Flashback

Instant

Target instant or sorcery card in your graveyard gains flashback until end of turn. The flashback cost is equal to its mana cost. (You may cast that card from your graveyard for its flashback cost. Then exile it.)

MontaukMonster on Grixis Control

Good Morning,

I was playtesting a few hands with your deck the other day, and once I got the hang of it, it consistently beat one of mine I was working on. For snorts and giggles, I ran it up against Ravager cicra 2004 just to see what it would do.

vs. Ravager - Aeo Paquette, 2nd at Worlds 2004

Game 1: No mulligans. I'm keeping Island, Sewers, Stock Up, Thor, Flashback, and Reef. I'm a little concerned it's a slow hand for what I'm up against, and I'm on the draw. He opens with Seat of the Synod, Welding Jar, and Arcbound Worker. I draw a Resonating Lute and surveil, dropping Shoot the Sheriff because I need red more than I need to kill the regenerator. He swings for one, plays Glimmervoid, Arcbound Ravager, and Frogmite. I draw land, play the Reef, and take four to the face while he taps out for Cranial Plating. I could have Stocked Up instead, which would have left me tapped out instead of sitting on nothing while he drops a Disciple of the Vault, clobbers me for 13, and sacs me down to zero.

Game 2: I need as much fast defense as possible. I took out 2x Resonating Lute and the Deadly Cover-Up to make room for 2x Avengers Whateveritis and the Tidebender. On the play, I mulligan to 6 and keep a hand with Thundering Falls, 2x Flashback, Fire Magic, Quantum Riddler, and Thor. Turn 1, I surveil something that's not a land. He answers with Vault of Whispers, Ornithopter, Welding Jar, and Disciple of the Vault. I draw not a land and Fire his Disciple. Would have loved to take the 0/2 with it, but I can't have that bulls..t around. He answers with Seat of the Synod and Somber Hoverguard. I TD a Demolition Field and wait for some black so I can flashback a Requiting Hex. He answers my nothing with thee damage and a Glimmervoid, 2x Thoughtcast, and a Frogmite. I topdeck a Stock Up. I need a black. Or something so I can Stock up into something else. While I'm waiting, he drops Cranial Plating and attacks for 12, bring me to 5. My final draw is a Blazemire Verge, which I honestly belive is your deck's way of telling me to eff-off for putting it through that.

Icbrgr on Modern Control: Temur Wilderness Reclamation

@DragonMaster420 That's pretty much the going rate for how control decks achieve their wins... control wins by establishing an insurmountable advantage rather than racing.

Early Game (Turns 1–3): Focus on survival, using cheap interaction (e.g., Counterspell, Fire / Ice, and Lightning Bolt) to neutralize early threats.

Mid Game (Turns 4–5): Deploy Wilderness Reclamation or Cryptic Command to stabilize the board and/or generate massive card/mana advantage.

Late Game (Turns 6+): Once the opponent is out of resources, wait to safely deploy Traumatic Critique.

@DragonMaster420 as far as a Control deck goes its most definitely "fast enough" for current Modern (positioned 15th out of 43 players - 09/05/26 and Traumatic Critique makes it waaaay cleaner to close out games than how the deck as been built previously. The real issue the deck has is the increasing amount of maindeck enchantment removal decks have with Haywire Mite/Leyline Binding ect ect... its powerful but fragile. Utopia Sprawl isn't in the list because it is a proactive ramp spell in a reactive, instant-speed control deck. The deck needs cheap interaction on turn one and two; things like Planar Genesis/Growth Spiral that get played at Instant speed digging deeper into the deck to find the next essential spell with potential sequencing to on Turn 2 spiral and play and additional untapped land for holing up Spell Snare/Lightning Bolt.

@sirbar You're absolutely correct the surveil lands smooth out draws and play really nice with Flashback or fueling delve for Logic Knot... I simply just don't have any lol plan to pick some up when i've got some spare change to put towards the deck.

Ib has been on vacation, so I was also on "vacation" to gather his daily toenail clippings, whip his favorite cousins, wax his butt, and use my body as an umbrella on the beach.

While we were gone, several interesting cards came out!

Changeling Wayfinder: An honorary goblin that gets us a basic? Perfect!!!

Collective Inferno: MOAR DAMAGE!!!!

Fated Firepower: MOAR+!!!

Flashback: Deja Vu.

Gathering Stone: Not sure about this one yet.

Maximum Carnage: Ib's favorite date night theme!

Scuzzback Scrounger: Pain is a treasure. (Ib Halfheart, yesterday)

Soul Immolation: Amazing finisher!

Tablet of Discovery: Seems like a solid bit of ramp without a lot of downside for us.

White Lotus Tile: Or this one...

Zhao, the Moon Slayer: Perfect land dysfunction for the sideboard!

Zuko's Exile: Now likely the cheapest exile spell available to mono-red.

The Walls of Ba Sing Se: There is no war here....

Solstice Revelations: Dig diggy hole, dig diggy hole!

Cool but Rude: Ib's middle school teacher wrote this on his report card.

Elder Auntie: Should we let her move in?

JBTomero on Hazezon's Always Got It - [PRIMER] Update 10/02/26

JaymeRoolz42069: Good question - currently Strip Mine is not part of the meta I play in, so I haven't given it much investment. Slower effects like Avalanche Riders come up from time to time, and when they do FotD is such a powerful card I think 'oh well fair enough'. Vesuva making a second FotD copy does a good job preventing this.

Hazezon can handily win without FotD, it just needs enough time and space that FotD easily provides. Even if they remove it, it might be too late.

But if Strip Mine was a more prevalent problem, I'd consider Life from the Loam, I'd trade Flashback for Regrowth, and I'd add the new Petrified Hamlet to my land-tutoring toolbox. Other options: Sevinne's Reclamation, Undergrowth Recon, Bala Ged Recovery, Eternal Witness, Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds etc

But ultimately, and why there's something of a disarmament agreement in my meta, is that if my opponents used Strip Mine against me a ton... I'd add and use Strip Mine against them. And with all my land-tutoring I think they'd regret it.
