Description

The most annoying strategies are always the best strategies, which is why I decided to make this gain and drain deck! There's been a lot of changes since my initial version of this deck, and the changes seem to have made it much more consistent and draining.

Card Breakdown

As much as I would love to have Sorin, Grim Nemesis in the main, he's too off-curve for a somewhat aggro deck. So, he goes into the sideboard for when we get into those grindy type matchups where he can be more useful with providing some card advantage and instant life drain.

Initially, I didn't have Captain's Claws in this deck, but its token producing ability is pretty ideal for a number of reasons. Westvale Abbey  Flip needs sac fodder to transform, which can be provided by Captain's Claws and Gideon, Ally of Zendikar. Combine that with Zulaport Cutthroat, and a Westvale Abbey  Flip Transformation is even more devastating to the opponent. This token producing is also to our advantage with cards like Kalastria Healer. With all of the lifegain going on in this deck, Serene Steward can get us some incredibly beefy creatures, especially if we have multiple Drana's Emissarys out on the board, or multiple transformed Accursed Witch  Flipes.

Thanks for taking the time to check my deck out, and feel free to leave any suggestions!

I like the life drain! I had one of these that mutated into a CoCo allies but that sorta fizzled with the new release and other cards coming out.

Have you played this competitively at all?

Forceofnature1 I haven't played it competitively yet, I'm still in need of another Gideon, Ally of Zendikar and another Sorin, Grim Nemesis, as well as a few other cards. I should be getting what I need pretty soon, so I'll be taking it to FNM ASAP to see how it fares.

You seem to be about half way to the standard B/W Vampire ally deck that a lot of people are playing currently. If you drop Read the Bones and Gideon, Ally of Zendikar for Alms of the Vein and some instant life gain/drain you will almost be there. Accursed Witch  Flip instead of Essence Depleter gives you a creature that can either attack unopposed, at will, or be killed and transform to give more life gain/drain. In my own version of this deck, I drop Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim and March from the Tomb for Always Watching (or Immolating Glare in the side-board).

Murphy77 I hadn't considered adding Accursed Witch  Flip to the deck, I definitely think I'll switch her out for Essence Depleter. I'm still debating whether to put in Alms of the Vein, and in an earlier version of this deck I made I had Always Watching , so I'll probably end up adding that back in. Still don't really know if I need March from the Tomb, so it might be dropped in favor of something else.

I would drop Sorin completely and add more Gideon. Gideon's 0 ability synergises so much with kalastria healer and lantern scout (see below). Since most of your cards are 2/3 mana the lifedrain is not much more on Sorin.

I would also consider changing serene steward for lantern scout. The lifelink synergises well with cliffhaven vampire and ayli.

I would swap anguished unmaking for retreat to emeria. In this deck you are not bothered about losing creatures via chump blocking, you either trigger zulaport or are able to sac them to ayli. Also, after turn 4 or 5 your hand is going to be empty and top decking lands is bad. However, with retreat to emeria, it turns another top decked land into an ally (and triggers rally) or a +1/+1 counter. If your plan for anguished unmaking was to deal with ormendahl / avacyn then your side decked stasis snares should be ok. If they were for planeswalkers I would perhaps side deck some ruinous paths.

I would perhaps consider cutting always watching for either avacyn or make a stand, something that grants indestructible so you don't get blown out by removal or bigger creatures etc.

I get why you have Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim in the deck (because it's an awesome card for a 2 drop!), but I think Pious Evangel  Flip would be a better fit. I get it-- deathtouch, she has abilities if you manage to get 30+ life, etc..., but how often do you actually get to 30+ life? If it's like my deck (B/W Ally life gain/drain), not as often as you would like.

While it costs a lot of mana to cast, Felidar Sovereign might also be a good addition.

The problem with both of my suggestions thus far is that they're not allies, and that's what you want most. Vampire Envoy and Ondu War Cleric are both allies and provide a couple of different ways to boost life. Vampire Envoy is just a good card as it is a 1/4 with flying.

Hope these few ideas help!
