THE REBIRTH —May 20, 2018

I have begun to update this deck once more! While I no longer own it in paper (most of the pieces got folded into my Hymn of Darkness: Elenda EDH [PRIMER] deck), it was a very very fun list while it lasted and I want to make it available to the community, while also keeping it up to date.

So, TLDR, I am now going to keep this list up to date, although it is the only deck on my profile I do not own in paper, while still not being marked as "Retired". Anybody got any thoughts from new sets that I missed?

@ Daedalus19876 : You are welcome. Yes, I see how Tombstone Stairwell fits your deck. As you wrote, with Eldrazi Monument, it is very powerful. And you run Consume the Meek to get rid of opponent's tokens.

Oh I really love this deck :)

One last thing, if I may because I am really interested in why you have , and have not, considered certain cards, such as Languish. Additional creature destruction (particularly one that gives -4/-4) weakens your opponents while it strenghtens you. Why have you decided not to run it?

GobboE: To be honest, I've been trying to avoid -X/-X board wipes because they bypass the indestructibility on my commander and granted by Eldrazi Monument. They also fail to kill large creatures, which is a big deal when one of the most scary decks in my meta is an Ezuri deck. Accordingly, the only -X/-X board wipes in the deck are Toxic Deluge (just too good to avoid, and I can "tune" it to miss my commander many times), Decree of Pain's cycling (I have the option to use the full-strength version instead), and Yahenni's Expertise (great value and too much flavor to exclude).

I hope that answers your question about why Languish (and Mutilate) aren't in the deck! :)

Congratulations on a hundred upvotes! I really love what you've done with this deck. I hadn't even heard of Tombstone Stairwell before now, but I'm amazed at how cleanly it fits with the deck's strategy. I would offer a suggestion, but this deck looks pretty much perfect.

needs more token generators

ThinkJank: Thank you for your comment anyway! :) And yes, Tombstone Stairwell is one of the forgotten gems of magic. I just wish it didn't have that pesky cumulatively upkeep cost...

feyn_do_alduin: As far as I know, I'm already playing all the decent ones in black (minus Bitterblossom, because I don't own a copy). Are there any I'm missing? Black isn't known for its tokens.

feyn_do_alduin says... #7

in black, you have all the great ones. but have you considered; Soul Foundry, Pentavus, or Myr Battlesphere?

Soul Foundry seems like it has a place in the deck because it can combo with almost all of your creature spells

feyn_do_alduin: I'll pass on Pentavus and Myr Battlesphere (way too much mana investment for their effect) but I might be able to find a slot for Soul Foundry...Thanks!

Please help me: Walking Ballista can shoot its +1/+1 counter. Mikaeus, the Unhallowed can bring it back with aditional +1/+1 - but these aren't counters, the ballista can't shoot. Am I right?

The only thing the Walking Ballista can be for you is a reusable sac out for Yahenni, Undying Partisan

I like what you have done with Yahenni, I tried to build her too but ended up doing nothing in a multiplayer game. Have a look if you want to.

  1. Remove all counters from Walking Ballista to unload on some poor sap. Ballista remains as a 1/1 thanks to Mikaeus, the Unhallowed.

  2. Sacrifice your 1/1 ballista to Yahenni, Undying Partisan. It will return to the battlefield via mikaeus with a +1/+1 counter on it.

  3. Remove that counter to ping what have you. Ballista is back to being a 1/1 with no counters.

  4. Sacrifice ballista to yahenni... rinse and repeat until you have pinged everthing and everyone into oblivion.

Got it, forgot the undying. Thank you.

No problem,

You have no idea how many times someone has mentioned an awesome combo that I have stared at for longer than I would like to admit before eventually just giving up and asking.

Thats what the community is for!

To help Yahenni grow bigger, I would add Necropolis Regent to double his power every hit. It also pumps thing like Hangarback walker before you sac them for more creatures.

Hipparchos: Thanks! :)

Hades_Shadow: I'll consider it! Just not sure what to cut...

also Triskelion

Daedalus19876 says... #18

maxeh34: I think I'll pass for now. I don't have the slots, and neither is good without the other. HOWEVER, the equivalent combo Dark Depths+Thespian's Stage is going into my Omnath deck to be fetched with Tempt with Discovery ;)

And in my case, Walking Ballista is a strict upgrade over Triskelion.

what reanimation spells do you use and what tutors are there

maybe run Liliana, Heretical Healer  Flip for returning sacs and creatures you kill

Daedalus19876 says... #21

maxeh34: I've now updated the deck, so you can see my reanimation and tutors. I'll consider Liliana, Heretical Healer  Flip - while I cut her from my original draft, I think that later additions might make her more powerful than in the earlier incarnations of the deck.

Thanks for your comment! :)

You are missing some of the explosive mana black is famous for, mostly stuff like Nirkana Revenant, Caged Sun, Gauntlet of Power, Cabal Ritual and maybe Doubling Cube if you really wanna go hardcore mana. Good list tho :)

February 16, 2017 9:56 p.m.

Daedalus19876 says... #23

Entrei: Interestingly, I used to include more of those, but I often ended up with too much mana and too few things to do with it, haha. I'll take it into consideration, though! :)

A solid deck. Looks like you could use some more ways of generating extra mana. Maybe Crypt of Agadeem, or Magus of the Coffers, or even Nirkana Revenant could find a home here.

Sorry for the late feedback I have been busy. My white/ black deck has seem some substantial upgrades if you're interested.

I love Yahenni.

I love Monoblack decks.

+1

I read the cards and suggestions, obviously Waste Not would do much unless accompanied with a discard outlet. That being said I would pair it with Liliana, Heretical Healer  Flip.

I really think Hatred is a must (I see it in the Maybeboard).

Nice deck!
