Ha, Nourishing Shoal—I always forget about that card. But yes if that’s what the hard data is, then I’d say you have another winner here. Original deck design and interest factor will always beat out ‘netdeck ftw’ in my book, and finding that balance of the best of both makes everything that much more fun.

Balaam__ I just spent the last 2 hours play-testing casually to see how the life loss pans out, and most of the time? I'm fine. However, I am within what I like to refer to as my 'Red Panic' zone, where a RDW would knock me out.

  • In short, once I've gotten into the 6 or less life range, and that's frequent enough, averaging 2.3 repeated out of 5 times. It's often enough for me to consider mainboarding Nourishing Shoal, and that's really the best I've got for such a problem.

  • In matchups with burn the Shadowspear (or any of the other 1 drop artifacts, really) are ALWAYS, and I mean ALWAYS getting found turn 2. It's too easy with my Tutor line-up.

  • In control heavy matchups, as expected, I kinda play bad. Something like Berserk really doesn't help me here and wouldn't for legality, but I digress- in those types of games I don't really have a great option.. only a good one. Apostle's Blessing.

  • Stompy gets tanked because Green might be big but Golgari grows bigger. Surprisingly this is where the +1/+1 given from exile due to Plotting Aloe Alchemist is SO important. Because up against Boomer Tarmogoyf i edge out with the lead AND gain Trample for the turn on my turn .

  • Artifact heavy matchups get gutted by Force of Vigor, and only delays my game by a turn much like the description above. Monument to Endurance builds make me think about Delve cards, and Become Immense precisely.

  • If there's wiggle, it might be Lost Jitte or maybe Lavaspur Boots, both? Potentially...but that's super secure and strong because of it's built in consistency from Urza's Saga.

I look forward to hearing from you further! And the deck description will obviously be updated at some point.. I've just gotten so lazy about that between moving and other things in life right now. Nonetheless, thought of you when I put the "final" draft together- Cheers!

I am very fond of any deck that plays Magic ‘not normally’, i.e. using/abusing zones of play in strange and advantageous ways. I like the mission statement here, but I wince a little when considering the enormous potential life loss Spoils of the Vault and Dark Confidant can incur. There is Scavenging Ooze, but is that enough to offset it? I’m eyeing that Shadowspear in the sideboard and wondering if it should see maindeck use. Then again, if things go according to plan it may not be needed and thus that slot be better occupied by what you currently have. Tough to say without extensive use.

Suggestions for general good stuff: Whip of Erebos, Bident of Thassa, Hammer of Purphoros, Academy Ruins, Drownyard Temple.

Depending on your budget, Volrath's Stronghold and Crucible of Worlds gets your discarded stuff back.

Dino-riding mentor

Creature - Dinosaur Knight

Other Dinosaurs you control have "saddle 4" and "while this creature is saddled it gains flanking for each creature saddling it (each instance of flanking triggers separately)"

Other Knights you control can saddle Dinosaurs as though their power were 2 greater.

At the beginning of your end step, untap each Knight you control that saddled a Dinosaur this turn.

Swebb87 on Sagas?!?? Yojimbo & Lilysplash mentor

Sagas will be the death of me and how I understand magic rulings. 2 questions about the same two cards interacting.

  1. Can I target the Summon: Yojimbo with the Lilysplash Mentor before adding the 4th lore counter? I know it's a turn based effect (adding the lore counter straight away after draw step and entering first main)?
  2. Can I do the above question after the 4th lore counter, thus getting the effect and then bouncing prior to Yojimbo being sacrificed

Not sure if this example works, but Mathas, Fiend Seekerfoil isn't very popular and I wanted an off color group hug style deck so I went with Mathas and threw some goad/forced combat cards in.

sylvannos: An answer to your question has been up for a while. Since there don't seem to be any more follow-ups or corrections that need to be made, I marked one of them as the "Accepted answer" so this topic can move out of the list of unanswered questions. In the future, remember to use the "Mark as Answer" button on the response that you feel is the most helpful answer to your question, or respond with a follow-up if needed.

Rhadamanthus on Volrath Shapstealer and Summon:Primal Odin

It will keep the ability, since there's no specific duration given ("until end of turn" etc.) and it's a separate effect from the effect that turned Volrath into a copy of Odin. If Volrath turns into a copy of something else, it will also still have that ability, since Volrath's copy effect is applied in Layer 1 but ability adding/removing effects are applied in Layer 6.

Rhadamanthus on Volrath Shapestealer and Enduring Glimmers

Timestamp matters for effects that apply in the same layer but these effects apply in different layers.

To elaborate a bit on my first explanation: Volrath will just be Volrath when it returns to the battlefield, but the effect from Enduring Vitality's ability that brought it back makes it a non-creature enchantment. This type-changing effect applies in Layer 4. If you activate Volrath's second ability to turn it into a copy of something, that copy effect will apply in Layer 1. However, the type-changing effect mentioned earlier still exists and will still be applied in Layer 4, ultimately making it a non-creature. If you were able to use some other effect to turn it into a creature, then it would be a 7/5 copy of whatever it was, since that's the P/T established by Volrath's copy effect.

FormOverFunction on Deviations

I generally pick my commander last. My “Kaervek, The Enchantress” deck is the most recent example; I wanted to make an all-non-aura-enchantment deck in black and red, and finally settled on Kaervek (with Scorpion God as a close second). There’s so much room to work in the 99, I feel like that’s a much better place to flesh out an idea rather than having the commander be THE idea and the remaining 99 just riding shotgun.

Consult the Spirits

Instant

You lose 1 life and Scry 1. If you cast ~ from the graveyard, instead, you may return a creature card from your graveyard to your hand. If you cast this spell from exile, you may put a creature from your hand, graveyard or from exile onto the battlefield with a Finality Counter on it.

Flashback:

You may cast ~ from exile by sacrificing a creature and paying

"One finger to ask, a hand to beckon, then a body to inhabit."

Create a card that supports two Tribes, but from different angles!

legendofa on Deviations

I have a few of those, I cycle them every so often on here. Best examples are probably:

Muldrotha, the Gravetide gives Elves help with recursion when I inevitably overextend, instead of leading a more traditionally graveyard-focused deck.

Enchantments (not Auras) that literally doesn't have a dedicated commander, just a placeholder until something good shows up.

I was kind of surprised that Temur Goad is so underdeveloped. There's only four decks with those two hubs on here in any format. Xyris, the Writhing Storm's the commander there.

If I think I can find a way to make something work in unusual colors or strategies, I'm probably going to try. It fails a lot more than it succeeds, but the fun is in the attempt. I tend to build decks and fit the commander to the deck instead of choosing a legendary creature and building around that, so a lot of the time the commander's simply the best available option.

Coward_Token on Mark Rosewater Considers the Fetchlands …

Similarly to FormOverFunction, I feel fetchlands are just one mana fixing mistake among many.

For EDH in particular, I think it's kinda perverse that they and their ilk make it so that for commmander cards, it's pretty much always a good thing to have more colors rather than less, because it gives a wider access to a goodstuff card pool in the 99 with little drawback.

Runebound War Elk Artifact - Vehicle Mount

Saddle 1

Crew 2

You may only activate Runebound War Elk's Crew ability or Saddle ability each turn, not both.

When Runebound War Elk becomes Crewed, it gains haste and "Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, you may exile the top card of your library. You may play it this turn." until end of turn.

When Runebound War Elk becomes Saddled, it becomes a creature until end of turn and gains Vigilance and "When this creature becomes saddled, put a +1/+1 counter on each creature that saddled it." until end of turn.

4/4

Design a card that has different effects depending on whether it was cast from your hand, graveyard, exile, or library. You don’t need to cover every zone — just at least two distinct ones with meaningful mechanical differences.

Tidefire Ravager

Creature - Elemental Shaman

When Tidefire Ravager enters the battlefield, for each blue mana spent to cast it, scry 1. For each red mana spent to cast it, it deals 1 damage to any target.

Make a Vehicle that is also a Mount. The Saddle ability also makes it a Creature until end of turn. Have it get a different ability depending on if it was Crewed or Saddled. It can only be crewed or saddled each turn, not both.

legendofa on Pauper Dragons

Yeah, Sword Coast Serpent is really good for that. If it's working, keep it.

I learned not to rely too much on the Orbs. They're a strong supplement, but the deck doesn't shut down if they go away. More like an extra bonus than a key part of the deck. I might end up cutting them down further or sideboarding them, but so far they've been okay.

ChaseyK on Pauper Dragons

legendofa, I like Sword Coast Serpent a lot as both a tempo option and as a way to break through stalled boards (I play against a lot of White Weenie.) Dirgur Island Dragon has been less useful, but I do appreciate its flexibility. I could see swapping it with either more Fang Dragon or Avenging Hunter.

I'm not sure I'd want to cut blue completely (I find the counterspells quite useful, and cards like Sagu Wildling and Patron of the Arts make it really easy to get that blue mana), but looking over your list, I think you probably have better consistency. Though I have not had much success when I tried the orbs and globes you're using. They're just a bit too slow and there's enough artifact hate in the format that I don't often see their value.

legendofa on Pauper Dragons

How are the blue dragons working for you? In testing my Pauper Dragons deck, it felt like they didn't help me that much, and I ended up cutting blue completely. Good creatures, lackluster tempo Adventures. But the Masked Vandal is a great inclusion; I'm going to have to add that into mine.

Balaam__ on No

@PrincessOfFriendship I was going to dismiss the idea because I happened to look at the Nemesis printing first and it doesn’t mention anything about “can’t”, but a quick cross reference shows the other printings do indeed use the forbidden word in parentheticals when defining the Flying ability.

I’ll maybeboard it so I remember it exists, but for now I’m leaning toward it being just a touch too costly to cast to really be able to take advantage of the ‘skip combat’ benefit. I do appreciate the input, as always!

DJST0RM on Hiding cards from analytics

It would be very useful if there were a way (perhaps some tag that could be put after cards in the deckbuilder) that could hide a card from the color pie and CMC curve calculations.

This is useful because I want the color pie to act as a tool so I can see if my mana base matches well, but cards I will never play for mana (eg. Gitaxian Probe or Street Wraith) pollute the data (and similarly for CMC curve).

Not sure how hard this would be to add, but it would be lovely to see something like this.

DryadArborGoesInCreaturePile on Pauper Splice Tide

Adversarial, this list is a meta deck. While I can admit I should be running a playset of Snap for graveyard hate matchups you can still churn through your entire deck until you find your combo pieces for a win on turn 3-4, then you can Deep Analysis your opponent to deck them. Playtest it yourself if you don't believe me. Merchant Scroll also tutors for Dizzy Spell which tutors for Stream of Thought. And the copies of Psychic Puppetry splice onto almost every draw spell, meaning your netting like 3 mana every time you cast an Ideas Unbound to keep digging on your big combo turn. Though when you can put your entire deck in your hand it doesn't really matter.
