unless it has trample.

This is also why Trap Runner or even Flash Foliage can still stop Greven! Menace means it takes two blockers for the opponent to declare "I block him" the old-fashioned way, but as soon as that point has successfully passed, he is considered blocked from that point on. Thus, anything that circumvents the usual Declare Blockers step will work just fine.
