Lots of updates have been carried out. Our group is actively trying to get a good Old School EDH foundation ready.

amarthaler Thanks for the upvote and comment!

So the deck does occasionally get to 10+ lands, but not consistently enough by late-game that I feel comfortable running Crash of Rhino Beetles. It is a pretty sweet card though, so I'll definitely keep it in mind for future updates.

Landfall has me thinking similar -- I just don't think the payoffs are worth it, since the brew is focused on ramping early game to turn on domain. By mid-game, I generally have enough lands (7-8) to pursue the deck's different strategies, so I often hold back on ramping to use the mana on other things.

Honestly, I'm not confident the deck can withstand heavy aggro, but that's what sideboarding is for :P there's a large Pauper event this Thursday I'm heading to where I'll have the opportunity to test the current list.

Very nice, original deck list. I appreciate the game match up debriefs to hear how it played out.

Does it ramp well enough for something like Crash of Rhino Beetles to work? Or any landfall creatures? Looking at the faerie match up, my initial thought was this deck needs a way to withstand heavy aggro decks or fend off against burn.

I do think the fog effects in the deck will be nice sideboards.

Hey Smotzy, it's not in the deck twice, I use custom tags and tag cards multiple times if they fit multiple categories. If you sort by "type" you can see there's just 1 in the deck :).

I've been thinking about building Fran and Balthier. Seems fun to have a vehicle deck with . Fran Service. Still toying with it, but there's a small but real chance I build it in paper.

Hey there fellow wurm lover, noticed you have Bookwurm listed twice; once under #Draw and then again under #Life Gain. Not sure if you were aware but this should free up a card slot.

I recently added Winds of Change as a weather related card in a deck, I figure the 'winds of change' are inevitably going to be a disaster to someone! I wasn't sure if it would make the cut here, but felt I could share and let you decide!

If you're still looking at White disaster cards, maybe Storm Herd? It's clearly not good, but it's got Storm in the name? Oh, depending on how you feel about Secret Lair there is Wrath of God with it's alternate name that might fit nicely.

KingGilgamesh: Yeah, I know. For one, I haven't actually physocally put the deck together yet. This was just me brainstorming and fishing for ideas to make it better. (lol) However, point two, yeah, I am just a casual player, and my meta is pretty lenient with some banned cards. I'm not rich enough for competitive play. (lmao) Thanks for the compliment on the rest of the deck, though. Makes me feel pretty good about the build so far.

Seems like a commander deck. If you click "Edit" you can change the deck type to "Commander/EDH". This will allow you to mark the commander for the deck with the tag "CMDR" typed after the name in your deck list. (Example : 1x Greven Il Vec CMDR)

Hey, InvalidUsernamePleaseTryAgain

Well, this deck runs really efficient in low and mid strength pods. If Sythis, Harvest's Hand is left unattended for about two rounds, you can often get about 5 auras on her, which also means five cards drawn. If you can additionally protect her from dying like once or twice with the protection cantrips, you should be in for a very good round and get through a whole lot of your library.

Often, in my experience, players are not so concerned with Sythis on the board when I explain to them that it is a straight forward budget voltron deck with no sudden powerspikes or wincons (there are no hexproof auras, and no Ancestral Mask -like auras either). I will use this as an advantage, and people will often snooze of dealing with Sythis.

Sythis should probably be hitting for about 10 flying vigilance damage at about turn 7, if I were to guess. That means possibly eliminating a player at about round 8. Open the Vaults is just a backup wincon plan, the main idea here is just simply: Play Sythis, spam auras, hit hard with flying / trample + vigilance (for blocking purposes), and use surprise hexproof cantrips to void removal.

There is no standard ramp, just: land auras, land untap effects, and fetch land / produce mana on hit a player trigger. You dont really need a lot of lands, with like 5 mana you can often play 5 auras, draw 5 cards, and gain 5 life on a turn. Pretty decent if you ask me.

This is a pretty pure voltron deck, running close to no other creatures than Sythis. Jukai Naturalist and Moon-Blessed Cleric are the exceptions due to their valuable effects.

As for tokens, theres a separate category for token producing auras. They are there just to deal with black and Diabolic Edict effects (which are really good vs pure voltron decks)

It's a bit pricey, but Exquisite Blood is generically very good with burn effects. If you don't mind a combo potentially showing up you can also use Sanguine Bond, which also happens to love your Commander's Lifelink (and fwiw unlike most decks that just throw that in you are VERY able to burn people to actually win on the spot).

I think if you want to use Manabarbs maybe you should look at more Artifact type ramp that won't trigger it? There are some easy ones like Rakdos Signet, Talisman of Indulgence that can even give you coloured mana, and some like Worn Powerstone and Thran Dynamo that can help keep your Commander on the table. Also, maybe I'm missing a ton of them, but IMHO you should have more artifacts if you want to use a Mox Opal.

Some other random goodies you might like: Maddening Hex (this would be HILARIOUS with some doublers), Chandra's Ignition (if you target something with lifelink remember it's the CREATURE doing the damage, so you can gain a TON of life off of this if the board is fairly full, and it's great with a Deathtouch source like Gift of Doom), Fire Covenant (one of the best burn spells ever), and MAYBE a Rionya, Fire Dancer since you've got all those Sorceries.

YMMV but I love having some small card draw effects in a deck like this, maybe Night's Whisper, Winds of Change, Humble Defector, and/or Phyrexian Arena? I feel like Sign in Blood's BB might be awkward.

It's not exactly 'lightning from your fingers', but Brash Taunter is one of the funniest creatures in Magic, just having the little guy out can make you much harder to attack into, and before your turn if you didn't need to remove/burn something you can use mana you're holding up to pick a fight with the biggest creature on board. It's nutso with all your damage doublers IMHO. One of my favorite interactions in all of Magic is how good Scavenged Brawler is with Taunter, it's the kind of thing you won't pull off often, but if people aren't running enough Swords to Plowshares family effects it's amazing.

Elgravo on Soul Sisters

Metropolis39 Thanks a lot for your suggestion. As I mentioned in the comment above, before the last update this deck was a Martyr Life mixed with a Soul Sisters. Then, since the support for both archetypes had finally become good enough, I decided to give the deck a single direction, so I could maximize consistency. I first experimented with Martyr Life because I liked the idea of having win conditions that were easy to search with Starfield Shepherd and, well, Ranger-Captain. But even back then it was clear that Ranger-Captain is too slow, since it lets me drop a win condition only on turn 4 in the best case scenario. Basically, that one less mana in Shepherd’s cost really makes a difference, as does the fact that it can also search for Plains, that it flies, and that I can eventually cast it a second time later in the game. Soul Sisters doesn’t need to search 1-drops as much, so as you can see I didn’t even need to max out the quantity of Shepherd, and against board wipes there’s Spider-Man. Then, you’re right to say that Ranger-Captain is great against combo, and it actually wouldn’t be a bad side option. But in the main I can assure you it’s too slow
