February 27, 2016 - My New Modern Deck!

With the banning of Splinter Twin, I needed a new Modern deck to play. Not wanting the UR/x shell I still have go to waste, I turned to an old card I had some success with back in Standard.

This deck pretty much functions like an ordinary Tempo/Control deck, but also features the added threat of Blightsteel Colossus being cheated into play from Shape Anew.

Blade Splicer - 4 power for 3 mana is a good deal. A 3/3 first striker is great at eating up aggro creatures.

Thopter Engineer - Source of an artifact and haste. Ideal Shape Anew artifact source to make Blightsteel Colossus finish the game that turn.

Pia and Kiran Nalaar - Fantastic creature on it's own. Plays the tempo plan while also producing artifacts for Shape Anew.

Restoration Angel - Blinks artifact producers and a damage source that's hard to block.

Snapcaster Mage - This deck is a Tempo/Control shell with a lot of spells worth playing twice.

Blightsteel Colossus - This deck's alternative win condition when tempo beatdown isn't possible. Against most decks, a resolved Shape Anew into Blightsteel is a death sentence.

Shape Anew - Cheats Blightsteel Colossus into play.

Lightning Bolt - Format staple burn spell.

Lightning Helix - Burn with lifegain attached to it. Can't go wrong.

Serum Visions - The best dig spell in the format.

Mana Leak - Countermagic for problems.

Izzet Charm - In my opinion, the best card in Modern. It does everyting you need it to do: Kills creatures, counters spells, or digs for needed cards. Also a discard outlet if Blightsteel Colossus ends up in my hand.

Path to Exile - Removal for creatures that can't be burned away.

Fetchlands & Shock Lands - Modern's Manabase

Celestial Colonnade - Fallback threat. Colonnade beatdowns with burn backup are the largest source of victories.

Desolate Lighthouse - Card quality engine. Discard outlet if Blightsteel Colossus ends up in my hand.

Ghost Quarter - Utility land hate.

Negate - Noncreature hardcounter for spell-heavy decks.

Wear / Tear - Potential 2-for-1 Artifact/Enchantment removal.

Stony Silence - Affinity and Lantern Control hate.

Shatterstorm - Placeholder for second Stony Silence

Crumble to Dust - Urzatron and manland hate.

Supreme Verdict - For decks that flood the board with creatures or produce too many threats for Path to Exile to handle on it's own.

Leyline of Sanctity - For decks that require heavily on targeting players, such as Storm.

Jace, Architect of Thought - Bums attacks and draws cards. His ultimate is another way to cheat Blightsteel Colossus into play.

Batterskull - There are matchups where Shape Anew just isn't possible to work. For those matchups, Batterskull takes Blightsteel Colossus' spot in the deck.

Keranos, God of Storms - Card draw and burn for long, grindy matchups.
