Introduction
Love cycling? Hate graveyard hate? Feeling spicy? Then Spellshift Surge might be the deck for you!
The plan of this deck is simple:
- Cycle and/or transmute via Tolaria West and Dimir House Guard into Pact of the Titan and Spellshift.
- Cast Pact then Spellshift Pact.
- Trigger and cast Primal Surge, put Xenagos, God of Revels and Emrakul, the Aeons Torn on to the battlefield.
- Go face with a 30/30 hasty Emrakul.
Q & A
Q: How is this deck better than other combo decks like Living End, Storm or Ad Nauseam?
A: Spellshift Surge is immune to many hate cards, such as Leyline of the Void, Rest in Peace, Stony Silence, and Leyline of Sanctity, that would trouble such decks. (Grafdigger's Cage, Lost Legacy and Ethersworn Canonist are still annoying, but said decks also have difficulty dealing with those cards.)
Q: Then why isn't everybody playing it?
A: It is rather slow. While Storm and Living End can go off on turn 3 fairly reliably, Spellshift Surge will likely go off on turn 5, with turn 4 being possible with some good draws.
Also, it is very weak to discard and counters, as there is little redundancy.
Q: Then why should I play it?
A: It's outside the meta and cooler!
Spellshift Surge might have dropped out of college while Living End is riding a full PhD scholarship, but it's more fun at parties!
