The title really is self explanatory.

Here's a thing to drive discussion:

Alright, I'm going Esper! I have never built Esper before, and I would love any advice that could be given! In fact, I've practically never built with White before, so even some simple "With White you'd generally rather do this than that" would be great!

Also, bear in mind that the best way to describe my meta in a single word would be to simply scream the word "Aggro" in all caps at the top of your lungs. So things that might otherwise be SB tech, as long as they aren't unplayable against other things, may be mainboardable, and SB options would be super welcome suggestions!

And thanks to everyone who's been super helpful so far!

Sultai Ascendancy? Im not a control player or even a Sultai player, but it seems good to cycle through your deck, especially in long games, which control does naturally. It also fuels your Dig, and whatever other Delve cards you decide to put in here, if any.

It is a neat card. I run it in my EDH deck The Blessed Sleep. But I feel like I'd be more likely to use it in a deck built for, like, Living Lore with a bunch of Worst Fears/Temporal Trespass/Ghastly Conscription/Fated Return (which, as an aside, infinite combos with Living Lore) type massive CMC instants/sorceries. I'd not so sure about it in here, really. I've also been thinking about just dropping green altogether. I put green in here to begin with just to deal with Gaea's Revenge, but I'm now feeling like due to the low odds of having a Sultai Charm in hand when that sees the field, and the low number of decks that run it, having sideboard Infinite Obliteration might be better. It would totally simplify the land base too. Thanks for your thoughts though.

I don't think you lose much by dropping green at this point. If anything, that gives you more reason to play cards like Disciple of the Ring or Erebos's Titan, and allows you to play one of my favorite 'walkers, Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver.

Really, dropping green doesn't even stop you from playing against hexproof creatures, because you can simply add edict effects, like Foul-Tongue Invocation, or Self-Inflicted Wound. You also get to play Dragonlord Silumgar, who is the bomb.com

August 24, 2015 12:04 a.m.

This is what happened when I googled "www.theBomb.com"

That is actually I hilarious thing to call him, though.

I think I'll try that. Also, I just realized that Erebos's Titan totally combos with Learn from the Past and Infinite Obliteration with his usually considered to be irrelevant second ability.

As much as I like Learn from the Past with Erebos's Titan, I'd recommend playing Day's Undoing. It gives you a fresh hand and shuffles your graveyard back in. While you're opponent gets to do this same, this usually works out better for you than for them (after all, you get all your counterspells back).

August 24, 2015 1:08 a.m.

I guess. I do see where you're coming from, but in this case I think I'm going to have to make a "Meta-Call" and say that due to the sheer amount of RDW in my meta giving them all that burn probably isn't going to be nice :/ There's also the fact that Learn from the Past can respond to Den Protector flipping up by getting rid of their graveyard. I feel like that would be so sad.

"Aha! Flip up den protector- Activated ability so you can't counter it! Target Siege Rhino! Trigger all my raptors!"

"Learn from the past. I draw a card then discard a card and get my titan back to hand. Congratulations, you have a 3/2 and I have a 5/5. End turn?"

But actually, I think I'll use Icefall Regent over him. Mainly because I already own a playset of Icefalls. Also, the 1/20 cards triggering Foul-Tongue Invocation is a nice bonus. But really this is more of an economy thing. If I happen to pull a titan I'll make that swap.

I'd recommend switching to a dragon-based control deck if you already have a playset of Icefall Regent. All you really need to complete the deck then is Silumgar's Scorn and Dragonlord Silumgar.

While Learn from the Past does screw with Deathmist Raptor, it's a lot worse than just Exiling all of it with Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver or Infinite Obliteration. I see Learn from the Past as really only being useful against Mill, whereas Day's Undoing can get you your win-cons, by drawing you a new hand, and shuffling all your control spells back in.

No matter the route you end up taking, if you're going to keep in Icefall Regent and Ugin, the Spirit Dragon, I'd highly recommend Haven of the Spirit Dragon to deal with any potential removal that you can't deal with.

August 24, 2015 5:18 p.m.

Mk. I might just do that dragon control thing, since I own a playset of the drifting death and a playset of his scorn. And yeah, I agree about Learn from the Past. I'll think of something to put in that slot in its place.

August 24, 2015 8:29 p.m.

Alright Errast, turns out I actually only have 2 Silumgar's Scorns. But I think I prefer not running four, since I think I'll be fairly often siding out some dragons for the leech of aggro-death, Jorubai Murk Lurker. Do you think it might be better to drop Ashiok for another Icefall? I mean, Ashiok is hilarious and her ultimate usually just strait-up wins games, but against a lot of things she can be dead pretty quickly, whereas Icefall is pseudo removal and triggers Dragonlord's Prerogative, Foul-Tongue Invocation, and Silumgar's Scorn.

Also, what is something solid SB against Ramp? There's only a few in my meta, but that seems to be my worst matchup. Thanks.

Alright, I'll tackle this one by one, so here we go!

  1. 3 Silumgar's Scorn is the very least I could recommend for your deck, so keep it at that.
  2. Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver is good against slower matches, like Control, Midrange, and Ramp decks, relegate it to the sideboard and throw in some Icefall's.
  3. The only thing I could recommend against ramp for your deck are cards like Dragonlord Silumgar or Clever Impersonator. If they're playing a bunch of big dudes, then it's always good to steal their biggest dude. After all, you can always sideboard Dragonlord Silumgar out.

Hope this little list helped. Good luck with the deck!

Cool deck!

By the way, if you want spaces in your custom categories, but an underscore (_) in between each of your words.

August 27, 2015 9:59 p.m.

Thanks!

And, as an aside, I went 2-2 at FNM this week. Round 1: RDW: Loss: Highest CMC of 3 is a thing. Round 2: BW Warriors: Win: Man, languish is also a thing. Round 3: RDW: Win: I do not know why I went 2-0 here and 0-2 first match. I honestly think this was the better deck. Round 4: Rally the Ancestors: Loss: Game three he top decked three Rallys in a row and I had countered a liliana so I could only counter the first one :/

August 29, 2015 2 a.m.

Hey bud. I used your base, original with Sultai. But, focused on your NEW concept of Black Blue mainboard. I used Sultai Dragons control with planeswalkers. Went undefeated last night. It was pretty intense. I used Mana confluence, and 2 dragon safe havens. Ugin, Garruk, Silmgar 2 of the drifting death one of the new version. AND. Mainboard 1 Dragonlord Dromoka. Its uncounterable and they cant cast spells on my turn. So. I use my counter spells on their turn.

Ill tweak more. But, every single person I played- I had answers for. Great ideas man, couldn't have don't it without your list and tweaking for my meta

August 29, 2015 9:42 a.m.

Yay! FerociousDoshi, I'm so glad my deck was able to help you take FNM by storm! I was also able to get 2 Haven of the Spirit Dragon last night for a Whisperwood Elemental and something else last night right before FNM.

Plus, I bought some Korean packs and pulled a Languish :P I then traded one of my English ones and a Korean Sword of the Animist I'd just pulled for a Tasigur, the Golden Fang and a Molten Vortex. The vortex was sheerly to make the trade even.

August 29, 2015 2:08 p.m.

Also, Could you maybe post that list on TO so I can take a look at it?

August 29, 2015 6:29 p.m.

ok. forgive me, first time ever building a deck on this site...http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/29-08-15-pJJ-sultai-dragons/

August 29, 2015 10:18 p.m.

PS. I used Dissipate in mine. Because I do not own any Dissolve.

Actually works pretty good. Exiling something is better than putting in graveyard for delve or Deathmist Raptor

i've tested this out a bit......you get wrecked hard by tutelage decks, largely due to an overabundance of removal/sweeps/creatures and an underabundance of counters. even then, you still end up having maybe 8-10 relevant non-creature spells in deck to deal with their threats......and when you tap out for your finisher, even having boarded in obliterations to deal with jace, then you get hit hard, usually with tutelage+Whelming Wave.

September 1, 2015 8:23 p.m.

Yeah, tutelage is a thing. A hard thing. A thing that seriously beats this deck.

Fortunately, there is at least one thing it is not. That is 'a thing in my meta.'

I am thinking of making this Esper after BFZ is a thing, could run a 2-of Utter End, maybe run it SB too? Surely there will be Cough Eldrazi Cough, I mean, targets for it.

lordmalphas says... #21

Yeah, that card will definitely shoot up in value.......the foil playset I pulled is looking pretty nice.

September 1, 2015 9:03 p.m.

I wouldn't be surprised to see End Hostilities go up too, just because of the probability of some (Mythic)rare equipment to represent the Kor's life style. Idk, I'm getting my playset Friday just in case.

September 1, 2015 11:02 p.m.

How have you faired recently?? I won it all last Friday. Wasn't able to play this last Friday. Wednesday, was a bit rough. Finished 2-2. But, was doing a fantasy football draft on my phone. Don't recommend that, btw. Too hard to focus.

September 5, 2015 10:34 a.m.

Great, went 3-1 last night, only loss was round one to RDW in which I mistook a Korean card in hand for a swamp and kept a one land hand full of three drops instead of a 2 land have full of 3 drops on the draw, which would have given me pretty solid odds of drawing a third land in three draws. And I got some stuff that may end up with this deck becoming Esper, and I got a foil Haven, which is beautiful.

Also saw someone combo Feed the Clan and Alhammarret's Archive, and I realized how hilarious that would be with Defiant Bloodlord. Not good enough to merit running, but it would be pretty hilarious in an Abzan life gain deck with rhinos and Palace Siege.

September 5, 2015 2:29 p.m.

FerociousDoshi

Those games, by the way, on Friday:

Round 1: Loss: RDW.

Round 2: Win: Jeskai Tempo: This was pretty hilarious, I had to go totally proactive and he was responding to all my things. It was weird.

Round 3: Win: RDW: Basically the same deck as Round one. Better hand, I guess.

Round 4: Win: Bant Midrange: Actually a draw because we went to rounds and ran out of time, but he conceded to me so I'd get a pack on the condition that I give him a kickback of sorts from my reward. We went to rounds game 2 and I'd won game 1.

That last game I totally forgot to side in Clever Impersonator, but I did manage to Infinite Obliteration twice naming Ojutai and Monastery Mentor which was most of his win-cons haha. He eventually won with a well-defended Seeker of the Way.
