Mind Bend

Instant

Change the text of target permanent by replacing all instances of one color word with another or one basic land type with another. (For example, you may change "nonblack creature" to "nongreen creature" or "forestwalk" to "islandwalk." This effect doesn't end at end of turn.)

Scapeshift, Primeval Titan, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Explore, Golos, Tireless Pilgrim, Arboreal Grazer, Spelunking, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove would be some cards that are fun.

Springheart Nantuko is such a fun card to build around. there are some many combos i can think of that would be fun with it assuming you trigger the landfall trigger and play for the bestow cost. bestowing it on Arboreal Grazer would make you empty your hand of all lands, bestowing it on Azusa, Lost but Seeking or Dryad of the Ilysian Grove allows you to play an infinite amount of lands, and Golos, Tireless Pilgrim or Primeval Titan as it would allow you to automatically play all the lands in your library... though you would need Spelunking or Amulet of Vigor to make the lands enter untapped. if you really wanna some jank infinite combo, bestow it on Scute Swarm and have Ashaya, Soul of the Wild for infinite scute swarms and landfall triggers. i think the most janky combo i can think of with this card would be Life and Limb, Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth, Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle, and Mind Bend. if valakut and yavimaya are on the battlefield and you mind bend valakut to replace the mountain text with forest. you can bestow any of your lands and have valakut ping an infinite number of times.

anyways, Springheart Nantuko combo tangent aside, i highly recommend adding either Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, Ramunap Excavator, Perennial Behemoth, and/or Walk-In Closet / Forgotten Cellar as it would allow you to recast your fetch lands from your graveyard every turn.

Mind Bend change the text on all black to x, then play spells that prevent creatures being blocked by non black creatures

Cover of Darkness will help in that too.

Personally I see little difference between playing Blood Moon and dropping a board wipe on an opponent whose topdecking. You win a war by depriving your opponent of resources.

Not to mention we're approaching 30,000 cards with different names and we have the ability to purchase online. There's no reason why you can't adapt your deck(s) to turn your opponent's strengths against him. That includes, but not limited to, restricting your nonbasic lands to ones that can produce red mana, adding creatures with Mountainwalk, and playing cards such as Conversion, Enchanter's Bane and Mind Bend.

In Casual there's no reason ANYTHING should be banned.

I'm also considering Mind Bend/Spectral Shift as some sneaky tech to change Blood Moon into forest moon, or even change Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle to work with Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth. If I go with Spectral Shift, I could combo it with Summoner's Pact to tutor for basically any creature (not sure if any non-green are that back-breaking). Veil of Summer would technically be a target as well, but I don't see that being worth it.

There's not much in the way of protection from green being played, because that would be the one coincidental upside, messing with opponents protections.

They probably aren't worth it, just figured I'd share in case it inspires anyone.

I've been toying around with this idea for a while in Modern:

Root Maze Choke Hold

Note, this deck isn't really well optimized and some of the card choices are out of date. The main idea is to use Root Maze and Choke to deprive your opponent of mana. You can also use Mind Bend to transform additional copies of Choke into more problems for your opponent.

I'd consider cutting Drake Haven and Stormtide Leviathan for some additional man lands or planeswalkers. Since you're playing casual, Standstill does really stupid things to your opponent in this kind of deck, since they end up getting smacked by man lands or out-valued by planeswalkers. But it punishes them for tapping out to cast cards by making Choke stronger. You might want to try this over your cycling cards.

Wow, thank you for letting me know, that's awesome! This was one of my favourite decks that I've ever played (I've since disassembled it because I'm trying to make some progress on cEDH Brago at the moment), it brings me so much joy to know that somebody out there is terrorizing their group with this monstrosity while I've (unfortunately) had it on the shelf.

To address your points Sumradagnoth:

  1. Yes Trait Doctoring is definitely bad, it just happened to be the last colour changing effect that I had laying around and I wasn't aware Sway of Illusion existed at the time (thank you), that's a great substitution and I'll edit that one in immediately.

  2. Blind Seer is cool and could add redundancy but I'd be wary of it's mana cost, spending six mana to do something Mind Bend does for only one mana seems like it could be too prohibitive. Especially considering the deck uses symmetrical stax effects, the card might get stuck in your hand most games.

  3. I reeaaaalllly like Painter's Servant as the win condition for this deck because it provides so much value outside of the combo and can serve as a stax piece if necessary, although I absolutely do acknowledge that Grindstone becomes an undesirable topdeck draw. Outside of Academy Ruins there isn't a ton of ways for mono blue to recur from the grave unfortunately, at least not without diluting the strategy of the deck too much (it's already not the most focused deck to begin with). I'd try being more careful about your timing casting Painter's Servant, keep it in your hand until the very last minute whenever possible. Something else you could consider is adding Mechanized Production or other better clone effects that would make a few different copies of Painter's Servant needing to be answered (maybe Mechanized Production instead of Pendrell Mists... I don't think that effect is quite worth paying 4 mana for personally, Propaganda is a better pillowfort effect that only costs 3 mana and allows your oppos to keep some creatures but encourages them to swing at your other oppos). Mechanized Production has the added benefit of being really nasty with Sphere of Resistance (which slots in easily in the place of Damping Sphere as long as your meta doesn't have an abundance of storm), and if those two cards manage to stick then Production + Sphere can act as their own back-up win condition. This also makes Tribute Mage better because it could find either/both Painter's Servant or Sphere of Resistance.

  4. I'm not a fan of Stormtide Leviathan (see my above point about the cost of Blind Seer, I'd expect it would be stuck in your hand most games) and I'd recommend to try adding another back-up win condition instead, like maybe the Mechanized Production package I had mentioned, in order to end the game faster. I think a second back-up combo or lock that could win the game independently of Servant + Grindstone would likely be far more reliable than casting a big beater and then also waiting a turn to go into combat.

I wish you the absolute best of luck piloting Llawan and feel honoured that my build inspired you to give it a try. I'd be thrilled if you'd continue to share your observations with me as you make changes to the deck!

May your tentacles crush enemies efficiently and mercilessly, cheers!

Not much into Vintage but on the lines of 'Prot:Black' to protect against Pestilence cards like Auriok Champion, Knight of Glory, and Mirran Crusader could prove effective. You could make more use of the protection by splashing blue for cards like Alter Reality/Mind Bend
