Budget Ifnir cycling and -1/-1 counters

Standard BG (Golgari)

This deck is my first standard deck so I would like some help with deciding how to better interact with the current metagame in standard. I've never played standard before so this is the deck I plan to use for my first games at my LGS and at a board gaming convention. I've only ever played commander so sideboarding is also new to me. Budget is not a huge issue, I just wanted a deck that was different from the main decks so the cards ended up being cheaper.

The purpose of the deck is to get out Archfiend of Ifnir and then start cycling to wipe the opponents board and get a lot of value.

Cycling Theme

There are 15 cycling cards. For one drops: 2 Horror of the Broken Lands. For two drops: 4 Archfiend of Ifnir, 2 Desert of the Glorified, 2 Desert of the Indomitable, 2 Without Weakness. For 3 drops: 3 Haze of Pollen. 3 Key to the City also turn any of my cards into pseudo-cycling cards.

2 Abandoned Sarcophagus let me reuse all of the cycling cards that I tossed early game for very good card advantage.

-1/-1 Counter Theme

Because the Archfiend of Ifnir makes so many -1/-1 counters, part of the deck is to generate a lot of value off of them.

Most notably the Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons will generate deathtouch snakes and the Nest of Scarabs will generate insects. The Obelisk Spider will drain the opponent of life and regenerate my own, as well as be able to make its own -1/-1 counters and block early game. The Channeler Initiate will help ramp as well as generate a snake or 3 scarabs.

How the deck should work

Turn 1: Land and cycle one of the 1 drops

Turn 2: Land and Channeler Initiate, Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons or cycle a 2 drop

Turns 3 and 4: Land and Beneath the Sands, Obelisk Spider, Key to the City, Nest of Scarabs, Driven / Despair, or cycling

With 5 mana: Archfiend of Ifnir and use Key to the City to discard a card, putting -1/-1 counters on their creatures and generating value

Then: Protect with Heroic Intervention, lock them out with Driven / Despair, and swing for the win

Sideboarding thoughts

I figured if I was facing a deck without a lot of creatures then the Archfiend of Ifnir would not generate very much value so I would take them out and put in 4 Ammit Eternal to generate the -1/-1 counters. The cycling would still be useful as I can use the 2 Horror of the Broken Lands as finishers with Key to the City.

Against an aggro deck I would take out the 2 Abandoned Sarcophagus, 2 Horror of the Broken Lands and 1 Razaketh's Rite and put in 1 Obelisk Spider and 4 Vile Manifestation to better protect myself in the early game.

Then I have some graveyard-hate in 2 Scarab Feast.

Some interesting interactions are the Key to the City can allow Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons to get damage in on the opponent and therefore place a -1/-1 counter and a snake.

The 3 Driven / Despair give a lot of card advantage with all of the tokens being made as well as disrupt the opponent by making them discard their hands. They also give value even after being tossed with Key to the City.

Updates Add

I didn't do too well at FNM, I went 0-4 but two rounds were lost do to my misplays.

The 2 Heroic Intervention did not arrive yet so I played with 2 Haze of Pollen instead.

Game 1: I did very well, my Obelisk Spider was a very good blocker preventing him from swinging for damage and my Archfiend of Ifnir successfully wiped the board of his Kitesail Freebooter, Champion of Wits, and other small creatures.

Game 2: His Hostage Taker kept taking my Archfiend of Ifnir so I was unable to clear his board so I lost. I kept blocking 1 power creatures with my Archfiend of Ifnir and Horror of the Broken Lands putting them in range to be killed by Essence Extraction

Game 3: His Hostage Taker again set me back. His Noxious Gearhulk also was able to remove all of my important creatures. He played The Scarab God this game but I was able to kill it with my Archfiend of Ifnir cycling. He didn't play it the next turn so I could have made him discard it with Driven / Despair but I forgot he had it in his hand. He then played it and reanimated his Noxious Gearhulk to clear my board and win.

Game 1: He made a lot of white tokens with his Legion's Landing  Flip, Oketra's Monument, Angel of Invention and Panharmonicon. I held out with my Obelisk Spider until I played the Archfiend of Ifnir and cycled with 2 Obelisk Spider on the board to wipe his board and drain him for 18 life. He scooped.

Game 2: He played Gideon's Intervention naming Archfiend of Ifnir, and used Cast Out to remove my creatures. I didn't sideboard in my enchantment removal so I couldn't do a lot. He overran me and won.

Game 3: I sideboarded in my enchantment removal. He played cards like Fairgrounds Warden and Angel of Sanctions to take my creatures (multiple per card because of Panharmonicon). He played Cloudblazer as well to draw a lot of cards. I managed to get the Archfiend of Ifnir, Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons, and Nest of Scarabs out. I cycled with Key to the City to weaken his board and make 20 tokens, but he had enough flying damage to finish me off.

Game 1: Everything went according to plan, I wiped his servo tokens with Archfiend of Ifnir and swung for the win with him and my tokens.

Game 2: He used 2 Decoction Module, Gonti's Aether Heart, and Whirler Virtuoso to make infinite Thopters and take an extra turn. I misplayed this because I cycled with Archfiend of Ifnir on my turn to clear his board when I could have kept up the mana to cycle on his turn and clear the board. I realized I needed to be more patient.

Game 3: I sideboarded in Ammit Eternal because I thought it would make my deck faster. In hindsight I should have sideboarded in my Appetite for the Unnatural. He used Decoction Module, Fabrication Module, and Animation Module, to buff his Walking Ballista. I continuously blocked his servos with Archfiend of Ifnir putting him in range to be killed by Harnessed Lightning which was a mistake on my part. He pinged me for 12 on my upkeep.

Game 1: He was able to continuously remove my creatures and kill me before I could do anything. He also played Rampaging Ferocidon which completely shut down my strategy.

Game 2: I sideboarded in 4 Vile Manifestation and 1 Obelisk Spider to try to have more early blockers. He was able to use Ahn-Crop Crasher to stop me from blocking with my Obelisk Spider. He also used Soul-Scar Mage to prevent my blockers from doing any damage. He finished me off with Hazoret the Fervent.

Conclusions:

I think there are a lot of ways to remove my creatures that I need to protect against. I either need to have more hexproof or removal to prevent cards that exile my cards under them like Cast Out or Hostage Taker. Without Weakness did not perform very well because these cards were so prevalent. Hopefully Heroic Intervention will perform better once I get them.

Beneath the Sands also did not perform very well. Most of the time on turn 3 I was hoping to get out another blocker rather than ramp. A lot of the time I was cycling it to try to get something that can protect me. Haze of Pollen performed pretty well. It definitely helped get me to the late game and be able to counter their board states. I think I will be putting these in, replacing Beneath the Sands as these cards protect me for a turn which also lets me drop an extra land, therefore also helping me "ramp". They are therefore more versatile than the ramp spell.

For piloting the deck, I need to keep in mind the prevalence of 3 damage removal spells and not block nonchalauntly with my important Archfiend of Ifnir if they have black or red mana up. There are a lot more combat tricks in standard than in EDH. I also need to be more patient with my cycling, cycling on my opponent's turn instead of my own to be the most effective.

The deck was a lot of fun. I definitely think I can improve it and myself to make it perform better.
