This deck centers around strong synergies and card interaction to control the board and lay down difficult to deal with threats. It's not simply Selesnya Stoneforge.

The key card tying this deck together is probably Rhonas the Indomitable . Rhonas is resilient and brings a lot of power and utility on the board, even when he is not "active" to attack or block. His strong synergies with the 'fight' mechanic and ping effects allow him to control the board. All of the cards this deck packs are strong on their own but consider some of the powerful synergies at play here:

  • Rhonas the Indomitable/Arena - Yes! Arena is legal in Modern. This land included the first 'fight' like mechanic in MTG. It provides a repeatable, instant-speed, uncounterable way to keep creatures off the board for three mana and the cost of a land drop the first turn you play it. Rhonas can attack and be tapped and still be used with Arena (although Arena taps the creature it does not require the creature to be untapped). Arena is not a legendary land so multiples can be played and activated in the same turn on the same creature. All of these dynamics work well with Rhonas and several other creatures in the deck. The downside is that your opponent picks the target creature they control that your creature fights. However, Arena works well to keep your opponent's board clean, in general.

  • Thrun, the Last Troll/Rhonas the Indomitable - Thrun provides another difficult to stop beatstick that also hits that 4 power requirement to turn on Rhonas. These two together make a difficult pair of creatures to contend with and they end games quickly.

  • Arbor Elf/Utopia Sprawl - It's the class green ramp combo. These two provide the mana to drop Rhonas on turn two and give you surplus mana to sink into your Rhonas pumps and Arena activations.

  • Strangleroot Geist/Gemrazer - Gemrazer has to be one of my new favorites. He's just so versatile. Equipping him on a Batterskull germ for example? It feels great but the dirtiest synergy is the way 'mutate' works with 'undying' and 'persist'. When you cast mutate on Strangleroot, if your creature dies, undying triggers and both Strangelroot and Gemrazer come back to the battlefield as separate creatures, each with a +1/+1 counter on them! Plus Gemrazer's ability to get rid of artifacts/enchantments while providing reach and evasion through trample, make him an all-star utility creature.
