C17 & Ixalan Update! —Sept. 16, 2017

Lots of news cards out there, but are any of them worthy of Borbor's attention?

Traverse the Outlands - This seems like the slam dunk add from the set, but not so fast... I already don't see the appeal of something like Boundless Realms and this is a more conditional version of the same thing. This deck simply doesn't have room for a 5 mana ramp spell that doesn't assemble one of our combos. Play this if you want, but it's too clunky for me.

Rampaging Ferocidon - I kind of like what's going on here. It comes down early, prevents players from gaining too much life and punishes them as the game goes on. It also shuts down some infinite combos and, generally, is an irritant. Like Harsh Mentor, it probably has a home in some versions of the deck.

Star of Extinction - Well this feels like it belongs here. It's not as efficient as Blasphemous Act or Chain Reaction, but it DOES hit Planeswalkers, blows up a land and does HILARIOUS things if you're running Repercussion.

Vance's Blasting Canyon - Well we'd play the crap out of the backside of this card. A mana sink that let's us pick off value creatures or dome folks every turn would be awesome. The question is do we want the front side of this card and can we flip it easily enough that we get what we want. I dislike that you can't play lands off of it, but I do think it's fairly easy for us to flip. Especially considering how frequently we're looping Life from the Loam. This will require testing.

Growing Rites of Itlimoc  Flip - Well we don't currently play Gaea's Cradle so I don't see any reason to run bad Cradle.

Conquerer's Galleon - You're going to hear this a lot... we'd LOVE to play the back side of this card, but, basically, only 3 creatures (and our commander) can crew this. I think we'd be... ambitious to try it.

Dowsing Dagger  Flip - Guess what? We'd LOVE to play the backside of this, but having to equip and connect with it likely makes it hard for us to play considering our creature count and their size.

Thaumatic Compass  Flip - This might be our flip card winner. Puts lands into hand, flipping this is trivial and we totally could use a Maze of Ith. In fact, I think this card my actually be better here than the Maze is...

I don't think either set is a slam dunk for us, but there are some really interestingly designed cards here. Lots of stuff we COULD play, but nothing that demands we make changes to the deck to accommodate. I'll certainly play around with a few of these and see what happens. What are you gonna test out?

Very cool Borborygmos Enraged deck, man. Was gonna try and suggest a replacement for Hour of Promise since I felt it wasn't very strong at first glance, but I suppose I see what you're going for since it's "land" and not "basic land." Wish I had the funds to put together a deck like this for Bobo.

Was gonna suggest Realm Seekers or Collective Voyage, in case you were interested in my alternatives. Also, have you tried Rites of Flourishing yet? How do you feel about it for this deck?

Thanks for the comments and suggestionsRingoDingo92!

I think Hour of Promise is deceptively powerful in the deck because it fetches any land. When you have the sorts on non-basics we're rocking it's bound to over perform. I've just slotted it in the deck and haven't drawn it yet though. Hoping it does work, but it may actually go back to being Scapeshift as that card does similar things, but scales better as the game goes on.

I've played with Realm Seekers before. It comes down huge and usually eats a removal spell before you can do much tutoring with it. I found it... underwhelming and it was cut for a more consistent threat in Omnath, Locus of Rage.

Collective Voyage I've never played and Rites of Flourishing was in the VERY first version of the deck. Both are too.... group huggy for my tastes. I really like leveraging the fact that I'm ahead of my opponents when it comes to land drops and these get your opponents caught up. I could see both being good, but my local meta is kind of combo-y, so I hate giving that kind of advantage.

Every card you named is playable in the deck, they just don't do quite enough in my build! Good luck with your own build and the deck is certainly playable in a more... budget friendly form.

Ooo, Scapeshift is pretty cool, I think I'd prefer it to Hour of Promise. I guess you'll just have to keep it in the back of your mind, "Would I rather this were Scapeshift right now?" whenever you draw it, then you'll know for sure. Anyway, yeah I think I'd prefer either of those cards to Realm Seekers in that case.

I get the feelings toward Rites of Flourishing, but Collective Voyage isn't necessarily group huggy if you play it right. It could easily play to your advantage if opponents are/are nearly tapped out. But perhaps that's too situational for your taste, which is perfectly understandable.

RingoDingo92 with voyage, everyone gets X lands no matter how much they dump into it... So if I cast it for 5 while they were tapped out, everyone would get 5 lands, not just me. There's no way to cast Collective Voyage where you're not ramping everyone the exact same amount.

Oh shit, you're so right, haha. I interpreted it as however much mana you individually spend is how many lands you get. Good call! Very group huggy after all.

RingoDingo92 Tempt with Discovery is a MUCH better version of the same deal. Everyone gets a land, sure, but I get 3 in that case. It's only been in the deck for 2 games, I've resolved it in both and won both. Hour of Promise does kind of the same thing, but doesn't at all rely on your opponents which is why I think it's going to be good. It'll be an easy cut for Scapeshift if it's not.

The real question is what to cut for Mirage Mirror....

I agree, Tempt with Discovery is much better. What shenanigan ideas do you have for Mirage Mirror here?

RingoDingo92 Mirage Mirror has some obvious synergies with cards already in the deck. Here's a short list of cards I'm looking forward to mirror-ing...

Dark Depths, Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle, Horn of Greed, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Courser of Kruphix, Lotus Cobra, Oracle of Mul Daya, Tireless Tracker, Exploration

Not to mention just copy-ing the best thing my opponents are playing (especially if it draws me cards).

And if there was any doubt. I cast Hour of Promise in both games I played with the deck last night. I won them both fairly easily. I also kept a hand with 6 lands and an Exploration in the first game. I proceeded to draw Azusa and Life from the Loam... It was... not fun for anyone expect me.

Haha, sounds like it's rolling on all cylinders. Yeah copying a lot of those cards would be pretty great. You wouldn't want to copy Azusa, Lost but Seeking and Dark Depths since they'll just blow each other up because they're legendary, right? I'm pretty sure you wouldn't want to with Azusa anyway, but does the Dark Depths copy still get the Marit Lage effect? I'm guessing it does.

It's tough to say what you should remove since the decklist seems pretty tightly planned as is. Might have to go with one of your targeted removal cards, which would suck but I doubt you want to give up a ramp card either.

RingoDingo92 I purposely left off all the other legendary, except Azusa. Yeah, won't be doing that (except in response to a removal spell, in which case it's awesome!). It does work with Dark Depths the same way Thespian's Stage does.

The cut MAY be Expedition Map. With Hour of Promise added, we're not having trouble finding the various non-basics we want and (I think), Promise, Realms Uncharted, Sylvan Scrying, Crop Rotation and Tempt with Discovery is more redundancy than I need in the land tutor department.

RingoDingo92 says... #12

That's what I figured about Dark Depths. Both would go to the graveyard but result in Marit Lage, correct?

I thought about suggesting Expedition Map, but I didn't know if you'd want to take away a one-drop with the curve so three-drop heavy as is. You do have a hell of a lot land tutor, though, no doubt. I'm sure you can do without one.

RingoDingo92 Exactly correct. You get a Marit Lage and lose both. It's better when done with Thespian's Stage since it's easy to get both back in this case, but I like the back-up plan.
