-2 Elspeth, Knight-Errent -1 Ajani Vengeant +3 Simian Spirit Guide 4 mana often came late in the game. Playing the plainswalkers did not always do much for me. I would rather get multiple plays on turn one or be able to get Eidelon of the great Revel out earlier.
Looking good

I was inspired by Pain Has An Element Of Blank to revisit this and it's working a lot better now. Some notable changes:
Illness in the Ranks: I wasn't too keen on this in the earlier build, but it's a permanent/more effective way of dealing with the 1/1s I'm giving out. Plus, works great in conjunction with...
Blood Artist: This guy puts in a ton of work, basically becoming copies 9-12 of Suture Priest and Blood Seeker.
Illness in the Ranks also works great with...
Mercy Killing! With the illness out it destroys one of their creatures and with my pain package it will likely hurt them quite a bit in addition. I'll probably gain some life as well!
With the addition of Illness in the Ranks I don't need Echoing Truth or ratchet bomb as much, except for the centaurs my Hunted Horror makes. Also pared down the soul sisters.
Keep it coming, this is turning out to be a lot of fun! Thanks for all the suggestions already (but now they're gooooone).

Glass cannon?
Apoptosis, 11 years ago
Took this deck out list night for the first time (the only difference to this deck list and what I played is that I ran 3x gifts and 4x Unflinching Courage
, but there were too many games where I was wishing for evasion) and was pretty disappointed going 1-2 on matches (3-5 on games) for the night. I faced two golgari decks and one mono-black deck, both matches that I lost too I basically got eaten by Pack Rat. I may most more details later. The three people I played against are all top tier players.
Basically, the deck may be an inconsistent glass cannon: when it goes off it wins, but it has little flexibility and interacts poorly with your opponents board state. Now, in defense of the deck, it's been a month since I played and I may have misplayed the deck and sideboard choices somewhat. So with that in mind I'm withholding judgement for now. I was very surprised that Archangel of Thune didn't win me more games. Actually it never did, in two games where I landed it, Pack Rat was able to overpower it. The deck also has consistency issues: out of 8 games one game I was mana screwed (actually won), two games I flooded (very surprising, won one of them), and a fourth I had to mulligan to 5 (still got to within one life from pulling out a win). But flooding twice with 22 lands is very odd and probably means I didn't have my deck shuffled enough, but there was one game where I started with three lands and drew 5 in arow... (actually I had 1 Temple of Triumph in the sideboard to bring in with Archangel of Thune and advent of wurm to ease casting, so in some cases I was running 23). But the consistency issue also includes being creature flooded in at least 2 two games (lost both). However, there were a few games where it seemed like I was one turn away from the win.
Anyway, I will still be using this deck for a little while because some of the results could have been bad luck. But there is a good chance that I will retool the deck.
P.S. Boros Charm
and Voice of Resurgence came out more often then not. Also I kept expecting to see Devour Flesh, but it never hit. Problem cards I did see were: Far / Away (just once), Drown in Sorrow, and Doomwake Giant with a lot of enchantment cycling (Mana Bloom for 0 to trigger multiple times).
Modern Playtest
gobyta, 11 years ago
Yesterday I tested my deck out against the modern matchups in my local meta. Oddly enough I did quite well but there were a few matchups that ran a bit tough:
First off one issue is the combo decks, it is quite hard for me to outrace them. I am able to survive off of life gain for a decent time but generally they get me. I was thinking that maybe I could add in an Ethersworn Canonist to stop this but opinions on how to control them would be awesome.
The only other issue I had was Torpor Orb, it basically hits the field and my game basically is squished. Luckily my opponent only got it out by turn four so I already had enough life and big enough dudes, but afterwards my machine stopped. Any ways to get around this would be great! I was thinking maybe a simple Smelt but all suggestions would be wonderful!
FNM Results
BobTheImam, 11 years ago
Went to my first FMN last week, achieving a 2-2 result. Not too shabby for a budget deck. I achieved my two wins vs BUG control and Boros midrange. Both of which are fringe playable decks, but I take what I can get. (Lost vs T1 Esper and Gruul decks, no shame XD ) Some easy changes to drastically improve playability, which cost money but still within a cheaper price range (all the changes gives the deck tcglow of $45, mid of $75). If you want to take some of these, heres what I would swap out. -1 Gyre Sage for +1 Nylea, God of the Hunt -2 Hunter's Prowess for +2 Garruk, Caller of Beasts -3 Forest for +3 Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx -1 Hunter's Prowess -1 Karametra's Acolyte for +2 Polukranos, World Eater
Minor substitutions

I was able to play test this deck for the first time tonight. It was a 1 vs 1 match against a fairly well tuned Marath deck a couple times. Here are the changes I made afterward. REMOVED: "Terror" "Crawlspace" "Sleeper Agent" "Herald of Torment" "Frozen Shade" ADDED: "Tribute to Hunger" (More legal targets) "Pristine Talisman" (Ramp & Lifegain) "Gatekeeper of Malakir" (Removal & Devotion) "Marshmist Titan" ( Flavor / Beater) "Insatiable Harpy" (Better than Herald in EDH)

Grove of the Burnwillows----->Verdant Catacombs
I think I am now officially finished with the manabase. I don't really have a slot for misty.
Angelic Arbiter--->Sigarda, Host of Herons
I have ways to protect myself from infinite combat damage and Things like Grave Pact and [All is Dustwere some of the only holes left. I think SIgarda will do some great work.

Since Anus Wellington has been redone for modern compliance, the only difference between this and it is that this gets rid of isochron scepter for another creature buff spell.

what do?
Topper_1898, 11 years ago
Okay so I have been looking at most of the spoilers so far for M15 and I have already ordered 3 copies of Garruk, Apex Predator I want to at least have hkm as a 2 of in this deck. What should I do to try and fit him in. I also may want to do some of the maybe board stuff like Brain Maggot into the main board and move Ajani, Mentor of Heroes into the main board. Please let me know what you all think and how I should go about doing it.
Splash Black
whalesequence, 11 years ago
Added a playset of Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth to add the splash for the new Garruk. Took out a couple Nissa, Worldwaker too add in the two Garruk. Garruk, Caller of Beasts is in its place until the site adds that card.
Deck Complete; Resetting Discussion
JakeHarlow, 11 years ago
After the help of many users, including InconspicuousPotato and Jamesfurrow, I've acquired and finalized a working mainboard. I'll report on how it does in Tier 1 Modern when I get a chance.
Unsure about Slaughter Games on the SB, as it seems redundant. It is possible that I may cut 1 to add another Combust.
Thanks to the community for all the support and help. I'm always willing to hear any and all ideas, so keep 'em coming. Cheers!

so removal's a problem. need some sideboard help as well.
milkdud9, 11 years ago
Kept touching up this deck and so have now had at least 5 months of experience with it... Since the new block is coming and the decklist is old, I'll update it. I was able to top 8 multiple times with this setup and have tried golgari and straight mono black versions but like the splash red the most.
What else?
Samit2011, 11 years ago
Hey guys, I need some help with a decision, I want to take out a blood baron, and I was wondering what I could add in its place. I don't want to add a new card together but add another copy of a card already in the deck.
Update #4
Audiofreek, 11 years ago
Due to the Deutschland WC match today and my friend running behind from getting home from errands this morning I was only able to play against a Sneak Attack control deck that was similar in some ways to the ones in the Portland SCG Open last weekend. Bottom line.. I won all three matches we played and big time. Spirit tokens came out early to use as attackers and blockers. A Parallel Lives was removed from the game but thanks to flashback on Lingering Souls I was able to keep a supply of spirits on the board. One of the games Beastmaster Ascension made all the difference but in the other one Intangible Virtue and Gavony Township did the work. He was frustrated that his deck was stopped by a bunch of spirits and with Vraska the Unseen removing an enchantment or two.
Some other decks I played against recently were nothing much to note except that when playing Planechase with another friend I lost bad (no, not bad but a huge A**whooping) because on Lethe Lake *oversized* he rolled chaos twice in one turn and I got milled out on turn 3 or 4.
Still not defeated in casual!

several one on ones, and many more multi play, at this time still undefeated!! now to get time to goto a fnm!
