Nice deck! Are you looking to update it with any of the Lorwyn Eclipsed cards?

If solo play testing isn't enough and you can't play with other folks IRL, open up another tab and goldfish another deck or two "against" yours. I do that sometimes for strats that are dependent on additional info (Theft decks for example).

Play testing through other decks can also help you see how pacing for different strategies feel, and could give you ideas for your own.

Crow_Umbra tbh every time i playtest the hand seems somewhat decent, ngl playtesting is unfortunately not very helpful to me personally, as bein unable to actually pay mana for cards, and test interaction with an opponent kinda hurts the usefullness, but it is a bit helpful

Crow_Umbra i see, tbh stuff like ghalta and skullspore and great henge are pretty easy otherwise its somewhat difficult

Not yet, since Zopandrel's P/T doubling increases the damage from Ziatora's sacrifice. Keep testing it out.

Ultimately, I'd say keep solo play testing the deck a lot. How consistently are you able to cast the cards above 5 mana? Once you're able to, do they feel impactful with what you already have on your board? These are all questions that play testing repeatedly will help you answer.

I used to have similar concerns about using life to pay for things when I started playing Black, pixelotilz. 's motto is "Greatness at any cost", anything can be a resource.

Personally, I wouldn't worry much about lifegain, especially if Bolas's Citadel is your only means of paying life. I think instead of trying to counterbalance some of these aspects, your deck will be more effective & focused if you lean into what it wants to be doing.

And thank you! It was a fun deck to play. I don't remember what I took it apart for.

Crow_Umbra thats one kickass deck. but anyways, the main reason im worried about life gain is because of the citadel of bolas, i just am kinda worried about draining my own life, but u got a point

No prob! Totally understandable regarding the play opportunities so far. Until you can play the deck again IRL, I'd recommend using the play test feature here to get as many solo reps, mostly to get a feel for deck pacing, & to familiarize yourself with the deck before actual games.

I think your instinct for Izoni and Black Market are pretty spot on. I don't think you need to worry about lifegain as much as you might.

Here's my Ognis deck. I haven't played it in a couple of years, so its definitely outdated. Although Ziatora and Ognis both use Treasure, Ognis cares more about using Haste to keep aggro pressure to generate Treasure to then dump to big X Spells, whereas Ziatora has more of the sacrifice focus.

Crow_Umbra i mean tbh i know what cards i shouldnt cut, namely pitiless plunderer, phytotitan, ashnods altar, reassembling skeleton and some others

Crow_Umbrai mean a bunch of cards like archfiend of depravity citadel of bolas or jeskas will i just dont ever get the opprotunity to draw, but izoni for one has been lacking a bit, the main reason she has stayed so long is bc of the life gain

Generally speaking, whenever I'm looking for cuts, I tend to first examine:

  • Cards at the higher end of my mana curve, basically anything 5+. I know some of your more costly stuff like Spore Nexus or Ghalta have conditionary cost reductions.

  • When looking at higher end cards on my curve, I also ask myself: How reliably can I get the mana for this with the ramp I have? How impactful is this card? How consistent is its effect?

  • Throughout the mana curve I also generally look for cards that might be inconsistent in doing what they're supposed to. How many hoops do you have to jump through, and is the payoff worth it?

Sorry that isn't more specific. Are there cards that have felt underwhelming so far in your play testing?

Doombeard1984 on The First Sliver: Tribal Cascade …

Hi there,

Hate to tell you, but this statment:

"4) You may pay the additional mana costs for spells that have actions like Overload, Kicker, or Replicate when cascading as each spell resolves."

Is not correct. Cascade allows you to specifically cast a spell without paying its mana cost. You are unable to apply more than one "alternative mana cost" which both Overload and Cascade effect are.

You then have additional spell costs such as kicker/replicate which you can pay, as this is an additional cost to the spell, not an alternative cost. However bare in mind, if you cascade into an X cost, this would be X=0, and therefore no replicate.

Sorry to be a rules lawyer

+1 though as love a sliver deck (and have one of my own)

Just a couple of meta and personal choices. You have the high-end counterspells and tutors already. I personally would go with Excise the Imperfect over Oblation, and Tale's End and Disallow will either completely shut down someone's strategy or be useless.

Optimator, very much so. I have a Ulamog, the Defiler deck. Since that entire deck is focused on mana ramp and mana combos, he constantly comes out around turn four. LOL

I have a Vilis, Broker of Blood deck so I understand the trepidation for high cmc generals. Vilis provides so much that it's a fun minigame to sprint toward him. I would imagine Virtue is similar

theNeroTurtle on Competitive Shadow Tribal [Primer]

Optimator, thanks for the comment. My primary "Meh..." about the deck is the CMC of Carl, the Emotional Support Doll. I am not at all a fan of high CMC commanders when the deck is built around them. The other commanders that I do have that are high, I can cheat in quickly in other ways. This one does have regular ramp, but not cheat-in effects. Other than that, shadow is my favorite. My mono black shadow build is super aggressive in 1v1.

Super fun.

Anyway, any suggestions toward the tutor and control would be great. I think those two could be way tighter.

Welcome to the club, pixelotilz!

First suggestion here is to add more low-mana ramp. Mana dorks like Ignoble Hierarch, Elves of Deep Shadow, and Birds of Paradisefoil can give you more options in the early turns, and you can find ways to use them once your mana base gets more established.

Most of your high-cost cards have cost reduction based on power, which is good. There's a lot of 2-3 power utility creatures in the 3-5 mana slots here. That's not necessarily bad by itself, but some of them can probably be switched out for more creatures with 4+ power for better discounts. Depending on how risky you want to be (the mention of little life gain suggests this should be a lower-risk deck), some of my thoughts are: Abyssal Persecutor is a big beater that wants to be sacrificed, Hulking Raptor offers another mana option, and Rakdos, Lord of Riots gives you more access to your top-end creatures.

Crow_Umbra on sacrificial flames

Hi there, and welcome to Tapped Out. Do you have a budget per card, or for the deck in general? In taking a quick look at your list a few things stood out to me:

  • Although your deck has a Treasure focus, you do have a pretty hefty top end to your mana curve, and not as much 1-3 mana ramp for early game.

  • I think editing down your spell slots at 5+ mana and swapping them for more early game ramp like: Ignoble Hierarch, Farseek, Fyndhorn Elves, and Nature's Lore could help smooth things out.

It's been a year or two since I took it apart, but I used to play Ognis, the Dragon's Lash, which has some strat overlaps with Ziatora. If you'd like, I an link you my old deck if you want to check it out.

pixelotilz on sacrificial flames

btw yall suggestions would be much appreciated, as my main problems with my deck are unreliable mana curve or smth and little life gain

Venum on The Queen's Egg

I feel like Thrumming Hivepool was overhyped because we thought it would bring some more Slivers to the set.

Overall, i think it is an OK card at most. It is great if you have a mana sliver (Gemhide of Manaweft) out and you want to ramp with the tokens, but otherwise, we need more card draw.
Have you thought about Trouble in Pairs, kinda of another Smothering tithe...

What do you think of the reanimate combo : Morophon, the Boundless + Fist of Suns + Yawgmoth's Will ?

Always a pleasure reading you!

Updating the deck to include somee of the new final fantasy cards. Wanted to capture the original build here in case someone doesn't have access to final fantasy cards.

*Original Description Adding this one to a casual group of EDH decks designed around classic NES games (The original Final Fantasy for the NEs). Cards that were selected were chosen for theme sometimes over function to add flavor to the deck while keeping its power level in check with the other decks. Suggestions are welcome. It main focus is to create an arbitrary large amount of mana and dump it into a win condition:

  • Supporting NPCs and Mini Bosses: Grand Architect (Cid), Walking Ballista (Warmech), Jarad Golgari lich lord (Astos), Zara Renegade Recruiter (Pravoca Pirates), Oona Queen of the Fae (as the captured fairy) Deck also contains equipment that represent the treasure you would find during game play.
