Phyrexian Dragon Engine

Artifact Creature — Phyrexian Dragon

Double strike

When Phyrexian Dragon Engine enters the battlefield from your graveyard, you may discard your hand. If you do, draw three cards.

Unearth (: Return this card form your graveyard to the battlefield. It gains haste. Exile it at the beginning of the next end step or if it would leave the battlefield. Unearth only as a sorcery.)

(Melds with Mishra, Claimed by Gix.)

Mishra, Lost to Phyrexia  Meld  Meld is really funny, but let's be real: You're never getting that out unless you use a tutor. As much as it hurts my Timmy heart Phyrexian Dragon Engine  Meld is just bad outside of the combo and should be cut.

If I have Mishra, Lost to Phyrexia  Meld  Meld and my opponent cast Swords to Plowshares targeting Mishra, do Mishra, Claimed by Gix  Meld and Phyrexian Dragon Engine  Meld both go to exile?

Love to see a higher powered Marchesa out there, your deck seems super tuned!

Read through your primer, I wanted to note that Mirage Mirror is a super strong include and you've convinced me to add it to my Marchesa. The official ruling on Marchesa is that as long as the card is a creature when it leaves the battlefield, it will return to the battlefield as its front side. I considered Mishra, Lost to Phyrexia  Meld  Meld for this reason. Getting Mishra  Meld out, melding with Phyrexian Dragon Engine  Meld, then returning both cards from the grave if the back side dies would be decent. Decided against the include as it's a slow synergy, still powerful though.

Reading through your notable exclusions page, it seems like you have half my decklist in there... Ouch. Was going to ask for tips but your primer is in depth enough that there are more than enough takeaways. Thanks for all the effort you've put in to that!

As for your considered cards, Thran Vigil is a favourite of mine. It isn't fantastic, but in my slower meta it hits hard. It's a reliable source of counters on your returning creatures. Just added Uncivil Unrest to my deck, it seems super promising.

Have you considered The Ozolith? I don't see it on your exclusions/maybe pages. It's done very well in my deck, especially after a Chasm Skulker blows up.

Nice deck! In looking at your list, I think you could make a few swaps with some of the stuff already in your Maybeboard:

  • Generous Gift can probably replace Jor Kadeen, since you are only running 5ish equipment, & having more removal doesn't hurt.

  • Karazikar, the Eye Tyrant can probably replace Raiyuu, for similar reasons as Jor Kadeen. Your deck doesn't necessarily want to do solo-attacks, & Karlach & Aurelia are already decent extra combat enablers. Karazikar's Goading is super helpful for deflecting aggro away, & restocking on draws.

  • Braids, Arisen Nightmare could be another good addition for draw, especially since you have some recursion & reanimation effects. She could possibly replace Phyrexian Dragon Engine  Meld, although the Meld with Mishra is a fun goal to pull off.

Hope these suggestions are helpful.

Solid looking deck! Have you had a chance to play it irl yet? In looking at your deck, I have a few suggestions:

  • Thundering Raiju might not be the best fit, mostly since you don't have many other means of making your creatures Modified with either +1/+1 counters or equipment. I'd suggest checking out Tectonic Giant as a potential swap. It's a little slower since it lacks Haste, but has some useful modes, one of which deals damage to each opponents.

  • Speaking of Haste, I'd suggest getting in some more Haste anthems, especially you have some higher CMC creatures which would otherwise be sitting ducks. I'm currently running Fervor, Ogre Battledriver, and Urabrask the Hidden in my Isshin deck. I like that Battledriver and Urabrask have some additional bonuses.

  • If you need more draw, I think Breena, the Demagogue could do a lot of work, and could be a potentially better fit than Phyrexian Dragon Engine  Meld. I know Dragon Engine has the cool factor of melding with Mishra, but Breena can draw a ton of cards, especially since opponents are less likely to remove it due to benefitting from it. It definitely makes games more dynamic with the added political layer. She can also be a source of counters if you decide to keep Thundering Raiju.

  • Plumb the Forbidden is another great draw spell, especially if you make creature tokens or want to have gas in response to a board wipe. Painful Truths is another solid option, and Gruesome Realization has some decent modal options.

I hope these suggestions are helpful. Best of luck with Isshin, I hope you have fun piloting him! He's my favorite commander of the past year, hands down.

Several cards with level up/leveling activated abilities are marked as illegal when Zirda, the Dawnmaker is designated as companion.

Here is a list of the cards I have noticed:

Lighthouse Chronologist, Artificer Class, Barbarian Class, Cleric Class, Druid Class, Fighter Class, Monk Class, Paladin Class, Ranger Class, Rogue Class, Sorcerer Class, Warlock Class, Wizard Class

Phyrexian Dragon Engine  Meld seems to have a similar issue.

I agree with plainsrunner. I'm currently trying out Karlach in my Isshin deck. I like it a bit more that Aurelia and some of the other extra combat creatures since Karlach doesn't have to attack to trigger. Making sure you have a volume of Vigilance anthems will help though.

Reconnaissance is an awesome pseudo-Vigilance anthem, and also helps protect your creatures at end of combat. I see you have it in Maybeboard already. Tocasia's Welcome would also be a good fit for your deck, since you seem token focused.

Of all the creatures in your 99, Phyrexian Dragon Engine  Meld and Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines feel like kinda awkward fits. Having played Mishra, Claimed by Gix  Meld, this dude alone is a closer/win-con for Isshin token decks. Elesh Norn mostly feels awkward because you don't really have ETBs to double, but I do recognize how powerful it is to turn off opponents' ETBs. Torpor Orb is another option if that's of interest, but is symmetrical.

Since I don't see them in your maybeboard, I highly recommend Impact Tremors, Witty Roastmaster, and Purphoros, God of the Forge. At least one of those paired with creature token production can help round out your group slug and damage effects. Purph is the least budget, but having the Indestructible makes it difficult to deal with.

This could be fun, and my thoughts drifted to Mishra + Isshin, Two Heavens as One but that puts you into Mardu. I saw this one list in fact where they did this but with a Mardu legends matter theme with cards like Ratadrabik of Urborg, Adeline, Resplendent Cathar.

Tenacious Underdog, Squee, Dubious Monarch, and No One Left Behind all are I believe perhaps considering if you're discarding cards to the graveyard off of Phyrexian Dragon Engine  Meld.
