A Brand New Look! —Dec. 5, 2018

This site got its much deserved make-over to improve the reader friendliness of the page. Hope you guys like the new fonts, color scheme and all. Don't forget to give me a +1 to support the deck.

Added

  1. Preordain - More deck filtering is always good.

  2. Insidious Dreams - Ability to set up the next few cards on top of the library at Instant speed is powerful and warrants a spot in the deck.

Removed

  1. Worn Powerstone - Kinda slow for this deck where time is of the essence.

  2. Maze of Ith - The original intent was to protect Yennett when she attacks and to protect ourselves from opponents' gigantic creatures. However, during game plays, this card is largely under-utilized because Yennett, equipped with "Flying & Menance", is usually unblockable.

I like the deep dig for Conch Horn; I'm sure I've had some sitting around for almost 25 years.

I know you have the staff to fix deck order, but Mana Severance is also good on it's own and with Goblin Charbelcher. Blatant Thievery ends up being like another Expropriate - massive haymakers. Commander's Sphere has the cantrip for when the mana isn't necessary, or a clutch play. With 1/3 blue cards and the draw the Yennett provides, Commandeer can be a huge play. The top deck manipulation and card draw on opponents turns allows you to miracle Entreat the Angels right before your turn.

With all the timewalks, As Foretold is interesting in a control/geddon style for coming online fast, but at that point, you're so hated, Doomsday might as well go in too.

moysturizer Thanks for your suggestions.

Conch Horn has been a hidden gem, allowing me to return bombs I've drawn to the top of the library. We need more redundancy for Brainstorm type effects in the deck!

Mana Severance + Goblin Charbelcher have been long time friends since the latter was 1st printed. Its a nice alternate Wincon just in case Yennett gets hated out or Proteus Staff fails to do its magic. My meta includes a few friends who're playing Land Destruction cards/decks so I'd have to be extra careful when tossing in Mana Severance as it may well severe my chances of winning too if my lands get destroyed after casting it.

Blatant Thievery is strong when in multiplayer format but its usefulness tappers in 1 v 1. This is the sole reason I've chosen not to include it atm.

Commandeer is an interesting card and I'd like to get my hands on one and try it out in the deck. Thanks for suggesting it!

Someone suggested As Foretold earlier too but I felt it's too slow for my deck's pace. You're right about all the extra turns helping to clock Time Counters though.

How did Entreat the Angels fare in your deck? I'm in 2 minds about this one. While it grants me useful blockers and potential Proteus Staff targets, my deck doesn't quite win on combat damage so the extra Angels ain't synergistic.

Serum Visions and Preordain feel like they have a home here, more deck manipulation is always good

PrideGreen Thanks for the suggestions. These are good cards and fit the theme well too.

I'm unable to throw them in due to space constraints as the deck is already very tight. I did contemplate taking out Crystal Ball for one of these cards but I went with repeatable Scry in the end.

Currently, am running Brainstorm cause it allows me to put the bombs I drew back on top of the library. Ponder has the added benefit of allowing me to shuffle the unwanted cards away to refresh the top of my library.

Let me know if there're cards you think can be taken out to fit these in.

Glad my suggestions are helpful!

I feel like Worn Powerstone is a weak link in your deck since you wanna be as fast as possible, you even said that it isn't as good as the others (I always stand by cantrips over mana rocks personally). Also you could consider removing Condescend for more focused cantriping, but if its for the counterspell I would vote against cutting the card (its not the best counterspell though).

October 6, 2018 3:30 a.m.

Cloudius says... #6

PrideGreen You're right about Worn Powerstone. ETB tapped is its Achilles heel and slows down the tempo of the deck, when we're always striving to cast Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign asap.

To be honest, I've never drawn Condescend in the games I've played. On paper, marrying Counterspell and Scry is awesome and warrants a slot in the deck. There are much stronger "hard counters" out there for sure, so am taking a compromise here to gain the Scry ability. Will probably test it further before deciding whether to axe it.

So for now, I'd try out Preordain over Worn Powerstone. I've ordered an Insidious Dreams and that'll go in once I received it. Then its headache all over again to decide which card to cut. LOL

I always appreciate it when folks take time to go through my Primer, understand the concept and ideas behind the deck, before making suggestions and/or cuts. So kudos to you for doing so! Thanks once again.

Love the deck and the entire concept behind it. Love seeing originality like this. The work you have put into the list and primer is something else. Great job.

KayneMarco thanks for your kind words. It is always a joy to build original and creative decks!

The deck is extremely fun to play and surprisingly consistent. It's taking me quite a while to flesh up the Primer as writing in English is not my forte.

Any suggestions on the deck, the page (reader friendliness, etc) and/or Primer write up are always welcomed. If you built this deck eventually, let me know how it fare in your meta. Cheers!

The only card I can think of at the moment for a creatureless spellslinger deck such as this is Swarm Intelligence. It’s odd so to speak.

Also saw an earlier response of yours further up the thread about Aminatou, the Fateshifter and how you would be unable to protect her. How bout lands that make creature tokens such as Kjeldoran Outpost, Westvale Abbey  Flip, Springjack Pasture and Urza's Factory. Not only would they protect her but they could also be used to protect you until you got your win cons going.

October 10, 2018 11:35 a.m.

sooooo you know that imperial seal has a promo that is like 50 bucks right? instead of cruel tutor.. just get that. Insidious dreams is nice if you are abusing scroll rack and necropotence, and also yawgmoths will. Obviously you you don't discard good cards with necropotence out, hence scroll rack.

KillTheIslandUser Imperial Seal would be perfect but the last I checked, the Judge Promo (I assume this is the "promo" you were referring to), is over 200 USD... gasp

KayneMarco Your suggestion on token producing lands is a pretty interesting one. I've only looked at Manlands to fuel my Proteus Staff but I'd explore what you've suggested.

Going to research on the options I've. Thanks for pointing this one!!

Speaking of lands, check this one out for top decking, Soldevi Excavations.

Probably the coolest and most original deck I have seen in a while on Tappedout. I really want to play test your deck in next month's Commander tournament in my local card shop. But what would you swap out from your deck with the cards from your "too poor to afford list"? Seeing I own all 4 of those cards it would cool to test them out in practice.

I’m so glad someone built a good version of this deck! I’ve been trying to make creatureless yenette combo/spellslinger ever since she was printed, but all my brews suck.

Cloudius says... #17

Kapitein_Koekblik Thanks for the support.

I'm honored someone appreciated my wicked concoction! Yennett is seen as an underdog so this deck can come out of nowhere to win the game, taking your opponents by surprise!

Lucky you for owning all the cards I'd love to add to the deck.

Personally, I'd replace the following 4 cards:

Worn Powerstone

Maze of Ith

Crystal Ball

Condescend

JTMS is a tricky one though cause we only got 1 creature in the deck to defend him against combat damage. Planeswalkers are often targets for removal once they hit the field, especially powerful ones like JTMS. So we may not be able to draw recurring value from him over several turns.

I'm excited to know how the deck will turn out in your local tournament. Keep me posted. Good luck!

JKRice Great minds think alike!

This is my original home brewed deck and I'm loving it alot.

Hope you've as much fun as I do piloting this deck! Cheers.

KayneMarco Soldevi Excavations is an interesting suggestion! I've included it in my Maybeboard. I've only 10 Islands in the deck, so the ETB may be a down side.

October 19, 2018 10:19 p.m.

Hey Claudius, the deck looks solid. When viewing you deck however, due to all the animations and extras you've added to the page, it seems to lag a bit. Maybe you could try to remove some aspects so it would be easier to view. Just a suggestion.

AstralKingKazma Thanks for your compliments and feedback! Am loving it a lot since it's a home brewed deck and is extremely fun to pilot. Give a +1 if you've tested the deck and find it fun too!

Yes the loading may lag slightly, especially if you're viewing from a mobile phone. I'd work on improving the loading time, without compromising the aesthetic customization I've put into the page.

Any feedback and/or suggestions are welcomed so keep them coming. Cheers!

Kapitein_Koekblik How's your deck forming and play testing going in preparation for the tourney?

If the format for your Commander Tournament is 1 v 1, I'd recommend adding Hatred into the deck. It allows you to One-Shot your opponent out of nowhere, especially since Hatred can be cast for free via Yennett's trigger.

October 22, 2018 9:35 a.m.

Cloudius I've been play-testing it a fair bit the last couple of days, I'm thinking of actually cutting Jace, the Mind Sculptor from the deck. He has done nothing for me so far or he get's countered right away "because it's JtMS".

Experimenting with Beacon of Unrest, Hatred and Brilliant Ultimatum as well. Most decks at my local store are really creature heavy or people depend on their graveyards to much. Hence Beacon of Unrest being a good try out, so far it's 50/50 as it's really situational (it's probably not making the cut).

Hatred being a good wincon, has shown that it's not handy to use when you still have 2 opponents left if you knock one out with it, let stand the amount of life you have left at that point.

Brilliant Ultimatum Has shown potential, as I always pick out the opponent at my table with the least knowledge of MTG to make the decision (I know it's awful, but they learn from their mistakes right away). This card is my current spotholder for replacing JtMS

Scroll Rack is the MVP so far for me, great value for 1 mana. The Mana curve with the rocks is just right if you cut Worn Powerstone, earliest I got Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign out was on turn 4 with Swiftfoot Boots.

So far I'm really loving the deck, although at certain times I feel like I could really use some life gain now and again. Going to look into that a little bit the coming days. So far I've won 4 out of 6 matches with it so can't complain. If you have any better suggestions let me know.

October 23, 2018 4:42 a.m.

Cloudius says... #24

Kapitein_Koekblik your assessment is spot on and the same as mine.

I'd take out JTMS and Beacon of Unrest. If you're really keen on Graveyard Recursion due to your creature heavy meta, I'd recommend Rise of the Dark Realms (Why take one when we can take ALL)!

Hatred is only good when you're in a 1 v 1 situation, else it's dangerous and marginal suicidal to use it in multiplayer games. LOL

You may wish to play test Hall of the Bandit Lord and Insidious Dreams too. I've been wanting to test them out but haven't got my hands on these cards. Hall is situational cause the ETB tapped really hurts our tempo. An "end turn" Dreams followed by Brilliant Ultimatum is a good combo though!

Let me know how the testings go. Good times ahead! Cheers.

Cloudius went 3W-1L today. Switched some cards at the last moment after checking out the competition. Out of the 16 people there I noticed that at least 5 played with an alternative wincon deck, so I swapped out Jace for Commandeer and Dimir Machinations for Denying Wind. I know Denying Wind sounds janky but it really did a number on 2 people in those 4 rounds, killing their combo's and removing their wincons. It basically left them with a dead pile of cards and they were sitting ducks from that point onward. Them complaining after that Denying Wind should be banned was icing on the cake. I wouldn't play it other wise to be fair, at a certain point I had it in my starting hand and if I didn't have a Scroll Rack to go with it I would have mulliganed. Won twice with Approach of the Second Sun (feels good man) and once with Misdirection redirecting a 25 mana Fireball that was aimed towards me to another player with low HP and then killing the last guy with commander damage and extra turns galore. The last round was undo-able seeing one guy went infinite with his Narset, Enlightened Master on turn 5 and no one could do anything anymore at that point.

All in all, works great! Still needs some tuning here and there, but it also depends on what people are playing. Was looking into maybe putting Timetwister in their but I get the feeling I give my opponents more answers to the cards I'm going to play.

Will try to update you if I find something out.
