Hi there!

A few cards I'd take out for better/stronger alternatives:

Cards that can be put in instead:

  • Giant Killer It is an early tapping creature, that doubles as removal.

  • Law-Rune Enforcer The "weaker" version of Giant Killer, but his tap ability is significantly better.

  • Tithe Taker A somewhat disruptive creature, that gives you an evasive dude on when he dies.

  • Tomik, Distinguished Advokist His abilities don't matter much, but a 2/3 flier for 2 should be enough to make up for it.

  • Gideon Blackblade He's a human on your turn and he's a very strong play on curve. He can be hard to deal with for control decks, keeps you on board after boardwipes and sometimes gets to snipe their best thing with his -6.

  • Lavabrink Adventurer If you can correctly calculate what to avoid (odd or even), I imagine this guy could be quite annoying to play against.

  • Taranika, Akroan Veteran Once you have some small dudes to pump up, this guy starts to hit for a bunch.

  • Reverent Hoplite If you end up harder on white, this guy could end up putting a bunch of power in play.

  • General Kudro of Drannith This guy does it all in a deck centered around humans. Play all 4.

  • Sunhome Stalwart Will be hard to beat in combat, once you have a couple of Kudro and/or Lockdowns in play. He also beefs up the tokens on attack, which might come in handy.

There is also the possibility of splashing red for cards like Tajic, Legion's Edge, Stormfist Crusader and Judith, the Scourge Diva, but I believe that some combination of the above will definitely make your decks stronger.

Shaving off the top of the curve means you can take out some lands too (around 2-4, depending on how the new list looks).

Good luck brewing.

Another thing with proliferate incrementing over the long game is that you usually don't have that many expensive creatures. One of the problems mentioned was not having anything to do with the mana, but that's because you're playing Nissa which isn't a strict requirement for the rest of the deck to function well; adding in mana sinks is a third-order consideration, which I would say is too much before seeing real matches. The mana from Yang won't come in such a rush; he's a lot better for just laying out more of your small dudes (so you will want more draw) and then dumping the occasional Celebration on them.

Colossal Majesty and Mentor of the Meek might work well; I know the latter has seen a lot of play.

Yang is awesome awesome awesome with vigilance.

Evolution Sage is a beast. The problem is that despite grabbing a bunch of land cards, there's nothing accelerating them coming into play early game; it becomes circular to have Nissa's ultimate be the one doing this. I would add 4x Evolving Wilds for sure and maybe do Ranging Raptors instead of Triumph.

Shalai, Voice of Plenty looks neat.

Promotion is a neat trick but not really necessary when your guys are just large. I know you like Mileva but I would replace it and Pridemate with 4x Sunhome Stalwart .

You'll be surprised how much weight the Apparition will pull on its own; it feels like four proliferators might be overkill. If you don't end up going with instant-speed land-drops, 2x Vivien, Champion of the Wilds would improve the Raptor. Vivien is also hilarious when Oketra is out.

Sidenote I don't think the rules let Celebration trigger Pridemate more than once.

This will not work. Mentor targets, which means you have to target a creature with lesser power at the time the ability goes on the stack. The ability will trigger when the Sunhome Stalwart is declared as an attacker, so you have to choose a creature with lesser power before you gain priority and can activate Anointer of Champions ' ability.

The one exception is if you have multiple combat phases, such as with Aggravated Assault , as you could buff on the first combat phase and then have mentor in the second.

Unfortunately this won't work. The last chance you have to buff a mentor creature is the beginning of combat step.

What happens is that you must attack with Sunhome Stalwart before you can target it with Anointer of Champions (because before that, Stalwart isn't an "attacking creature"). This triggers mentor, which goes on the stack before you have a chance to tap Anointer. The target for the mentor trigger must be chosen when it's put on the stack (still before you've been able to tap Anointer), and the game won't let you target Bishop's Soldier or similarly-sized creatures because they don't meet the requirement of "lesser power."

So by the time you can actually tap Anointer of Champions to make the Sunhome Stalwart bigger, you've already chosen a target for mentor, and it's not going to be a 2/2.

With Anointer of Champions , can I buff a mentor creature, such as Sunhome Stalwart , so that it can mentor a same-sized creature, say, Bishop's Soldier ? Or is it too late?

heybucket88, I actually did have Militia Bugler in an early iteration of the deck with stuff like Cavalry Drillmaster and Sunhome Stalwart. Most of the smaller creatures were swapped out for Lyra Dawnbringer, Shalai, Voice of Plenty, and other angels. Since Mentor of the Meek is most often triggering off of Legion's Landing  Flip and History of Benalia in my deck, Bugler doesn't have much left to find. To be honest though, I'm thinking of dropping the token generators for more Settle the Wreckage, Response / Resurgence, or Conclave Tribunal.

The Fresh-Faced Recruit versus Sunhome Stalwart is more about the flavor behind each card. Check out the flavor of the recruit - it talks about ideals, which is very white-centric, but also emotions, which is a very red thing to do. The stalwart is more focused on using its battle prowess to teach and nurture those weaker - a strictly white thing.

Playing 3 colors on budget is difficult just because of the lands. Gruul as a guild will get its cards in the next expansion, so I would hold off on that for now at least. That leaves you with Izzet or Boros. You could do Izzet with burn, some counters, and finishers like Enigma Drake and Crackling Drake. For Boros, you can put together an aggressive mentor-based deck for cheap. Cards like Boros Challenger, Goblin Banneret, Sunhome Stalwart, etc. are all cents and form the core of the deck. Both of these decks see competitive play once they're fully pimped out too, but you can make due with some budget options. If you're a decent player, you can probably go 50% at FNM once you master the decks.
