Looking for a fun commander (budget)

Commander Deck Help forum

Hey guys!! I am looking for a commander that would just be really fun to play. Maybe a group hug deck that isn't Phelddagrif. Any suggestions?

People don't like group hug decks usually, some even hate them more than control/combo because they make the game too chaotic. Maybe use a commander like Shattergang Brothers. I like to play with him :)

I'm currently having a ton of fun with Nahiri, the Lithomancer at Nahiri, the Lithomancer: Armed & Dangerous (MODO). Who knew mono-white could be so much fun?!

@ M a g i c a l H a c k e r: I have yet to update my Nahiri Deck, but yes it is fun. But I was defeated last time I played to Bribery. Elesh Norn is no fun when your oppoent gets control of it.

Will have to look at you deck list later to see if I can get some more Ideas. I have aquired some cards for it, just not updated my list.

What is your definition of fun? are yo uafter someting combat heavy, or do your prefer combos?

without knowing your playstyle:

Good luck; have fun.

My playstyle would definitely be more combat heavy with kill spells thrown in there. So maybe a red black commander? I was thinking about Exava, Rakdos Blood Witch, or Kaervek the Merciless. I just wouldn't really know how to build them.

I would avoid building red/black if you can help it. it's notoriously one of the hardest colour combinations to get right. You could build Naya (ggreen white red) which is very combat heavy and gives you access to white for some of the best removal in the game. Your otheroption however could be mono-black.

I personally run a mono-balc voltron build based around Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief which as decend draw power, ramp and a crapload of removal. However if you wanted to go wide, you could look into commanders like Ghoulcaller Gisa who can very quickly build you an army. The other benefit of going mono-coloured is that the landbase is going to be much cheaper. In mono-black you're really only splashing cash for cards like Phyrexian Tower or Volrath's Stronghold.

Wort, the Raidmother, she's a lot of fun.

For the ultimate budget commander I suggest Zedruu the Greathearted. Play pillow fort or Voltron with cheap auras.

Another cheap to build commander is Merieke Ri Berit. The strongest way to build her is actually Wizard tribal. Yes I know she's not a wizard herself. It actually stops Shattergang Brothers incredibly well and it's matchups are much less polarized than Azami, Lady of Scrolls. I have seen several builds with Merieke in the last few years but it wasn't until I saw the power of ESPER Wizards that I became a true believer.

Here's a starter list of cheap CMC (and $$$) Wizards to run with Merieke:
Azorius Guildmage
Coffin Queen
Patron Wizard
Lighthouse Chronologist (Go for damaged or heavily played) Magus of the Unseen (Sometimes good sometimes not)
Oracle en-Vec (Much better than he looks. Combos with wizards or spells that tap down their stuff.)
Azami, Lady of Scrolls (Cheap card draw)
Apprentice Necromancer (Bad early good late game.)
Aphetto Grifter (Really means "Tap a wizard other than this one and stall forever")
Aphetto Alchemist (Makes your commander into a kill spell and helps other wizards.)
Captain of the Mists (Combos with Gilded Lotus + Illusionist's Bracers
Musician (Slow but an ok starter Wizard)
Glen Elendra Archmage (Expensive but it's a flying Negate)
Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder (Optional, helps vs things like Dictate of Erebos)
Ertai, the Corrupted (Good with Endrek or enchantments that return to hand after they leave he battlefield, which there are 2-5 of in esper colors for 2-3 mana)
Rayne, Academy Chancellor (AMAZEBALLS!)
Sage of Fables (Slightly less amazeballs)
Juntu Stakes + Meekstone (HA HA you play Wizards!? F.U. then buddy!)
Sigil Tracer
Sower of Temptation (Expensive, will be an upgrade)
Stonybrook Angler (More commander combo stuff)
Supreme Inquisitor (This is very powerfull once your in the mid to late game)
Tolarian Entrancer (Don't laugh, play like this is your win condition, eventually they will have to block it and you profit.)
Voidmage Husher
Wandering Mage (Maybe)
Havengul Lich (Maybe)
Vedalken Mastermind
New Prahv Guildmage
Mistmeadow Witch (Filler)
Venser, Shaper Savant
Magus of the Abyss - If you play Darksteel Plate or later get Avacyn, Angel of Hope or can just make tokens each turn.

So yeah...that's probably more creatures than you know what to do with eh? Esper Wizards 4 life.

Rosheen Meanderer is really fun to play with as it gives you access to a fair amount of removal along with insanely large creatures, my budget list is here X Cost Control in EDH - Rosheen Budget

Hua Tuo, Honored Physician works surprisingly well for mono green beatdown (Mono-Green Advantage - Hua Tuo Recursion)

Thelon of Havenwood is a super fun commander to play, as I have always thought that Saproling/Fungus tribal was real cool (my budget list here Thelon the Felon - Saproling EDH for $40)

Ruhan of the Fomori is a pretty good commander for beatdown, especially if you give it evasion

Shu Yun, Silent Tempest is an awesome commander for jeskai beatdown

Can Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest or Daghatar the Adamant make good commanders? Someone online told me they were meh.

Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest is an amazing "Tempo" commander. Don't think "Tempo" means slow either. Starting T4 you will be swinging in every single turn. Ideally you will have 1x Instant/Sorcery and 1x Counterspell/Protection Spell for him every turn starting T4. Of course you mix in card advantage wherever it's prudent.

His prowess is enough for you to win the game alone. The whole "Double Strike" shouldn't factor into mana calculations until you've got 5-7 lands.

Here's a "group hug" with a deadly reach around. Really, really fun to play and the card draw can get ridiculous.

I've had a lot of fun with Momir Vig, Simic Visionary but he comes with a bad rap. I also threw together a Mistform Ultimus deck that plays a bunch of lords and fun equipments. My latest deck has been Godo, Bandit Warlord using the new Blade of Selves so abuse his etb triggers. Each deck can be built for casual or competitive and can usually be made for about 60$ but all three have the potential to be completely nasty if you slowly invest a bit more cash into them. My momir deck started off as green blue elves and slowly turned into simic goodstuff over time and in each iteration it has only become more efficient and effective.

Sorry for double post but I didn't see that you were interested in group hug. Might I recommend Kami of the Crescent Moon you use cards that make you opponents draw a ton of cards. You of course playing blue will have any means in control necessary to get rid of any threat they may draw into. Naturally they will think your deck to be weak until you drop artifacts that make sure they can't discard their hands. Their cheers of joy soon turn into shrieks of terror as you cast Fascination or the like for 30.

Avacyn, Guardian Angel is a cool political commander, maybe not as great with group hug but the good thing is that it is targeted and usually won't make the game as out of control as Phelddagrif
