What to replace hinder and spell crumple?
Commander (EDH) forum

With the no tuck rule now implemented, what should I replace these two counter spells with? Brings a tear to my eye to have to replace these counter spells but they just don't bring value now that they give the opponent a choice (which will 99.99% always be back in the command zone)
I was thinking Dissolve and maybe Mystic Genesis ? It's for a prime speaker edh deck.

Sounds good :-) I haven't updated my deck in awhile and some changes have been made. But overall it is the same. Green blue good stuff

I think that your two suggestions are probably the most viable. An argument could be made for Dissipate as well.

Yeah I thought about that. The exile effect is very enticing and relevant in edh.

I like Dissipate a lot and will alway support running it.

Are you only running them for dealing with commanders? There are no other cards you encounter ever that you'd not want in the graveyard?

Dissipate is just better at keeping noncommmander things away from a graveyard. Spell Crumple might be worth running with enough tutors or shuffle effects to make it able to be drawn into more than once, though it wouldn't work against strategies with excess tutors.

I once Spell Crumple'd a Gravecrawler. One of the best decisions ever... :)

I was actually just about to ask this... fuck this new rule. I guess I'll try Dispel now, and maybe Darksteel Mutation is a more legitimate card now. I already run a ton of other counterspells so there's not many left to choose from. Disdainful Stroke didn't really impress me but it may be all I have left to try.

Disdainful Stroke is very good. it stops most of the things you want to stop in commander, kind of weak if you're trying to stop spot removal and doesn't do well against many other counterspells, but it does stop threats.
also they are still very valid card choices, they just don't permanently stop commanders.

Dissipate belongs in every deck that can run blue. It is really important to stop ETB triggers and infinite combos that are reanimatable. Other than that, at a reasonable price there are:
- Foil
- Faerie Trickery
- Spelljack
- Syncopate
- Logic Knot
- Dismiss
- Exclude
- Ojutai's Command
- Overwhelming Intellect
- Brine Shaman
- Essence Backlash
- Soul Manipulation (one of my favorites)
- Soulsworn Jury
- Silumgar's Command
- Mystic Snake
- Draining Whelk
- Counterflux
- Counterlash
- Deprive
- Discombobulate
- Dismal Failure
- Dromar's Charm
- Familiar's Ruse
- Forbid
- Fuel for the Cause
- Last Word
- Lay Bare
- Plasm Capture
- Psychic Strike
- Render Silent
- Suffocating Blast
- Undermine
...and on the pricer side you have:
- Cryptic Command
- Remand
- Voidslime
- Glen Elendra Archmage
- Ertai, Wizard Adept
- Pact of Negation
- and of course, Mana Drain & Force of Will
A lot of these are my favorites (and favorites of my playgroup) but I will give credit where it is due: http://www.metamox.com/guide-counters.php

Forbid is really, really good, so I recommend that one. With draw X mechanics it's nasty.
Dissipate is also great, and I agree with the consensus on that one.
Why has no one mentioned Rewind?
Honestly though, Spell Crumple and Hinder are just good enough to make the cut on their own right, even if they don't effect commanders anymore...

I think Forbid is def going to be one of them. And probably Dissipate.
Thanks guys so much for the help, awesome suggestions :-)

suneater never play any 4-mana counterspell unless it does something really good. Dismiss? Yes. Essence Backlash? No.

I run Mystic Genesis in U/G, I ramp enough that I can afford higher-price counterspells for benefit. same with Plasm Capture, but I would say that does something really good.

I'll comment on your deck in a minute. :)
