Smoothing Out The Deck —Jan. 27, 2015

OUT
Hellkite Tyrant, Deal Broker, Dross Scorpion, Scarecrone, Sliversmith, Throne of Geth, Everflowing Chalice, 3x Snow-Covered Mountain

IN
Burnished Hart, Silent Arbiter, Solemn Simulacrum, Dreamstone Hedron, Ichor Wellspring, Blasphemous Act, Arid Mesa, Bloodstained Mire, Wooded Foothills, Tomb of the Spirit Dragon

The ramp creatures and card draw artifacts have made it back in to smooth out the deck a bit, as you can dump your hand quickly. The fetchlands have been added to take advantage of Crucible of Worlds and Rings of Brighthearth, and Tomb of the Spirit Dragon is in to offset some of the life loss from the fetches and Ancient Tomb.

Some of you may be surprised with the removal of Hellkite Tyrant. Though he is a strong win condition, the deck has taken on a more combo approach and I usually would have the dragon just sitting in hand. It's still in the maybeboard as I haven't completely ruled it out.

As much as I loved the Dross Scorpion + Pentavus + Throne of Geth combo, the scorpion and the throne were underwhelming compared to the rest of the deck, so they're out for now. The biggest thing I lost taking that out is I can't use the old intro line in the deck description:

"Kickin' back on his Throne of Geth, sipping from his Everflowing Chalice"

This deck is awesome man, Not sure if you've noticed it yet, but when Mycosynth Lattice is on the board, Basalt Monolith + Kurkesh, Onakke Ancient is an infinite mana combo as well.

I don't run Blightsteel Colossus or Feldon of the Third Path in my Daretti build, do you find them to be really helpful?

Feldon of the Third Path could easily be Daretti's second in command, in my ArtiFactual Artificer. Blightsteel Colossus is a good backup wincon, in any deck.

Could you explain to me how Basalt Monolith+Kurkesh, Onakke Ancient+Mycosynth Lattice= Infinite?

  1. Tap Basalt Monolith for
  2. Tap any mana source for an additional
  3. Spend to untap Basalt Monolith, spend (because of Mycosynth Lattice's 3rd ability) to use Kurkesh's doubling ability to copy the untap ability which is on the stack.
  4. After the first untap, in response to the second untap trigger, tap Basalt Monolith to produce an additional

You now have and untapped stuff. Repeat at will for infinite colourless mana.

Thanks for the complement Cjhobbitbane. I've been thinking about putting together a list of infinite combos for the deck description, so I'll definitely add that one to the list. Mycosynth Lattice makes everything stupid, and it's makes me happy :)

Blightsteel Colossus has been amazing, though a little slow as a win condition goes when there's infinite combos you could be working toward. Having said that, I've seen this deck bring him out, with haste, as early as turn 3 which is often early enough to knock at least one player out of the game before it's dealt with.

I've been pondering Feldon of the Third Path's place in the deck lately, since I have a few cards in the sideboards I'd really like to fit into the deck, and I also need better answers against control, which I guess is stax/punishment? Anyway, I think he has a strong place even with the limited selection of creatures. There are at least 10 really good targets for him, which seems like enough to warrant his inclusion for now.

I'll have to stick Feldon of the Third Path back in and playtest it a bit, I actually won a game turn 6 today because of Comet Storm which I wasn't running until I saw your list, so thanks to you sir!

I also realized that if you have an untapped mountain you don't even need Mycosynth Lattice, it's just infinite on it's own so that's my bad.

I run Winter Orb, Slobad, Goblin Tinkerer, Phyrexia's Core and Tangle Wire in my Daretti, if you get the chance I'd love it if you hopped over to my page and took a look at mine and passed on any pointers you might have.

Comet Storm is a reliable win condition in the deck, especially if the blue player tapped out not realizing you're ready to go off. I like the one-of for this effect in the deck so it's an option, but it's not the sole focus. I'm glad it picked up a win for you Cjhobbitbane!

I got most of the cards from my latest update in the deck, except Winter Orb and Price of Glory which I'm still trying to find spots for. Does anyone have any suggestions on cuts? There are so many sweet interactions it's hard to make cuts, so I need some fresh eyes to take a look.

Hey do you think, and I know people hate him, Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded would be helpful. I like him in my Daretti deck. He is a double-edge sword. But I like him.

I've thought about, and other people have suggested, Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded but he doesn't work well with this build. After the first few turns you'll typically have a specific gameplan based on your draws, and the randomness means possibly having to play sub-optimally, which translates to your opponents having more time to disrupt your gameplan. I could see him being fun in a less tuned build though. Thanks for the suggestion Nickosis.

In mine he works fine. Mainly because the randomness doesn't hurt too much and mine doesn't require as much of a consistent board play. I rarely use his ultimate, but his first two abilities are really good for me, for you I see how it isn't great. What about Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker? He gives you a beat stick and gives you card draw, or do you feel like he is like Tibalt in that his ability, for the deck, is too detrimental?

Have you tried Ugin. He seems much stronger than Karn.

Have you considered Mox Opal for ramp?

Enbringer I don't know if Ugin, the Spirit Dragon is stronger than Karn Liberated, but they would both have their uses in this deck. I would like to try him out, but I'm going to wait a little while and see if the price comes down.

Ender666666 Mox Opal is a card I've considered, along with Mox Diamond, but it's going to take some time before I can acquire either of those. Of course, Mana Crypt is on the wishlist as well :)

I have to wonder why Mirrorworks isn't in this deck. it would do wonders.
