Deadly Visit

Sorcery

Destroy target creature.

Surveil 2. (Look at the top two cards of your library, then put any number of them into your graveyard and the rest on top of your library in any order.)

...sorry but FINALLY I PROMISE: Price of Fame is a strict upgrade to Deadly Visit. It costs less even targeting a non-legendary creature and is an instant to boot!

Okaaay, now that I've had a chance to think about things and take a look around I've got some more thoughts. Somehow I managed to forget the new Ashiok, Ashiok, Nightmare Muse, who's a definite bae if you go in for that sort of thing. Thought Erasure is great disruption spell and four copies would really not be too many! Mission Briefing could be an interesting one-of that acts as another copy of whatever you need, and at the very worst would give you Surveil 2. Considering how deep you're going on said mechanic you might want a pair of Enhanced Surveillances - did serious work for me at the set pre-release and gets exponentially better if you jump on the Creeping Chill/Narcomoeba train! There's also good interaction with Syr Konrad, the Grim who will drain your opponent when you surveil your own creatures, make your opponent discard theirs and when you activate the second part of Enhanced Surveillance. Nightveil Predator is cool but mana intensive, so honestly I think you're better going one further in Doom Whisperer or Konrad. Connive / Concoct is a beefy surveil card but probably better for the sideboard along with the other two copies of Deadly Visit and Unexplained Disappearance (plus maybe Doomfall?). Almost at the end now, but I'd add Drowned Catacombs to strengthen the mana base and perhaps some of the Eldraine land cycle, and even a single Arguel's Blood Fast  Flip considering you've mentioned how low your life gets!

I think I would switch Junktroller and Chromatic Lantern for more surveil like Deadly Visit Doom Whisperer . Also I think your whole food-creature focus is not very good if you really want your commander to deal the damage. Reanimate spells like Cauldron's Gift would maybe help more and can bring your commander back when he inevitably gets focused

Hey berryjon! Although wizards did print strictly worse cards from set to set, they also just did Price of Fame and Deadly Visit in the same set. They even printed functionally the same card (: Draw 3 cards and lose 3 life) at different rarities in a commander set. Nice article!

I played Sunday in my prerelease and went 5-0 with Grixis. I opened a Dimir box with promo Lazav and had a very strong collection of commons - 2 Watcher in the Mist, 2 Deadly Visit and the best cards in the deck 3 Artful Takedown. I had 10 surveil enablers, yet only 2 payoffs in 1 Dimir Spybug and 1 Disinformation Campaign, which I think is the single best card in the set.

Unfortunately, I got no bombs so I splashed red for a Crackling Drake, Hypothesizzle and of course, 1 Niv-Mizzet, Parun.

Played against Golgari 2 times, 1 selesnya and 2 Dimir and cast Niv-Mizzet only once, but the plentyful removal was nice.

Overall, the set was challenging and there were representatives of all guilds that did 4-1 at least, so everything felt competitive.

Hey, nice prerelease sealed deck, but a deck like this doesn't translate well to Standard.

This is fine list of cards you want to play in Standard, but it's not yet a finished deck. Starting out making a list of cards is good, everyone starts out doing this, but the next step is to narrow down the list. Keep the good cards and cut the rest. For Standard decks don't build them like sealed decks. You can use up to four copies of a card in a Standard deck and you have freedom to play the better cards and cut the least good cards.

For example here cards like Glowspore Shaman, Kraul Harpooner, Golgari Findbroker, Underrealm Lich, Izoni, Thousand-Eyed, Find / Finality, Status / Statue even Swarm Guildmage are all good cards for Standard. Why are they good cards for Standard? They either give you value when ETB (enters the battlefield) (Glowspore, Findbroker). Have good stats (power and toughness) for their mana cost (Hapooner, Glowspore). They can win you the game if not answered right away (Lich, Izoni) or they give you a lot of options for a single card (Status, Find).

In contrast cards like Child of Night, Moodmark Painter, Hired Poisoner, Erstwhile Trooper, Grappling Sundew, Deadly Visit, etc. are not cards for Standard because there's many other cards that cost the same that are better options.

I don't want to tell you how to make your deck. I'm simply giving you some advice of how to improve it for Standard. In Standard you can also play cards from other sets. In Guilds of Ravnica Standard which starts Oct. 5th you can also play cards from sets: Ixalan, Rivals of Ixalan, Core Set 2019 (M19) and Dominaria. Using cards from all these sets and cards from Guilds of Ravnica you can build a good budget casual Golgari Standard deck with only uncommon/common cards with a sprinkling of rares/mythics that you have.

Here are three strong budget cards for Golgari: Dusk Legion Zealot, Plaguecrafter and Ravenous Chupacabra.

I offer more advice such as good practices when building a Standard deck, etc. Would you like more advice?
