Sideboard

BUG midrange with an emphasis on planeswalkers to win the game.

OBJECTIVE OF THIS DECK:

  • WIN CONS = Land a hard to deal with creature and attack. OR in a long game ultimate Vraska the Unseen and swing once for game

  • Build up resources early turns (Sylvan Caryatid or Kiora's Follower) while denying my opponent theirs through removal if necessary.

==========CARD CHOICES==========

REMOVAL SUITE:

PLANESWALKERS:

  • Vraska the Unseen = Kills anything other than a land, and in long games can even win me the game (although it is unlikely)

CREATURES:

  • Sylvan Caryatid = allows me to ramp to 4 mana by turn 3 to drop one of my many 4 drops and blocks exceptionally well vs Mutavault or other aggressive early ground creatures

  • Kiora's Follower = An additional "ramper" that can also untap a creature that attacked from my last turn or a Desecration Demon if my opponent tries to tap him down

  • Courser of Kruphix = Best midrange creature around at the moment...good at blocking vs aggro and "drawing" me an extra land each turn

Nightveil Specter = a flyer that allows me to steal resources from my opponent. (Sylvan Caryatid and Mana Confluence can help me cast those cards as well)

  • Reaper of the Wilds = a 4/5 creature that can protect itself from removal if given the chance? Not to mention it has Scry for every time another creature dies? Sign me up!

  • Desecration Demon = I didn't have him in here originally, but against R/G monsters or aggro decks he's awesome. I'll have to find another 4 drop that is as good as him once rotation happens, but for now I'll enjoy the 6/6 menace

  • AEtherling = the star against midrange/control matchups! I consider him a planeswalker in creature form due to his multiple abilities

MISC CARDS:

  • Thoughtseize = Allows me to deal with a card before it becomes a problem

========SIDEBOARD CHOICES========

  • Bile Blight = comes in vs monoblack to help deal with Pack Rat and Mutavault. Also better than Hero's Downfall vs aggro decks as it costs one less mana, and can get me some value at taking out multiple creatures

  • Golgari Charm = useful vs Supreme Verdict or decks running alot of enchantments/enchantment creatures

  • Doom Blade = Comes in to replace main deck removal against nonblack decks

  • Underworld Connections = comes in to help out vs slower decks so that I can keep up with card draw. Kiora's Follower also allows me to use this multiple times per turn :)

  • Lifebane Zombie = with the surge of Gruul (R/G) and "white weenie" / Orzhov decks running around, he's an all star at advancing my board while hindering my opponent's plans. At the very least he allows me to see my opponent's hand and can be unblockable against nonblack decks

  • Vraska the Unseen = comes in when I need extra removal for planeswalkers or other hard to remove permanents

  • Brain Maggot = remove a card from my opponent's hand before it becomes an issue

This is going to sound crazy, but what do you think of adding Mana Confluence so that you can play Ajani, Mentor of Heroes . He would give you some some nice draw for creatures and planeswalkers.

It would be a great addition to be able to use things like Detention Sphere and Supreme Verdict .

I've considered 4 color control/midrange once I get 2-3 of them...but Green will still be at the core for Sylvan Caryatid and my 'walkers

I don't know about Ajani, Mentor of Heroes though as I wouldn't be running that many creatures...still I can give it a shot

I really like this deck, and this is definitely a good color range for me to work off of.

I felt so too. I used to run Grixis but I REALLY need Temple of Epiphany and something else to help it out (like Keranos, God of Storms for a finisher) so I switched from red to green.

Green helps out SOO much with ramping/mana fixing, planeswalkers, removal, etc

I also think that with the new set, Golgari is a lot better than it was before. Vraska, in particular, seems to shine much more with Nyx out.

Oh with Temple of Malady for sure. As soon as I get my playset they're going in here :)
