How do you win with this deck? I see a dramatic reversal/isocron scepter combo. But why no Blue Suns Zenith?

I also see thst Tandem Lookout. Sweet combo hehe

Yo Durdler, pretty much testing out the waters right now. I been winning by reusing the shuffle effects and pinging people with Nivvie. There are a couple interactions with Iso/Rev combo. I can go Paradox Engine route and get infinite mana that way to cast Nivvie and eventually wheel to do things. Or I can use Iso/Rev combo and win from there and go dual scepter route with Copy Artifact and imprinting Lightning Bolt .

Pssst, it's the reason why I have the champion rewards bolt in there haha. I am open to ideas to make it more smooth. I also have a proxy Timetwister that I am using in place of Day's Undoing .

First i'm impressed by the effort you put on the description of your deck.

From what I understand this deck totally depend on your commander to win, this deck would be a good match again the red Purphoros. Since instead of putting creature to make damage you are casting spell. It is the same mind-set behing it, but your version of it seem slower. But

The amount of counter spell in your deck can be very difficult for your opponent if they don't get strong or fast enought before your commander is in play and I think this factor is very important. The fact that you can slow your opponent before your can play your commander in the same time that you cast spell to get your commander faster could be very power full. Mystic Confluence would be good in there, I think.

One weakness of your deck seem, to came from the casting cost of your commander and the fact that you don't have a lot of cards (beside your lands) that give you color mana. I think that event sol ring or mana drain are optional since that they won't get your commander faster. I recommande Wayfarer's Bauble, this one here can help getting your commander one turn sooner.I also recommande Spell Swindle this one here don't make you draw but it can be a good option the turn before you can cast your commander, plus you can decide when you want to use your mana.

And finally I recommand Lightning Greaves for ultimate protection (totally optional since you got a lot of counter spell), now if you don't have counter spell in your hand or your ennemy is using an creature that have an ability to make damage, it won't affect your commander. The only option for your adversary is to use an wipe the board type of card just to remove your only creature (that can be fun to witness).

Mizzix of the Izmagnus can have a very powerfull synergie with your commander.

Yo philkillpro appreciate your insight.

This deck is built towards cEDH match ups, yes it does mainly require my commander to win because Nivvie himself is a two card combo with any of the Curiosity effects. It is supposed to be slow, we are a control combo deck, we are not rushing to win asap, it's built to out tempo and control the boardstate.

In regards to Mystic Confluence it comes in and out of the deck, the same can be said for Cryptic Command, Dig Through Time, and Treasure Cruise. It all depends on my current meta and how much it interacts with the game. Yes having triple pips on blue and red in the casting cost of the commander is a downside however Nivvie negates it by not being able to be countered as well as netting at least one card draw before anything happens to Niv. I also would like to think that I do have enough sources for mana as I have 10 extra ways of producing color mana aside from my lands. In the part of also for Mana Drain and Sol Ring, they are damn good cards. It's not used for casting Nivvie faster as I mentioned earlier above, it's to out tempo your opponents. Not to mention there are certain tricks you can do like for example using Frantic Search with the excess colorless mana to untap your lands to accelerate into Nivvie faster.

As to Wayfarer's Bauble, Spell Swindle, and Lightning Greaves. The latter is a maybe, you don't want to tap out in a flash hulk meta but it does ramp so I'll take it into consideration. Spell Swindle is too slow and chances are Swindle itself will get countered, free cast spells are your best bet. For the former, our combo itself relies on having enchanted Nivvie with a Curiosity effect, with the low creature count we have, chances are there is no other creatures to equip when we decide to enchant Nivvie making it no bueno to give Nivvie Shroud.

For Mizzix it does no good in this current build and the casting cost is too high. Thanks again for your insight~

Hello,

big fan of this deck & primer. Why Mana Vault when you have only Stranglehold and Treasonous Ogre that have 3 in their mana cost? Also is Mox Opal a bit dead draw if you don't have enough artifacts onboard? Just curious :) Also what do you think about Torpor Orb in this deck now with Thassa's Oracle out there? Thank you for your time!

Sup Nazaxed, glad ya like Nivvie!~

It's funny ya actually ask about those two specific cards as I have just recently added them in about two days ago. I see potential in Mana Vault when bursting out a lot more artifacts or having that Cyclonic Rift mana open on T3-5. I am still half and half on Mox Opal as I am still testing it out, it was dead in one of my hands in one game but the other games I surprisingly had 3 artifacts on the board usually.

In regards to Torpor Orb, I have been thinking a lot of adding it in. It only shuts down two of my cards and highly worth it so it will probably come in when I see a card that I don't like rn. The only issue I have with this current build is the lack of library reshuffle, at max I would have to do 120 to the table and my only way is Winds of Change. I been thinking of adding back in Mission Briefing and Snapcaster Mage as additional ways to recast Winds of Change. The other alternative thoughts that a friend recommend to me is adding in Thassa's Oracle and Jace, Wielder of Mysteries. So not too sure what to do.

Captain Lannery Storm seems like the weak point here. Also, your curve is so ridiculously low that you could likely live without one or two of your lands... Which gives you some more space to include things. The biggest questions I have are why Wheel of Fortune, Windfall, and Izzet Charm aren't in here -- even apart from their synergy with your commander, they let you refill your hand after you empty it with cheap mana rocks.

Yo Daedalus19876, main reason why I don't run the wheels is that currently in my meta refreshing their hands is definitely heavier downside than just to refill mines. In most of my games I had with Nivvie, I already had the card advantage over them, the times I had Wheel of Fortune in hand as well...I never really wanted to cast it as well.

I might add back in Wheel one day, but at the current moment I am satisfied not running it in this current iteration. In regards to Izzet Charm, haven't really thought about it to be honest, I should probably try it out.

I actually really favor Captain Lannery Storm quite a bit, she is a repeatable source of gaining mana. To me her value is quite high as I am in a more stax oriented meta. Thanks for your insight Daed!

Hi!

Awesome Primer! I'm trying to build a Niv Mizzet deck myself. What power level would you consider this deck on a 10 scale? I'm trying to find more of a 7.5/10 - 8/10 power deck to keep it fun as our playgroup is NOT cEDH. Do you have any suggestions on how to keep the deck's strength around that leve? (I.e. optimized and strong but not cEDH level). Thanks again :)

Hey cfost827, I would say this deck is like a 8-8.5/10. Some things to consider though is that does your group allow infinite combos or no? If you do keep infinite combos than you run all the Curiosity combo effects. If your playgroup doesn't, than I would say go for the handcycling version of Nivvie as that is a fun and tuned version of him.

Feel free to ask anything else!

cfost827 says... #15

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, our playgroup isn't really to fond of infinite combos as they are not the most fun haha.

I do love your deck list but I'm looking to bring it's power down to about a 7.5/10 - 8/10. I basically want it to be a straight up fun spell slinger deck that is decently strong and optimized but not oppressive (like most of the the decks in our playgroup/meta).

I know you mentioned cutting the Curiosity and other combo pieces (can you list some of the others to cut?) but do you have any suggestions on cards to cut or change to bring the strength down a bit? Basically to a handcycling or spell slinger version like you stated.

Any suggestions, deck lists, or info to do this would be helpful :)

I just made a post on Reddit regarding the Niv Mizzet, Prater I'm trying to make to give you more of an idea of where my head it at. Link here : https://www.reddit.com/r/EDH/comments/mdeprk/building_niv_mizzet_parun_need_suggestions_primer/

Yo cfost827, just read the reddit post you linked. There is a list somewhere I read long time ago based on the original Niv-Mizzet, that version is the handcycling version and I am really fond of that deck list. Here is the link to it.

If ya have a discord or decklist posted I can help ya give you some pointers in tuning the deck, as I am an advocate in tuning decks towards your meta and not looking things up online.

You also mentioned your budget is roughly $1000, there are some core cards I would recommend such as Mystic Remora , Rhystic Study , Dockside Extortionist , Jeweled Lotus , just to name a few. Nivvie is a super flexible deck so also depending on your meta there are different things ya can do.

Thanks so much for sharing that decklist! Very helpful.

I'm still working on putting a decklist together but I'll be sure to share it with you! I think your deck list and the one you shared are a good starting point for me, so thank you again.

I think the Curiosity/Ophidian Eye/Tandem Lookout combo is actually fine in our playgroup. It's not really an "infinite" combo that we traditionally think of. For instance, I have a Teysa Karlov deck that is Aristocrats where I just sac tokens and dome everyone for 1-2 damage and win the game (I do have 2 legit infinite combos in the deck which I rarely use). So my Teysa Karlov deck is pretty similar to your combo here - in how it wins.

I'll work on the decklist and will definitely share it with you! Thanks

No problem cfost827, yeah it's the reason I run Winds of Change and Valakut Awakening  Flip when I decide to combo out. The other way once you run out of cards is to deal commander damage to the face. If you are running the handcycling route I would recommend adding in one of the eldrazi titans to reshuffle your library if you don't have enough damage. That or Elixir of Immortality , however the titans are a bit more useful.

Also I use moxfield for my more up to date lists as it is a bit more easier to edit the cards for on the spot changes for deck building and such and would recommend to use that for deck building!

Here is the link to my Nivvie Moxfield list.

Thanks for the feedback and providing that link! Very helpful.

I'm going through and basically deciding what cards to cut or include to ensure it's at 7.5/10 strength. I shared your decklist on Reddit and a user mentioned that it looks like it's designed to play in the cEDH meta - which actually won't be as effective in normal EDH (which is what my playgroup plays). However, I still think there are very good cards that I can include and I'm essentially still trying to do the same strategy as you (i.e. spell slinger fun lol). I'll keep you posted but thanks!
