Lightning Bolt

Instant

Lightning Bolt deals 3 damage to any target (creature, player, planeswalker or battle).

I like this beat down version of Zada a lot. Unfortunately Soul's Fire and Gravitic Punch dont work how you probably want it to work. Since it will target Zada and another creature or player, It doesnt trigger Zada. You could probably fill these spots with some spot removal such as Lightning Bolt or Zoyowa's Justice

Niko9 on Favorite EDH Cards

Oh, and it may seem a little weird but I really love targeted removal in EDH. One of my favorite things in a game is to look around the table, assess threats, and have lots of flexible answers. Cards like

Cast Out

Lightning Bolt

Mutiny

Path to Exile

Swift Reconfiguration

Tragic Slip

Actually, yep, Tragic Slip is definitely my pet removal spell : ) It's always the best card in my hand, it just depends on when it gets used.

I guess part of it is that when I used to play board sweepers it always felt so uninteractive. So many games became, somebody doing a combo, does anyone have Cyclonic Rift? And that's so chance dependent that it feels unfun, to me at least. I like target removal because they always have a target, so I can play enough of them to always have some answer, and then it's on me if I don't save it for the correct threat.

With only 16 lands in your deck, you won’t have the mana to cast Desolation Twin until you’ve drawn around 38 cards… there is no way a game is going that long regardless of format/playstyle.

If I were making changes, I would ditch all of Hedron Blade (too weak, too niche), Slab Hammer (really bad card), Desolation Twin (the game’s never going long enough to cast it), and both Retreat to Hagra and Retreat to Valakut (neither really do anything).

In their place I would add 6 more lands, 4x Lightning Bolt, and 4x Flame Slash

Ionizing Blast

Instant

Ionizing Blast deals damage to any target equal to the amount of damage dealt by other instants and sorceries you've cast this turn.

At first, there was a mild Shock. Then, a Lightning Bolt the likes of which wielded by Keranos himself. And then, Rolling Thunder that engulfed all of Theros.

Make a Planeswalker who can be your commander, who gives you an emblem.

I like what you got here. The only things I can suggest are the following.

1) run four copies of Lightning Bolt. It acts like removal and gives you the ability to hit your opponent’s life total directly. I personally feel Kazuul's Fury  Flip, Mutagenic Growth, Kazandu Mammoth  Flip and Wayward Guide-Beast aren’t needed unless you run three or more copies of each.

2) cards like Ancestral Anger, Audacity, Charge Through and Crash Through allow you to get past walls of creatures with trample and also draw you a card, which can make your deck more consistent.

I think the ideal list for you would be this.

4 Akoum Hellhound, 4 Brushfire Elemental, 3 Lotus Cobra, 3 Atarka’s Command, 4 Lightning Bolt, 3 Temur Battle Rage, 4 Crash Through, 4 Enter the Unknown, 4 Explore, 4 Skyclave Pick-Axe, 23 lands

AxonsReplete what kind if budget are you wanting? Good 1-mana options could include some interaction which you’re sorely lacking - stuff like Lightning Bolt, Flame Slash, Fatal Push. With the various sacrificing going on Stalactite Stalker might be a good option too, just for being a 1-mana creature that gets big

Some thoughts:

  • i’m not convinced that either Experimental Frenzy or Footfall Crater do anything useful for you here.

  • your land count is super-low considering your mana curve and your requirement to hit at least 3 lands - i’d go up to 22-23.

  • it’ll be better just to run a mountain instead of Kazuul's Fury  Flip

  • where’s Lightning Bolt!!

wallisface on burn deck help to refurbish

9-lives well, you know my opinion on the competitiveness of either option already based on my above comments ;)

This new version is at least closer to 60 cards, so that's one bonus going for it. However, none of the cards you've added in are particularly useful for the speed a burn deck is hoping to acquire - if you're going down this direction it might be better trying to turn this into something more midrange.

  • Play with Fire only deals 2 damage, making it unplayable at any level above the absolute most-casual of play. There's zero reason playing it when you're not even playing the full playset of Lightning Bolt

  • Atarka's Command is a decent card, but typically better as a sideboard option as a lot of the time it's not going to give you enough value to warrant its inclusion. It's effectively a slightly better Skullcrack, but considering that card already doesn't make it into current burn lists, i'm not sure how useful it is running 8 copies of this effect. This card is much stronger in builds tending-towards midrange (or straddling between aggro-and-midrange)

  • Yavimaya Iconoclast... I'm really not sure what you're hoping to achieve with this card... it's neither fast nor powerful? Just a vanilla creature??

  • I'm also not sure what the purpose of Black Market Tycoon is... you don't need mana, and this card is actively hurting you while also not helping to kill the opponent.

Personally I think you're previously rendition was better, in that the cards at least slightly-more resembled traditional burn. This version seems slower but for no apparent gain.
