Calling Mono-green Ezuri Players! How to deal with Wrath effects?

Commander Deck Help forum

Posted on May 14, 2016, 6:45 p.m. by abby315

I'm talking Wrath of God, Damnation, Decree of Pain, Decree of Annihilation, Jokulhaups, Rout. My playgroup plays all of these.

They also play Merciless Eviction, Black Sun Zenith and three of them have Elesh Norn.

Now, I like to think that it's a testament to my deck that I win at all, and I do sometimes. But more often than not I'll get "too scary" and wiped off the board, and they're getting to the point where anything I play is "too scary", so playing politically isn't really an option (one time I won by playing nothing but lands until I played Ambush Commander and now they probably won't even let me get away with doing nothing).

Am I resigned to just putting away the deck for multiplayer use? Should I try to go even more aggressive to take out some people before they can boardwipe? Are there any cards I can play to help (I'm thinking Lifeforce but it'll just make people mad)?

Here's my deck for reference: Let's Talk About Elves, Baby! (Ezuri EDH c:)

Thanks!! :)

I would play Eldrazi Monument for all those destroy effects and play Lifeforce. So what if they get mad, they already say everything you do is "scary" so embrace that and become the alpha player. Dont let people's opinions dictate your deck building strategy.

Eldrazi Monument is a good idea, the flying is incidentally really useful too. I'll look into getting a copy.

Unfortunately they REALLY have a lot of disruption (one plays Marath, Will of the Wild, one Brago, King Eternal, one Ob Nixilis, the Fallen, one five color superfriends) so having the table turn on me is pretty difficult to struggle through unless I get really good draws. I also feel like the Ob Nixilis player will refuse to play with me if I pull out a Lifeforce.

That being said, I have a Kozilek deck that I can play for fun, so I am interested in just making this Ezuri list the most competitive it can be for when I feel like beating down.

I just really like playing EDH competitively-- and it's not like this is a Stax deck, so I get disappointed when my playgroup hates on early boardstates, since it doesn't stop them from playing...

So there are a couple of ways you could help yourself with that, You can "benefit" from it by playing cards like Caller of the Claw or Fresh Meat

Prevent it from happening by playing cards like Soul of New Phyrexia or Eldrazi Monument

Or play the small amounts of recursion that mono-green has access too Grave Sifter is the only one I can think of at the moment.

Or the final option is, just be so aggressive and destroy your opponents before they have the chance to build up enough to board-wipe.

DimitriBloodmoon, thanks for commenting! I had Fresh Meat in the deck but never liked it at 4 mana. Caller of the Claw, on the other hand, is cheaper AND an elf, so I just ordered one and I'm happy to test it out. I've got Eldrazi Monument on my order list too; but I feel like Soul of New Phyrexia is too much of a mana investment and it'll be too clunky to save my elves in time.

I had Grave Sifter in the deck before too, but I'd just rather have Praetor's Counsel as that slot, plus Revive.

Creeping Renaissance is sick in my Ezuri - Regenerating Leader deck.

for every single creature in your graveyard... for a second time even. Only very rarely would i choose Praetor's Counsel over it.

Seasons Past could do well too, but it's way overhyped atm. 3-5$ isn't worth what it does.

Thanks for your comment! I just looked into Creeping Renaissance and I definitely agree it's a better slot than Praetor's Counsel. In it goes!

I think Seasons Past might not work as well as the other mass recursion effects, I'd probably put in Grave Sifter first. I usually have a lot of one-drops out and if they all got boardwiped picking just one of them all would be a waste of resources.

I hope that doesn't mean you replace Praetor's Counsel with Creeping Renaissance. I'd totally play both!

Looking at your deck list i'd consider cutting:

Ambush Commander - If he doesn't win you the game he'll cost you the game...

Drove of Elves & Heedless One- Might turn into fatties, but there's no utility past that.

Llanowar Mentor - Discard to get a single Token? Too pricey for a deck with that card draw.

Kalonian Hydra, Siege Behemoth & Lifeblood Hydra - Great cards, but terribly off flavor!

Some essentials i feel are missing:

Devoted Druid & Viridian Joiner - Useful early on, brutal when you prepare for big swings.

Karametra's Acolyte - Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx on a stick - gotta love it!

Seedborn Muse & Illusionist's Bracers - Do all the Elf things every turn and/or twice.

Skyshroud Poacher - Costier but better than Fauna Shaman, especially crazy with untap outlets.

Collective Unconscious - Elves = Cards

Scryb Ranger & Thousand-Year Elixir - more untaps + something like haste. Even an emergency flying blocker if needed.

Overwhelming Stampede - Double your strength after you pumped your mana into Ezuri, Renegade Leader.
