1v1 EDH general

Commander Deck Help forum

I'm looking for a general/decklist to take to a 1v1 edh tournament. Any suggestions? I really hate playing mana symbol u but it is the nature of the beast. I love mana symbol r but it isn't an overwhelming strong color.

Are you looking for a combo general or leaning towards aggro/control? Or even a fun general or is it exclusively competitive?

I'm not an expert on 1v1 generals as I play multiplayer exclusively, but i do know some generals that might work.

Norin the Wary he is pure fun

Krenko, Mob Boss bc goblin swarm is fun.

Purphoros, God of the Forge similar to Krenko, just load up on tokens.

Zo-Zu the Punisher not fun to play against. Load up on MLD and incremental damage cards.

Azami, Lady of Scrolls draw engine and easy to combo out

Thada Adel, Acquisitor while Sol Rings and Mana Crypts are fun to steal, so are swords.

Talrand, Sky Summoner easy on the budget, has control up the wazoo, and has plenty of cantrips to net you cards and flying tokens.

The Gods are fun to play with. Built in indestructibility and doesn't necessarily need to be a creature to be useful.

or

For competitive play Damia, Sage of Stone, Azami, Lady of Scrolls, Scion of the Ur-Dragon, Oona, Queen of the Fae, Narset, Enlightened Master, and Edric, Spymaster of Trest

For casual play Karador, Ghost Chieftain, Nin, the Pain Artist, Oloro Ageless Astetic, Kozilek, the Great Distortion, Marath, Will of the Wild, Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest, and Ezuri, Claw of Progress

If you hate playing blue, but want to have a Commander that works well in 1v1 (which, is this Duel Commander or 1v1 with the multiplayer ban list? There's a difference since Sol Ring is still allowed in the latter, and there are a bunch of shops that do the latter), then you can run:

Karador, Ghost Chieftan, Prossh, Skyraider of Kher, Yisan, the Wanderer Bard, and you don't really have to use a bunch of blue to make Animar, Soul of Elements viable at a competitive environment. Karador wins when the player reaches 7 mana and the opponent doesn't have an exile spell ready (otherwise Boonweaver Giant just comes back out of the graveyard anyway), Prossh and Food Chain BFFs, Yisan scales quite well to 1v1 by using a toolbox approach, and Animar uses Ancestral Statue, Cloudstone Curio, etc., to generate stupid counters and value and win. Each of these, when built properly, can win by turn 4-5 (with a good start) or can hate an opponent out/lock them down by that time.

Those are your option for "top tier" Commanders that don't involve blue, since you say you dislike playing that color.

I'm not sure how competitive you're looking to be with this deck but I've found that werewolves are actually fairly solid in 1v1 style commander. Ruric Thar, the Unbowed, Xenagos, God of Revels, and yes, maybe even Ulrich of the Krallenhorde  Flip could be solid in a more casual style game.

I don't have any personal experience playing 1v1 Commander, but I've been told that Vendilion Clique control or Zur the Enchanter control/prison can be considered the cream of the crop.

That being said, I would like to echo the thoughts of PookandPie and kyuuri117 about Animar, Soul of Elements. You do have to play mana symbol u, but in the form of creatures, which might be more appealing to you. It's a fairly powerful deck that has numerous combo angles. In fact, I think that 1v1 is perhaps even better than multiplayer Animar. A number of the combos result in making Animar, Soul of Elements infinitely large, allowing you to possibly kill one player and then be hated out of the game prior to finishing the rest off. This problem is alleviated in 1v1.

Off topic. Why is Vendilion Clique still 34:00$? It isn't really played in anything, and has been reprinted a lot.

On topic: Meren of Clan Nel Toth is a good stax commander.

Excellent! Thank you for all the feedback. I am looking for a competitive build. I know Commander is a general "fun" format, but when you strip it down to 1v1 it becomes more of the "I want to win" idea. I do have a Prossh, Skyraider of Kher deck that needs some minor touches, so I guess I could start there. But Animar, Soul of Elements sounds about the best. I know it includes mana symbol u, but yes, he can be infiently huge and drop on your face with trample or unblockable or something of that sort destroying the opponent with commander damage. He can also use the mana symbol u creatures and stay away from the control aspect. Which is what I'm truly trying to avoid. Combo is good. So is huge smashity. A Purphorous, God of The Forge deck was actually on my mind for sure. Goblin tribal with the god at the helm. He was my first actual EDH, but lost some flavor in the multiplayer game.
