Redcap Melee

Instant

Redcap Melee deals 4 damage to target creature or planeswalker. If a nonred permanent is dealt damage this way, you sacrifice a land.

Not sure if you ever considered it, but land sac seems to go well with the Gruul modern. Redcap Melee goes well with Gruul or mono-red decks (4 damage to a creature OR PW which makes this a bit more powerful that you can take out PW's). This would also help add some more instant/sorcery for Wrenn. This will also aid in Klothys, God of Destiny to get you more mana if you exile a land card...since there is no guarantee there will be lands in anyone else's graveyard unless you draw Pillage. You could throw in Life from the Loam or Ramunap Excavator to get the lands back as well (I have a bit more land destruction theme in my Modern Gruul deck). Additionally, Cleansing Wildfire can aid you in getting lands to your graveyard OR target an opponent's land.

A card I also LOVE because I have had so much success in mono-red with it, Dreadhorde Arcanist which would also work with Redcap Melee to be able to bring those back with Dreadhorde as well.

Determining just how broken a card is depends on how well it can be interacted with. Omanth is very easy to interact with. However I do believe Genesis Ultimatum or Escape to the Wilds should have seen the axe

The other problem is that so many players are playing it just to win.

I think the bigger problem is that it forces a player to interact with it so early which throws off an opponents game plan, that and players don't want to put more removal in their decks.

That's a whole lot of cards that can deal with Omnath decks. So its not so broken that it can't be dealt with. Does it mean you have to add more than 4 removal cards or change colors? You might have to. Does it mean you might have to change some strategy? Possibly.

Mono White has at least 12 solid answer cards for Omnath and you can still play aggro. Blue has counterspells though you might have to pair it with another color. Red has a few options as well, and the only color that is lacking is if you play mono green. With that many cards you really can't say it's so broken it's unbeatable. You have to play around it. You have to anticipate the strategy. These cards can easily be maindecked, and if youre a player that goes 38 creatures and only 22 lands then I'm sorry for you.

But I wholey disagree with the term Broken. Ive often seen Omnath players quit when they lose Cobra and Omnath. I've also seen a lot of them pass the turn and pass several turns. If you cannot answer it, its out of lack of trying, preparedness, or just a bad game which happens. Also, its not Omnath doing broken things. Omnath only produces the mana to do really really good things. IF Wizards bans Escape and Ultimatum players will have to switch to Lithoforming and while it won't kill the deck it will slow it down and I think that's a more fair approach. But yeah... as above, you don't have to limit yourself to just what's being played. Think outside the box.

Nice idea. NoCrash Through,The Royal Scions?Confounding Conundrum would be a good sideboard piece against the ramp decks.Redcap Melee will be a nice side-board piece against mono red decks.Stern Dismissal would be a better option thanUnsummon.

First off really like the deck I've been wanting to see something with giants in standard for a while. I would recommend Banishing Light over Mortify it's not an instant but it hits more stuff and is easier to cast. For the sideboard, I'd probably put in some more board wipes and interventions. 1 cry 2 Deafening Clarion for example. Noxious Grasp is always a good sideboard with how oppressive BGx is currently, and with Heliod, Sun-Crowned white decks might be big as well. Devout Decree isn't bad either as a 2 off. If red decks become a problem Redcap Melee would be a good option, there seem to be some good Gruul decks out there so maybe it will be good.

Thanks for the input! Realm-Cloaked Giant was in at one point over Time Wipe but I swapped for those corner cases of saving my Cavalier of Dawn but I'm not sold on that and am open to going back

As for the sideboard suggestions Fry used to be in over Shock and that's another I'm not sold on, just needs some testing. I haven't played enough with Aether Gust or Devout Decree to judge their worth, but at the moment Disenchant feels very out of place and might get swapped. And I hadn't ever considered Redcap Melee , another I have very little experience with how good it is but it could be worth a try.

Also, for sideboard cards you might consider:

Fry

Aether Gust

Devout Decree

Redcap Melee
