THIS IS AN ORZHOV DECK ON STERIODS!!! And here's why...

  1. This deck is much faster and consistent

  2. This decks has a variety of win-cons from swinging with beefy creatures, to paying mana so my opponent loses life, to gaining life myself while everyone else loses the same amount

  3. This deck not only can be very aggressive, but extremely defensive as well due to the pillow-fort mechanics, threat removal/crippling, and high-toughness creatures to block with

  4. If either myself or my opponent lose momentum and stall out (which is unlikely because I have so much card draw), or even if I encounter another pillow-fort deck, I can passively gain life, and make my opponent lose life at the same time, in multiple ways

-

NOW LET'S GET DOWN TO THE CARDS!!!

-

First off, the MANA BASE:

2x Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx-For when I need a bump in mana

4x Godless Shrine & 4x Temple of Silence-These give me easy access to any color mana I need.

6x Plains & 8x Swamp-For all those basic-land-lovers out there. You know who you are.

-

CREATURES: (Lowest CMC to highest)

3x Nyx-Fleece Ram-PURE GOLD! He's a cheap blocker, gains me life, and counts as an enchantment.

2x Brain Maggot- Cheap card that lets me see their hand and keep a card exiled (at least for a little while)

3x Underworld Coinsmith -Gains me life, counts as an enchantment, and can let me knock my opponent down little by little if I have extra mana.

1x Athreos, God of Passage -Awesome dude that makes my opponents think twice about killing my guys, plus I'm able to get him to a creature pretty quickly as well. He's also an enchantment...

4x Herald of Torment -Awesome value! A 3/3 flyer for 3 is great, being an enchantment is great, and being able to bestow him to give flying to any creature & having a creature if the first goes down is amazing!!! The 1 life tax each turn turns is a joke with all the life-gain in the deck...

1x Heliod, God of the Sun-A nice body, but his abilities are what make him awesome. Vigilance is good no matter what. The ability to create enchantment creatures to make blockers, be able to swing in, or to pump Ethereal Armor/Sphere of Safety is why Heliod is nothing but good for this deck.

1x Erebos, God of the Dead- A nice counter to any other lifegain decks, but is also awesome because I pay 2 life and 2 mana as many times as I want a turn to draw a TON of cards!!!

2x Doomwake Giant- A fattie to start with, but his constellation ability causes trouble for my opponents late-game when I start pumping out enchantments!

1x Obzedat, Ghost Council- The only non-enchantment spell in this deck. Great devotion, great body, great leeching ability, unkillable with Whip of Erebos, and gives me a creature that's not vulnerable to enchantment hate!

-

ENCHANTMENTS: (Lowest CMC to highest)

4x Ethereal Armor-FANTASTIC boost & first strike to any of my creatures, and only gets bigger the longer the game goes on.

3x Banishing Light-Great removal that happens to be an enchantment as well!

3x Gift of Orzhova -A back-up lifelink source that also gives evasion in the form of flying, plus it's another enchantment...

1x Spear of Heliod- Nice boost for my creatures, good removal that can be used over and over again, and we can't forget that it is also an enchantment that gives nice white devotion for Heliod, God of the Sun or Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx

2x Underworld Connections-A nice way to refill my hand, it's an enchantment, and the life loss is nothing compared to the life I'll be gaining from my other cards!

2x Whip of Erebos-Another source of lifelink, an enchantment, and can also bounce creatures back into play for a turn. Don't miss his combo with Obzedat, Ghost Council (hint: he won't stay dead)...

3x Sphere of Safety-PILLOW FORT FOR THE WIN!!! No, but seriously, I can protect myself while I gain life! Buys me time and only ever gets bigger and bigger...

Updates Add

Hey guys, sorry for the late update, but last Friday's FNM went FANTASTIC!!!

It was 2HG FNM last week, so for those of you who don't know what that is- 2HG is a 2 v. 2 format of magic. Two big differences are that there is 30 life per team and you only play 1 game a round, so you also can't sideboard.

My partner, Chris, was using a mono-red burn/devotion deck, which really helped to protect us early-game.

-

Round #1: Win

We played a team made up of a G/B Ramp & removal deck and a mono blue devotion deck. Early game I had out an Underworld Coinsmith enchanted with a Ethereal Armor and a Gift of Orzhova. They finally removed it with a Hero's Downfall, but Chris dealt the last 5 damage with his Fanatic of Mogis and a Lightning Strike.

-

Round #2: Win

This match was really close! Chris and I were playing a Boros enchantment deck and another B/W Enchantment deck that was similar to mine, but had more than 100 cards. The real hurt came from the Boros deck when he put 4+ enchantments on a Hero of Iroas including Ethereal Armor. Even though I didn't draw into any removal for the hero, I did manage to put out a Herald of Torment enchanted with Ethereal Armor, and Chris got out 2 Awaken the Ancient's and a Fanatic of Mogis. We actually got down to 2 life the turn before we won. We would have actually lost if instead of casting a Dawnbringer Charioteers, the guy with the B/W deck had used Underworld Coinsmith's life-loss ability twice!

-

Round #3: Win

Probably the most fun game of the night. We played a B/G/W discard deck and a G/W enchantment/equipment deck. Chris managed to draw a ton of burn spells that helped with removal of a loleth troll, and I filled my field with Whip of Erebos, Heliod, God of the Sun, Brain Maggot, Nyx-Fleece Ram, a Gift of Orzhova, and an Ethereal Armor. I stalled out after the B/G/W deck put out an Angel of Serenity by whipping it back from the graveyeard with his Whip of Erebos, targeting my heliod, brain maggot, and ram. I cast them all again the next turn but Heliod lost his creature status because I had lost the enchantments when the angel exiled the creatures they were on. However, once again, Chris' burn spells combined with my vigilant creatures did them in and we got the win and 1st place for the night!

-

Alright, I know that was long, but overall we won all 3 rounds and came out splitting 11 packs of JOU between us. I did notice some small problems with my deck:

  1. Sanguine Bond needs to just go in the sideboard because most of the time it's just a dead card.

  2. While Sphere of Safety is an awesome card normally, it is almost useless in 2HG because it only prevents your opponents from attacking you, not your opponent. So next time I play this deck in 2HG, I'll trade out some cards from the sideboard for the sphere's

I can't wait to play this deck at FNM tomorrow!
