This list has been very helpful in tuning my commanders and also planning new decks to have quality commanders. But when will we be getting an update for Commander 2019? I know a few commanders are getting spotlighted quite a bit but I'd like to know where the rest of the possibilities stand.

Hello all! Here's our update for C19.

Competitive

High

Mid

Explanations:

Anje Falkenrath

Anje is a value-generating commander that is an outlet for Worldgorger Dragon. She stands as a sidegrade to Xantcha, Sleeper Agent.

Atla Palani, Nest Tender

Atla has some decent potential to cheat in creatures, some interesting Mirror Entity combos, and built in boardwipe protection in colors that need it. She's limited by her color identity, but is powerful enough to compel competitive exploration and play.

Elsha of the Infinite

A strong value engine and a third of the Elsha/Helm/Top style combo.

K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth

A very powerful cost reducer, albeit in colors that struggle for interaction. Tentatively placing him in Competitive.

Chainer, Nightmare Adept

His "reanimation" ability is a little too fairly costed between the discard and having to cast the creature. Rakdos limits interactivity and reanimator bombs. No obvious combos discovered yet.

Greven, Predator Captain

A relatively powerful draw engine could fuel some hybrid fair/unfair strategies.

Grismold, the Dread Sower

Fairly substantial token producer at a cheap cost.

Slimefoot, the Stowaway

In similarity to Grismold, we've re-evaluated Slimefoot as High Power.

Volrath, the Shapestealer

No obvious combos, but is in a powerful color combination and lends to a lot of synergies.

Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer

Very narrow ability on top of a small pool of morphs.

Gerrard, Weatherlight Hero

Difficult to abuse ability, an unfortunate 'dies' trigger, and in lackluster colors.

Ghired, Conclave Exile

Reasonably strong combat threat with Populate shenanigans, but solidly fair and slow to build up.

Marisi, Breaker of the Coil

Combat slience is hard to abuse in these colors. Goading creatures can be quite disruptive.

Pramikon, Sky Rampart

Can support turtling strategies in combat-oriented metas.

Rayami, First of the Fallen

Very specific hate and a difficult to amass set of keywords.

Sevinne, the Chronoclasm

One copy per turn on a narrow flashback interaction is difficult to abuse effectively.

Tahngarth, First Mate

Re: Gerrard's death trigger being "unfortunate": not to be snarky, but you do realize the subsequent exiling lets you put him into the command zone right? Not disputing the tier placement though.

It would be much better as an Enters the Battlefield trigger.

i think that anje is not a sidegrade to xantcha, but rather an upgrade. Why?

Anje can go off on the turn she enters play, and her deck is practically 60 cards in some cases. ive even played against variants that ran LED by discarding madness cards in response to triggers, emptying their hand and then refilling it when the triggers resolve to go off on turn 3.

still think she's competitive but maybe not maximum power, yet. though id say she is almost there, she just needs more interaction and better madness cards, a mechanic that will defs will be reprinted.

First off - thanks for the update! I appreciate all you do for the format :)

Curious on some differences of thinking between this list and the cedh database:

There are 4 commanders currently sitting at Mid Power that are on the Fringe tab of the cEDH database: Anafenza, the Foremost , Edgar Markov , Bruse Tarl, Boorish Herder , and Ikra Shidiqi, the Usurper

  • For context there are 29 commanders on this Fringe tab in Competitive and 17 in the High Power on this list.

  • There are also 7 commanders that listed as High Power here that are on the Outdated or Meme tabs of the cEDH database.

  • As a final point of context there are 3 Competitive and 111 High Power Commander here that are not anywhere within the cEDH database.

The point of all this context is that the 4 Mid Power Commanders listed above are played enough to facilitate their being added a database otherwise full of Competitive and High Power Commanders.

Please move these forgotten 4 up to at least High Power for the love of systemic symmetry, or provide good reasoning for not doing so while having so many Commanders sitting in High Power with little to no representation elsewhere on the internet ( Ambassador Laquatus , Gaddock Teeg , etc.)

We are not associated with the cEDH Decklist Database and our resulting judgements may differ.

I think key to this particular set of discrepancies is that while building an analogue deck (in "off" colors with a suboptimal commander) to an established cEDH deck is possible, it doesn't reflect the power potentials of the commander itself. Example: Does a Dakkon Blackblade Esper Naus/Grace build that can steal games at fringe Competitive tables mean Dakkon belongs in Competitive? Definitely not.

We will take another look at how the off-color Partners fit into our schema going forward.

How do we go about submitting a deck list to be reviewed and possibly added to the competitive section?

Hey I wanted to submit my decklist of Ezuri, Renegade Leader . I really think he should be considered a "Competitive" Tier deck. It's a very fast combo deck that I've piloted for many years and it always performs. Here's my current primer!

Thanks for the quick reply ShaperSavant!

  1. It would be great to have more example decks linked for High Power! Thanks for finding examples so quickly :)
  2. I understand the broader point you're trying to make, but Dakkon Blackblade offers no synergy to the Esper Naus/Grace plan, which is not true for any of the decks I listed.
  3. Piggy-backing on the #2, you have many decks that DO synergize with their commanders that are outclassed (i.e. General Tazri or the plethora of other UGx Food Chain commanders. What if someone wants to play a Razaketh, the Foulblooded + Leonin Relic-Warder strat without having to play partners? Ambassador Laquatus is thoroughly outclassed by Urza, Lord High Artificer .
  4. Two of the 4 decks I referenced (Edgar and Blue Pod) have been updated TODAY!! The Teeg and Laquatus lists you referenced haven't been updated in almost a YEAR. Part of why I keep harping on these decks is that they're well-written primers geared specifically toward cEDH. I don't know very many up-to-date Mid Power decks that fall into that category, or I would be championing them as well ;)

ShaperSavant I am by no means a competitive player but as far as "no obvious combos" for Volrath would his interaction with Tree of Perdition be good enough? Seems pretty silly to me but then again I am pretty silly myself :P

Please consider this for the competitive list for K'rrik. I've put a lot of thought and work into making it perfect but I'm always welcome to well thought out criticism and suggestions.

Chainer combos with buried alive, dump Necrotic Ooze , kiki jiki, and mog fanatic, cast ooze from gy, has haste from chainer, target itself, make infinite copies of itself, use fanatics ability to sac them all to deal infinite damage.

September 6, 2019 6:05 p.m.

Gerrard only true downside is his color identity, but you can still combo with him, a sac outlet, and loyal retainers

RNR_Gaming: the parser doesn't like capital letters on the object type identifier. So it has to be 'deck', not 'Deck':

I brewed an Atla Palani deck, would anyone be willing to look at it and give me some advice or tell me if I made some mistakes? I want to build one of two of my brews but I'm not sure if this deck will actually work. I would greatly appreciate any help I could get if anyone is willing.

I created a deck for kaalia, zenith seeker as well. if anyone would be willing to look at this for advice. it's at medium budget right now as theres no original dual lands in it and some other cEDH staples that can be added. can turn in a t2 win with the "optimal turns" usually tests at 4-6 turn.

ok ladies and gents, this is the last deck in my possible build list. If anyone would be so kind as to review it and tell me my mistakes or things to make it better. I should note that im not trying to win on turn 3-5, I just want to win after the table has got to play a bit. the store I play at doesn't have a major competitive seen so I can't do a top tier efficient deck or I won't be able to play. All three of the decks i posted for review are not netdeck, they are all home brew. i just don't know all of the interactions.

Hi again wanted to get an idea of what criteria Edgar Markov doesn't meet within the guidelines for competitive play? Been working on the list for a little bit of time and wanted to see other than CA in the command zone, what he lacked in regards to making the competitive tab?

The Pulls towards the deck is it is a similar playstyle to that of the Sidisis, focusing on fast combo and reanimation. It has one of, if not the, largest amount of layered cards between it's Skullclamp and Razaketh, the Foulblooded lines, as well as the fastest razaketh the foulblooded lines, usually going off with between 0/2 mana usually. The Razaketh lines included also are able to win from 2 creature + 0 mana, and with the recent addition of Dockside Extortionist an alternative line for later in the game that doesn't rely on chaining 0 drops. This allows us to have a low curve and also plays post Ad Nauseam fueling, Carnival of Souls as well as Phyrexian Altar which layer with the Oathsworn Vampire combo within the deck.

The clear disadvantages of the deck being the number of "dead" cards we layer to form more redundancy within the list, as well as the lack of Blue which would supply cantrips and counterspells for the deck. This interaction suite of the deck is slowly improving with more printings of stronger cards as well as effects such as Mandate of Peace .

I think neheb dreadhorde champion deserves teir 2. It's a draw engine mana producing combo piece on the command zone. My neheb deck has performed pretty good in cedh match ups. It should fall somewhere near godo in power level.

I was looking to submit my Anje deck that I have been playing at recent competitive tournaments at my lgs, overall the deck has been performing well and I believe there still can be some slight changes to be made but, over time the list will still be updated.
