What ledgendaries excited you the most?

Commander (EDH) forum

So, there's a lot of brewers on this site but in curious. Which commander made you excited to brew? One of the most exciting things; at least for me is pushing new and sometimes under valued legends to their limit. However, due to how big this game is getting I've felt that commanders are figured out more quickly than back when I started. K'rrik was definitely one that excited me but I found the community list from the cedh discord had already figured it out some time before me :( it was a tad disheartening.

Oh, yeah I was on one of those K'rrik discord xD, I am a personal fan of Aminatou, and was the tezzeret line maker for that cedh build, though sadly K'rrik doomsday and Aminatou Stax aren't top tier. I have hopes for both in cedh xD.

Otherwise, GW Selvala stax/combo is always fun, newer Sisay and Arcum lists are being made, after the engine ban I've seen so many newer lists and such little interest in them you could try to solve them! I was running the Bow line and tuning it for cedh out of mox amber being released but otherwise hadn't seen too many people after engine ban, so give it a try!

There is First Sliver Food Chain variants that are trying to fit more consult lines recently, so you can go ahead and play around with those, and they are showing results from some rounds of cedh pods me and my friends have put together, while there are players trying to jankier decks every day!

Circu consult iso-rev can be a powerful contender in jankier decks, so you can consider that too, with powerful interaction, combos, and tutors, with generally a lot of artifact ramp.

Uro I still feel could be figured out for cedh, but I haven't seen many people looking at it, consider it's Food Chain potential maybe, if you want a nice challenge!

Yidris has been by far my favorite to brew. It started off with cascade is cool and here's big dumb stuff and then slowly involved into combo/ good stuff. It has been a lot f fun trying out different things with it. I used Throes of Chaos for a bit just because of cascade retrace as the "only" words tickled me.

Also had a lot of fun brewing Locust god. When it was previewed i saw someone comment about skullclamp and ashnod's altar and went from there. The wincon of the deck is the basic locust god win, but the rest of the deck was really whatever i felt like. (I started out by typing draw a card in gatherer and took whatever i liked from there for the first pass of the deck)

These are the two decks that i always look forward to preview season for because i love to keep updating them.

Grismold, the Dreadsower

Something about him just got my brew sense tingling. He was given almost no love originally when he debuted but has slowly been rising in number of decks.

Happy to say that without anything to guide me I was able to build a really fun deck with him that my playgroup had no idea how handle, nor what to expect. In a good way of course.

SynergyBuild you bastards! Just kidding. I liked brewing K'rrik because of that phyrexian aesthetic. Aminatou seems strong but Zur just poops on it consistency wise.

I've looked at a few of those lists; I actually built sisay pre paradox ban to get my girlfriend more into cedh and well by the time she tried to sit down and learn the lines it was banned; converted it into twiddle storm but it doesnt feel nearly as consistent or powerful. Arcum was fun. I had him built but urza just out classes him in every way so I transitioned to that. I've seen one with a bow line, 7 mana nissa, and saffi and it just looked underwhelming. Maybe if some more cards come out that tip the scales a bit I'd re look into those commanders but for the time being I feel their current iterations cannot be optimized enough to keep up with flash builds/partners/ or urza.

I do like me some food chain; I use to play it in maelstrom wanderer and it was a blast. Haven't tried any competive lists for it but have some brewed; just too lazy to put any together.

I've brewed up a uro but haven't put it together or tested it. It feels like one of those "why don't I just play x instead". It's powerful but there are better food chain options thanks to the power creep that happened in modern horizons.

definitely cool to see an interest in a golgari commander that's not the frog or meren (I like these commanders, I just see them too much). I definitely think an Illness in the Ranks with some Hardened Scales could get out of hand real quick. Oh and throw in some aristocrats for good measure.

I hate chaos decks with a burning passion. However, I am a fan of controlled chaos that wins/locks out the game.

I felt the over all power level of the nameless gods landed itself to more innovative building. I've played against the locus god a few times; its definitely a commander that's gotten some spicey new toys in the last few sets.

March 28, 2020 8:52 p.m.

Yeah. Especially the fact that Eldraine gave the deck Sage of the Falls that lets locust god loot through the entire deck.

As a blue mage at heart I really enjoyed the process of brewing up Urza and Emry lists in the last year. In general, legendaries that DO things excite me. Boring static abilities or scary big dudes were never really my thing, I just want to tap things to untap things to tap more things so I can tap this other thing. If a legendary has an ability that allows me to tap something for an effect it's right up my alley.

RNR_Gaming Okay, time to go over some of my other ideas I haven't fully fleshed out!

Oros, the Avenger Super weird commander that I think has some pretty powerful text. Obviously not super cEDH, but with something like a Basilisk Collar, it feel really busted, go for a (generally) one-sided sweeper, gain 3 life for each one killed xD. Not the most powerful, but really cool card I haven't even seen played in any game of Magic.

Tymna the Weaver/Sidar Kondo of Jamuraa These two have some amount of powerful synergy I think matters a lot. Using a clearly creature based strategy that should be able to get your 3 tymna draws each turn can be used for casual or competitive, and I think you could go for hatebears or not, since any dork and your commanders just gives you so much draw power. After that you could be running anything xD

pheldagrif I think a deck based around this and Intruder Alarm would be really spicy, I don't know if possible, but using that, with an effect like Bloom Tender is infinite mana, tossing in a Suture Priest is a GG, also, bant means you can use effects like Flash Hulk, or if you give infinite creatures out, Reins of Power can win too, swinging for an infinite win. I don't know how to use the rest of the deck though, cool concept imo!

Zacama, Primal Calamity is a sweet combo enabler, using Temur Sabertooth you can go infinite pretty easily, and with the Dockside Extortionist combo in the format too, I don't see why that deck wouldn't still have good backups, especially with Sanctum of Eternity comboing with it too, you could use a mass of creature and land tutors, attempt to have a super controlled combo, but then also have a super high value commander that can crush in stalls, and can stops most other combos when it sticks outside of consult and flash, like Yisan, Kiki lines, etc. all die to it, and so much of staxy hate pieces fall to it too. Just keep your eyes open for cursed totem and I think you'd have a powerful list!

Ill be honest here, but one of my loves is building weird decks around low tier commanders. Like one of my favorite commanders that Im running now is a token/enchantress/control deck using Ertai, the Corrupted. Or another Ive been loving is a boardwipe and kill spell heavy Mathas, Fiend Seeker.

The second I first learned about both cards, I was like "I gotta build this deck" cause the cards felt so out there and weird.

Feldon of the Third Path is my favorite legend. A close second is Wrexial, the Risen Deep

Tomahawk-Bang says... #13

Thelon of Havenwood is my most loved commander. With his abilities he takes fungus tribal away from the usual token heavy strategies and instead moves the deck into a whole new direction.

Emmara, Soul of the Accord was super awesome to brew.

Aminatou, the Fateshifter can just do so many things, it gives you so many options. It's super cool.

Marchesa, the Black Rose is so up for interpretation that I think it's a super interesting legend.

Gerrard, Weatherlight Hero heading boardwipe.deck would be cool to brew, play once, and deconstruct immediately, because it would be super cool to see it work, but would just suck for the rest of the table.

jaymc1130 my girlfriend pulled an extended foil emry I've highly considered brewing an eggs build; tactile commanders are a lot of fun to play but I always find myself in inpatient pods so excuting the combo lines quickly becomes paramount to combat discontentment.

dbpunk I've played against a curse version of the vampire that basically made 1 player the target; it was decently engaging to play against. I have yet to play against the sac wizard but assume once it's off the ground it can be very oppressive.

Ghosthunter39 I love the art on feldon and like that he gave red another solid option that's not just aggro or goblins. Wish they'd do something similar with white.

Tomahawk-Bang - I feel he lends himself more to the go wide strategies available to saporlings; curios as to what path you took in your build.

ZendikariWol - definitely some cool options. I would go eggs if I built Gerrard. Granted it's still make the table miserable but would probably be more fun to play.

I'm not sure about cEDH, but I love Syr Faren, the Hengehammer because of the surprising amount of damage he can deal out of nowhere.

I also love playing Jazal Goldmane, as you can deal upwards of 40 damage in one swing if no one has any interaction on turn 5. It makes me feel like I can play aggro in Commander, which is fun(for me)

RNR_Gaming: Feldon represents the unused passion that is red, love. If you haven't looked into his lore, I'd suggest doing so.

Ghosthunter39 I haven't yet but heard his wife was killed during the brothers war and he's been trying to recreate her as a machine or something to that effect. I'll look into later if I'm not feeling too lazy.

whatqwerty not cedh material but definitely a fun build around. Feels pretty cool in two headed giant to buff your partners creatures with him. I have yet to come across any cat aggro decks in my meta but I'd be cool to see that archetype beat some face.

RNR_Gaming, Ghosthunter39, I LOVE Feldon! If you want a similarly interesting/fun commander in white, Teshar, Ancestor's Apostle seems ripe for the janking, and Evra, Halcyon Witness seems... like he would draw hate.

Lol evra is a glass cannon but I can see it being super fun to win with Silence effects and beating face with a huge avatar

ZendikariWol says... #21

Honesty? High key wanna just use Evra as a blocker and Reverse the Sands myself every turn.

RNR_Gaming Its a bit more darker than that. She was tortured by Ashnod(Someone who really needs a card). She escapes... blah blah blah she dies. He gets sad and tries all the different types of magic(blue, black, green, white)to bring her back.

March 29, 2020 9:13 p.m.

My favourites among my collection are:

Ayara, First of Lochthwain Mono-black aristocrat build, a lot of mono black builds share a large number of cards, but with Ayara the variance comes from shear depth of awesome and powerful cards that could work wit her. I keep a running side board of stuff with the deck and find myself continuously tuning and trying new pieces.

The Locust God not a cheap deck to build but I love the way it plays, it can be a slow control deck that goes deep and buries opposition with card advantage. It also can pull off turn five wins that leave the other three players stunned.

Edric, Spymaster of Trest My most competitive deck, I built an elf ball version that has become my “last game of the night deck”. The reason I don’t play it until the end of the night is because nobody likes you after you take a 15 minute turn 5 and then inform them the game is over. Maybe not the most fun to play against but an excellent tool to have after a losing streak.

Oh god I forgot about Locust God and how I designed a deck based on it the second it was spoiled. That deck is insane.

Also reminds me of how fun Arjun, the Shifting Flame is.
