Life Total Control

So long as Modern maintains its unspoken 4-Turn Format lets give Burn a try. The fantasy version of the deck being 40x Lightning Bolt 20x Mountain basically the math works out for a burn deck like that to win consistently will need 4 turns to do so.

Tips:

  • Aim for 10 points of damage in the opening hand. I have the Mindset that draws tend to alternate between land, burn spell, land typically.

  • Creatures like Goblin Guide/Monastery Swiftspear/Eidolon of the Great Revel are the most powerful cards in Burn. In an opening hand sometimes those creatures can do 4-6 points of damage by themselves.

  • Keeping hands with one land: Ask yourself if "If I draw my second land by my second or third turn will I win the game?" paying attention to hands with creatures in them.

  • If the opponent is playing discard spells be as efficient as possible. its better to cast double Lava Spike than a single Skullcrack because you are just leaving behind more cards to be taken from you by Grief/Inquisition of Kozilek.

  • Leyline of Punishment/Skullcrack Make it so damage cant be prevented; this can be relevant for protection when up against Kor Firewalker or The One Ring.

2023 Card Choices I'm not sure about:

Maybe:

This is a general running list of cards that I would consider in various Metas i.e. Emrakul, the Aeons Torn for Mill or Deflecting Palm for Death's shadow or Flames of the Blood Hand for an increasing presence of damage prevention... Oddball cards that generally aren't worth playing but can be worth considering if the occasion/environment calls for it.

Hopes For Modern Horizons 3 in Summer of 2024:

  • Fireblast: The card is an amazing finisher.

  • Price of Progress: This will become a BIG damage spell with how greedy Moderns Mana bases are.

  • Chain Lightning: This is honestly "Meh"... Its basically a sorcery speed Lightning Bolt but I would be happy with getting closer to a 40x Bolt deck list.

  • Sulfuric Vortex: Its comparable to Roiling Vortex Big cumulative damage and stops lifegain without needing to keep mana open.

Updates Add

I picked up my missing Sacred Foundrys and Sideboard cards and decided to make this as "Competitive" as I can. With The One Ring dodging the most recent ban list I am thinking Burn may be in a good position to run at my LGS... I'm experimenting with bringing in Grim Lavamancer to help snipe some pesky creatures like Esper Sentinel/Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer/Thalia, Guardian of Thraben.
